Argentina tourist eSIMs: the passport route and the days you’ll need

Claro has a tourist registration route separate from its resident DNI process. If you only need travel data, our 3GB/30-day option at A$15.95 fits the eight-day, 900MB example; the 1GB/seven-day plan would end too soon. Choose the service first, then check both the data and the days.

Choose the connection you need in Argentina

If maps, messages, bookings and app calls cover your trip, a data-only eSIM lets you arrange the purchase before departure. If you need an Argentine number for ordinary calls or SMS as well, a local tourist line is worth looking at.

Visitors have a separate route through Claro, which is useful to know if you’ve found a form asking for a DNI, Argentina’s national identity document. That form belongs to the resident process; it doesn’t mean every tourist must buy a physical SIM.

Getting a local tourist line with a passport

Start with the eSIM button on Claro’s official tourist page, which links to its visitor activation flow. The requirements screen asks for a passport or document and a selfie. You’ll also need a compatible phone to add the eSIM using Claro’s generated QR code and complete its identity and phone checks.

If you instead reach the general prepaid eSIM process, which requires Argentine residence and a DNI, return to that tourist entry point. For a physical SIM, the tourist page directs you to a Claro service centre and asks for your passport and line number for activation.

Before paying, ask for the complete starter price, the included data and days, and any call credit or SMS you need. The linked tourist promotion terms cover 1–31 October 2026, so they don’t confirm a November price or package. An advertised data allowance also does not, by itself, include ordinary-call minutes.

Know when the local package begins

Ask whether the days start when you pay, activate the line or first connect. Claro’s October terms started the pack at purchase; a later offer needs its own confirmed rule. If a 30-day pack starts immediately and you buy it five full days before arrival, you’ll land with about 25 days left. For a full 30-day stay, that leaves you five days short.

Settle the timing before prepaying, or arrange the local purchase after arrival once the service centre can explain the expiry. A later date elsewhere on a registration screen isn’t an extra data allowance.

If you only need travel data

Our Argentina eSIM options provide a set total of data, without a daily reset. Their service days start on first supported-network connection, and you have 180 days from purchase to start, so buying before departure does not spend the running period in Australia.

They don’t include an ordinary local number, calls or SMS. WhatsApp voice and video calls, location sharing and backups use the same purchased data as maps and other apps. For a local package, keep those activities in your general-data budget unless that exact offer includes them; a WhatsApp logo alone doesn’t tell you which functions are covered.

These prices and the exact plan listings were checked on 31 October 2026. All five options are listed for 3G/4G service:

Total dataValidityPriceListed networks
1GB7 daysA$6.95Claro, Movistar
3GB30 daysA$15.95Claro, Movistar
5GB30 daysA$20.95Claro, Movistar
10GB30 daysA$35.95Movistar, Personal
20GB30 daysA$59.95Claro, Movistar

The network pair varies by option, and a listed network does not promise reception on every road through Patagonia. Hotspot sharing depends on the phone and network. The reload option is for the same area while the plan is active; it doesn’t promise extra service days.

Choose enough days as well as enough data

Say you’ve budgeted 800MB for a seven-day visit, with most of your other use on Wi-Fi. Our 1GB/seven-day plan fits at A$6.95, with about 200MB spare. Extend the stay to eight days and the assumed budget to 900MB, and the data still fits, but the plan ends too soon. The 3GB/30-day option at A$15.95 covers that longer visit, leaving about 2.1GB spare.

That is an A$9 difference. Here, the extra running time matters as much as the extra data; a phone full of restaurant screenshots is not a persuasive argument with an expiry clock…

For a different itinerary, choose Argentina, enter your dates and select your phone use and any sharing in our trip planner. It gives an estimated data budget and plan suggestions, including planning headroom. The figures above are an example budget, not an average for every visitor.

A heavier-use example: 22GB over a month

If you’ve allowed 22GB over 30 days, our 20GB country plan is 2GB short on its own. One priced option is 20GB plus 3GB as two separate eSIMs, for A$75.90 combined at the listed prices. That gives you 23GB overall, with 1GB spare, but the allowances don’t merge into one profile and each has its own 30-day period.

This involves a second setup: use the 20GB eSIM first, then install and switch to the 3GB eSIM when needed on steady trusted Wi-Fi after arrival. Follow both setup emails and choose the intended eSIM for mobile data. If you prefer one local profile, ask Claro for its current tourist package covering at least 22GB and all 30 days, including the full cost and start rule, to compare with that A$75.90 total.

Buy before departure, set up after landing

For a SIM Shop plan, check your exact phone and unlock status with our compatibility checker, buy before flying and save the setup email. Install after landing using working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Keep Australian-line data roaming off and follow the issued settings for the travel eSIM. Our Argentina setup guide covers the phone steps and what to do if data does not connect.
