Australia to Bhutan: price the through ticket before splitting the flights

Price the whole Paro itinerary through the announced Bangkok or Delhi partner routes, then compare separate flights plus necessary rooms, transfers and baggage. A through-ticket announcement does not guarantee every fare or disruption remedy. Choose a split when its total and intended stopover suit the holiday.

Compare complete journeys to Bhutan

If Bhutan is the main purpose of your holiday, start by pricing the complete journey to Paro on one ticket. You do not have to assume that the Australian flight and the Bhutan flight must be bought separately: Drukair has announced single-ticket arrangements with Thai Airways via Bangkok and Air India via Delhi, including Australian connections.

Separate bookings can still make sense, particularly when you actually want a stopover. The comparison becomes useful when you include the extra hotel nights, transfers and time that the split requires. A cheap flight to Bangkok is a good start to a Bangkok holiday. It is not yet the price of getting to Bhutan.

This guide uses airline information reviewed on 21 October 2026. The worked cost examples are deliberately hypothetical, so they explain the decision without pretending there is one airfare that applies to everyone.

Two single-ticket routes worth putting in the comparison

Drukair’s Thai Airways agreement, announced on 25 October 2025, describes a single ticket combining the airlines’ flights, with through passenger and baggage check-in via Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. It explicitly names Perth, Melbourne and Sydney among the destinations opened up through the partnership.

Air India’s 26 August 2026 announcement describes single-ticket Air India–Drukair journeys and coordinated passenger and baggage transfer via Delhi, with Melbourne and Sydney among the international markets mentioned.

Those are real alternatives to consider, not evidence that every date, fare or Australian departure point is available through both gateways. They also do not turn two flights bought independently into the same through-ticket product merely because the airlines have an agreement.

For the initial comparison, give Drukair’s reservation team or the ticketing agent your Australian departure city, both travel dates and Paro as the destination, and request the complete partner itinerary. Drukair lists reservation@drukair.com.bt and +975 17131300 on WhatsApp for interline booking assistance. Use those contacts to obtain the actual offer for your Australian departure, rather than treating the partnership announcement as a fare quote.

Use the returned offer to establish the actual flights, ticket arrangement and included baggage before payment. An itinerary summary with two airline logos is not, by itself, the same thing as a through ticket. If the seller is offering separate tickets, compare it in the separate-ticket column.

Compare the whole journey on the same dates

The most useful starting point is the Bhutan arrival and departure you want, then the Australian flights that fit them. Comparing a through itinerary arriving on Monday with a cheaper split that reaches Paro on Tuesday conceals a lost Bhutan day inside the price difference.

Keep both directions in the calculation. A split booking may need an overnight before the outbound Bhutan flight and another after leaving Paro, while another combination might need only one. Equally, a through ticket can have a long layover requiring a hotel of its own. Charge each option for the nights it actually creates, rather than automatically assigning all hotel costs to separate tickets.

Here is a simple example of why the travelling party matters. Assume the separate return airfares save A$300 per person against the through fare. For each added overnight stop, assume a room costs A$180, transfers cost A$60 per party and meals cost A$50 per person. These are example inputs, not current Bangkok or Delhi quotes; they assume one room fits the party and all other costs are equal.

ExampleAirfare saving from splittingExtra hotel, transfers and mealsSaving left
One adult, one extra gateway nightA$300A$180 + A$60 + A$50 = A$290A$10
Two adults sharing, one extra gateway nightA$600A$180 + A$60 + A$100 = A$340A$260
Two adults sharing, one extra night in each directionA$600A$360 + A$120 + A$200 = A$680A$80 more expensive

For the solo traveller, the apparent A$300 bargain has almost disappeared before valuing the extra travel time. For the couple sharing a room, the same one-night arrangement retains a more meaningful saving. Add a second night and the result reverses.

Apply the same calculation to the actual offers, including any baggage difference or other necessary charge. Keep amounts in the same currency when adding them, using the actual payment conversion where relevant. Bhutan accommodation and activities that are identical under both options cancel out of this narrow comparison; losing a paid night or changing the itinerary does not.

A through bag and a flexible ticket are different benefits

The partner announcements describe through baggage handling. They do not publish one universal refund, free-change or missed-connection policy covering every fare sold under the agreements. A single ticket is worth seeking because it can coordinate the journey, not because the phrase “interline” means every disruption becomes cost-free.

Choose the fare whose issued conditions fit the commitments you are making. If you need the freedom to change the Bhutan dates, buy a fare that expressly allows that change at a cost you accept. Do not pay a premium for an inflexible through fare on the assumption that the partnership gives it unrestricted flexibility.

On separate tickets, budget for a fresh check-in and baggage handling unless the airlines have explicitly provided a through arrangement for those bookings. The Drukair FAQ limits through baggage check-in to agreement airlines and directs passengers to raise the final destination at check-in. That is not permission to assume every independently booked combination qualifies. Drukair baggage and connection guidance.

Work back from check-in, then leave room for the arrival process

Drukair’s international counters open three hours before departure and close one hour before. Its current advisory recommends arriving at least two hours early, while the FAQ gives a minimum three-hour interval between connecting flights.

Those numbers describe different things. For a hypothetical 07:00 Drukair departure, the counters open at 04:00, the recommended airport arrival is by 05:00 and check-in closes at 06:00. An incoming flight scheduled to land at 04:00 leaves three hours until departure but only two until the counter closes. Those two hours still have to contain the arrival and transfer tasks required by that booking.

Do not treat the three-hour recommendation as proof that a particular separate-ticket transfer works. If the proposed route needs immigration, baggage collection and another check-in, select an itinerary that accommodates those steps and the relevant entry requirements. For a leisure trip where Bhutan is the priority, an intentional gateway stay is preferable to building the trip around a marginal self-transfer. It creates room, not immunity from disruption.

Drukair also asks passengers to reconfirm at least 72 hours before departure, by email or through the sales agent. Use the reservation email above from Australia; the airline’s 1300 number is toll-free within Bhutan, not an Australian calling service. Keep the revised flight details with the pickup contact for your Bhutan itinerary.

If you need data for reconfirmation email or established messaging accounts, our Bhutan phone-data guide covers the separate phone arrangements. Check any gateway-country stay as well.

Choose the split when the stopover is part of the holiday

If you want time in Bangkok or Delhi in its own right, the hotel and extra time are buying another experience, rather than merely repairing a difficult connection. A separate booking can then be a reasonable choice, provided its total price and change conditions suit you. A through ticket with a permitted stopover is also worth comparing; ticket structure and whether you leave the airport are not the same decision.

If your aim is simply to reach Bhutan and return home, favour the complete itinerary when the separate-ticket saving becomes small after the necessary extras. Keep the airline confirmations downloaded alongside the gateway hotel and transfer details. Then each option in the comparison describes a whole journey, including the night that a cheaper airfare may have left out.

The right gateway is the one that works for the whole holiday. The best-looking Australian airfare is only one part of that answer.
