If you need a US number for a business to contact you, that may be useful. If a hotel in Japan needs a Japanese number, it doesn't solve the same problem. And it won't receive a bank text addressed to your Australian number.

What the Hushed promotion includes
aloSIM's support pages describe a Hushed bonus with eligible data packages. Redemption happens separately, and calls and texts use the Hushed app over an internet connection. Check that the package you're buying includes the promotion.
The current instructions offer a US or Canadian number and $3 of pay-as-you-go calling/text credit. The promotional number's plan follows the data package's duration, up to 30 days. If you need the number beyond the promotion's duration, get Hushed's extension price before deciding whether the bonus saves you money. For a business that specifically needs to call a US number, that may solve a practical problem. For a hotel asking for a Japanese number, a US number doesn't meet the same requirement. If the business requires a Japanese number specifically, this US/Canadian promotion isn't the right substitute.
Hushed also says its numbers aren't guaranteed to work for third-party verification. Don't buy the promotion expecting it to receive every bank, booking-app or account-registration code. Hushed's verification guidance.
What happens to your Australian number?
A compatible dual-SIM phone can use travel data while retaining your Australian line. A code sent to your Australian number still needs that number's service to receive it. The bank must send the message, and your Australian service must support receiving it on an available overseas network.
Turning data roaming off on the Australian line controls its data setting. It doesn't make calls, voicemail or every other carrier service free. Check your own plan before keeping the line active. Telstra, for example, says incoming SMS alone doesn't trigger its Day Pass, while calls, sent SMS and data can; it also warns about voicemail charges. Telstra's current guidance.
Before departure, ask your bank which approved sign-in or payment-verification method you can use if an overseas SMS doesn't arrive, and set it up while you still have access at home. Ask your carrier whether your service can receive SMS in your destination and which other activity incurs a charge. A Hushed number won't fix an Australian bank code sent to your existing number.
Compare the data for the same trip
For a Japan example, our selected 5GB/30-day plan is A$14.95 and 10GB/30 days is A$19.95, checked on 30 October 2026. Both must start within 60 days of purchase. They are data-only, and their hotspot notes say availability may depend on the network and phone.
Open aloSIM's Japan selector and compare the same allowance and validity in your chosen checkout currency. Also check whether the selected package includes the Hushed promotion.
A data price and an app-number bonus are separate parts of the purchase. If you'll use the number, include its duration and any extra credit in the comparison. If you won't, concentrate on data, coverage, hotspot and the total you'll pay.
Which would we choose for each need?
- A US or Canadian app number: consider an eligible aloSIM package if Hushed's service and credit fit. Check verification acceptance separately.
- Australian bank texts: confirm the Australian line and bank arrangements. A new Hushed number doesn't receive a code addressed to your existing Australian number.
- Japan data for one phone: compare matched data offers, including our Japan plans. There is no need to pay for a feature you won't use.
- A destination's ordinary mobile number or essential calls: look for an offer explicitly providing that service. Don't infer it from the phrase “free phone number”.
For our plans, buy before travel, save the email and install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, or another steady trusted Wi-Fi connection if the airport connection fails. Follow the instructions for whichever provider you buy from; their setup rules can differ.
