Agree on the permitted part of the hike
The most useful Angels Landing conversation happens before anyone opens the lottery application. Does everyone actually want to climb the chains section, or has one enthusiastic friend quietly promoted a group holiday into an expedition?
You can hike to Scout Lookout without an Angels Landing permit. Continuing from Scout Lookout towards Angels Landing requires one, including for any portion of the chains section. Agreeing on that boundary helps settle whose name belongs on the application and who must be present when a ranger checks the permit. NPS permit boundary
Scout Lookout is a legitimate stopping point, not a consolation prize you need to apologise for. It is also a strenuous climb, covering most of the distance and elevation gain of the full hike. “No permit required” does not mean “easy”, and neither choice should be settled by whoever has already picked their favourite summit-photo pose.
The permit rules below were reviewed on 21 October 2026. They explain permission and group planning, not whether a particular person should attempt the climb.
Work out who wants which part of the day
The West Rim Trail leads up from the Grotto to Scout Lookout. Beyond the lookout, the Angels Landing route follows the exposed ridge with chains. NPS describes that final section as half a mile along a knife-edge ridge, and says not to attempt the ascent with a fear of heights, wet or icy ground, storm clouds nearby, or darkness before you finish. Winning the lottery changes none of those conditions. Official trail and conditions guidance
If two of four friends already know they want to stop at Scout Lookout, plan the permit around the two intending to continue. Have one of those two apply, with an eligible original alternate where the seasonal application allows it. Do not put the permit solely in the name of the friend who is good at organising holidays but has no intention of doing the permitted section.
A split group also needs a sensible arrangement for the people stopping. NPS suggests an agreed regrouping time and place. That is a decision for the actual party, including supervision needs, experience and conditions, rather than a promise that everyone can wait comfortably at the lookout for a fixed number of minutes. If splitting would leave someone without the support they need, choose a day the group can do together.
The named person matters as much as the headcount
An Angels Landing permit is not a transferable group voucher. The permit holder or the original alternate, together with all members of the permitted hiking party, must be at a checkpoint at the same time. Rangers can check permits at the Grotto, Scout Lookout or elsewhere on the trail, so the named person cannot simply wave everyone through once and assume their job is finished. Recreation.gov holder requirements
Use the name shown on the applicant’s photo ID. A seasonal applicant can name an alternate during the application, but neither name can be changed after submission. The original alternate can attend in the holder’s place; appointing a new alternate after the holder withdraws is a different thing, and is not allowed.
For a mixed group, check the original names against the plan:
| Your situation | The answer |
|---|---|
| Everyone stops at Scout Lookout | No Angels Landing permit is needed for that stopping point. The climb and conditions still have to suit the group. |
| Two people continue towards Angels Landing | Both must be covered by the permit, with the holder or original alternate present alongside the permitted party at checks. |
| The only named holder drops out and no original alternate attends | The others cannot take over that permit. Choose the non-permit stopping point if appropriate, or obtain a separate valid permit. |
| The holder wants to stay behind while the others continue | Do not rely on that arrangement. Checks can occur along the route; an attending original alternate would need to fulfil the named-person requirement. |
Each application covers up to six people including the applicant. Recreation.gov says a person named as a seasonal alternate may also submit their own application, but an applicant must not submit multiple applications. Use the Angels Landing rules for this application; another park’s lottery may treat alternate names differently.
Choose the lottery that fits your planning horizon
The seasonal lottery is the advance-planning route. It opens quarterly and lets you rank up to seven preferred dates and times, or ranges of dates and times. If you know when you will be in Zion, that is the opportunity to pursue before leaving the whole decision until the previous afternoon.
The day-before lottery opens 12:01 am to 3 pm Mountain time on the day before the hike, with NPS sending results after 4 pm. For a Tuesday hike, apply on Monday. Applying at the beginning of the open window does not improve the lottery odds. There are no Angels Landing permits to buy at a park office if the online lottery is unsuccessful. Lottery instructions, official booking conditions
Both routes charge US$6 per application, then US$3 per person if a permit is issued. For a successful application covering the two friends continuing beyond Scout Lookout, that is US$12 in permit-related charges. Park entry is separate. The per-person charge is automatic; Recreation.gov says a failed payment means the permit is not issued.
The confirmation email itself serves as the permit. Download or print it before reaching the trailhead, and carry the named holder’s or alternate’s photo ID. Unlike some backcountry camping reservations, there is no separate office collection step for this permit.
A smaller seasonal party is possible; a different trip is not
Suppose four people secure a seasonal permit but two withdraw three days before the hike. The holder can reduce the group size until two days before the reserved date and receive the US$3-per-person fee back for those removed. For a Friday hike, NPS gives 11:59 pm Mountain time on Wednesday as the deadline.
That flexibility only reduces the party. It does not let you increase the number of people, move the date or change the holder or alternate. Cancelling the whole seasonal permit by the same deadline refunds the per-person fees, while the US$6 application fee stays non-refundable. Seasonal changes and refunds
Day-before permits have a different rule: no changes, and no refunds. If that permit covers two people and a third friend decides to join, the third person is not covered. Their enthusiasm cannot be added to the booking retrospectively.
Time the start at the Grotto, not at the chains
The time slot on your permit applies to the start at the Grotto, shuttle stop 6. The published slots are before 9 am, 9 am–noon, and after noon. A 9 am–noon permit does not mean you can reach the Grotto at 12:30 pm because you expect to reach Scout Lookout later. It means beginning at the Grotto within the stated slot. Official start-time rule
Allow for reaching the park, getting to the shuttle and waiting to board before that start. The park shuttle itself does not require an Angels Landing permit or a shuttle reservation. Its seasonal operating schedule still matters for the return journey, so plan against the published shuttle timetable rather than assuming buses run whenever the group finishes.
Do the online administration while you have a connection and keep the permit offline. NPS specifically warns that service at the checkpoint is unreliable. For messages and booking tasks elsewhere on the American holiday, compare the allowances in The SIM Shop’s USA eSIM range.
Agree before applying that stopping at Scout Lookout, or abandoning the climb when conditions call for it, remains an acceptable outcome even after paying for a permit. A lottery win is permission to attempt a particular route, not an instruction from the rest of the group to finish it.
