Airalo vs Nomad: data, currency and refund differences

Airalo's general unlimited policy states a default 3GB high-speed allowance per twenty-four hours from activation, then 1Mbps, with package-specific exceptions. Nomad sells different unlimited and day-plan arrangements; its own general explanations are not a single numeric rule for every current country package.

If you need an assumed 4GB upload in one day, Airalo's default threshold is exceeded. For Nomad, use the selected Japan package's Plan Details to establish its high-speed amount, reduced speed and reset before choosing it for that upload. If those details don't confirm the requirement, use a fixed total allowance or move the upload to Wi-Fi. Don't borrow a threshold from a different Nomad country or older day-plan page.

The same applies to hotspot: Airalo's general policy permits personal sharing, while the selected Nomad offer must establish its own terms. Neither a phone-data label nor an empty hotspot field proves unlimited laptop suitability.

Nomad's current Japan page states a 60-day activation window, after which the plan automatically activates. It also describes plan-specific add-ons, with their own activation behaviour. Don't buy far ahead and assume the plan can wait indefinitely.

Airalo's activation policy and available top-ups are shown for the selected package. Open My eSIMs → Details for its connection instructions and available options. A saved profile doesn't prove that a new allowance is active.

If either provider's current profile is working and meets the next trip's coverage and data requirements, retaining that setup can be useful. If the phone is locked or the exact regional model doesn't support eSIM, changing between these two won't remove the device restriction.

Nomad publishes a thirty-day purchase window in its plan refund policy. It distinguishes uninstalled/unactivated plans, verified technical problems after use, removed single-use profiles and purchases with discount codes. It also expressly sends DTAC, UK voice and unlimited plans to their own product-specific refund rules. Use those rules rather than a blanket statement that all activated orders have the same remedy.

Under that policy, Nomad won’t refund a purchase made with a discount code after the eSIM is installed or the plan is activated.

Airalo's withdrawal route ends at the earlier of fourteen days from purchase or activation; technical problems have separate conditions. For either provider, keep the profile installed and send the receipt, exact plan, location, error and checks already tried. Report a fault during the trip while it can be investigated.

Nomad's points help gives a useful example: a US$12 purchase earns 50 points, redeemable as US$0.50. That's about 4.17% of that purchase, rather than a flat 5% return on every total. Redemption conditions and expiry still apply. Don't pay more for an allowance you won't use simply to earn future credit.
