BC Ferries on foot: turn your booking into a boarding pass

Give the ferry booking a proper check-in stop, with the terminal, boarding pass and booked deadline saved together.

Get the boarding pass before heading to the ferry

Walking onto a BC Ferries sailing removes the car-deck question, but it does not remove check-in. If you have booked in advance, you still need to exchange the booking reference for a boarding pass before you head into the waiting room.

That distinction is easy to miss when a confirmation email already looks like a ticket. For a foot passenger travelling from Vancouver’s Tsawwassen terminal to Swartz Bay for Victoria, the useful plan is to know when your booked check-in opens, when it closes and where you get the boarding pass. The later deadline for someone buying a walk-up fare is a separate rule.

The following example uses BC Ferries’ published instructions checked on 21 October 2026. It is about ordinary foot-passenger travel, with a hypothetical 14:00 departure to make the timings clear. It is not a checked sailing or a promise of available space. Foot-passenger instructions.

Put the three deadlines in the right order

For booked foot passengers from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, check-in opens 60 minutes before scheduled departure and closes 30 minutes before it. Without a booking, foot-passenger ticket sales and check-in close ten minutes before departure. Separately, advance bookings can be changed online or through the customer service centre at no charge up to two hours before departure. A kiosk cannot make that change. Tsawwassen check-in times and booking-change rules.

For that model 14:00 sailing, the day looks like this:

TimeWhat it means for the booking
11:45More than two hours remain, so you are still within the published advance-change window
12:15You are now inside two hours, so that advance-change window has closed
13:00–13:30The booked check-in window, subject to the kiosk’s next-sailing requirement
13:40You are ten minutes late for booked check-in, even though the ferry has not departed
13:50The walk-up foot-passenger sales and check-in cutoff
14:00The hypothetical scheduled departure

Now put yourself at check-in at 13:40. Twenty minutes before departure might feel comfortably early when you are standing near a ferry, but your booked check-in window ended ten minutes ago. The terminal’s rule says a booking will not be honoured outside its window, with travel then based on arrival order. The 13:50 walk-up cutoff does not bring the reservation back to life or establish that there is room for you.

See a ticket agent rather than walking straight towards boarding with the email. The ferry being visible is reassuring scenery; it is not an extension to check-in.

The kiosk is for a specific task

At Tsawwassen, you can exchange an eligible booking for a boarding pass at a self-serve kiosk or with a ticket agent. At the kiosk, choose the redemption option and enter the booking reference to obtain the boarding pass.

BC Ferries only lets you collect a boarding pass at the kiosk for the next upcoming sailing within the stated check-in window. Arriving early for a later departure therefore does not necessarily let you redeem the booking straight away. Keep the booked time in mind, and ask an agent if the kiosk directs you there. Redemption instructions.

Some bookings need a person regardless of how comfortable you are with a touchscreen. Listed discounted fares, including student, accessibility and BC Senior fares, require identification or documentation and cannot currently be redeemed at a kiosk. That is a processing rule, not a statement that an Australian visitor qualifies for those discounts.

Terminal facilities differ too. Comox’s Little River terminal, for example, requires you to get the boarding pass from a ticket agent. Do not turn the Tsawwassen kiosk process into a rule for every ferry terminal on your holiday.

If your day changes, separate the options

An earlier arrival, a late arrival and a sold-out online search can all lead to the same question: can I get on a different sailing? They do not have the same answer.

If you arrive earlier than the sailing you booked, BC Ferries says you may travel on the next available sailing where space permits, for the same day, route and direction. That gives you a possible option if the journey to the terminal goes well, but it is not a guaranteed upgrade to an earlier crossing.

If you miss your booked sailing, its fare can be put towards another sailing that day. Cancellations do not receive a refund under the published foot-passenger rule. The same-day fare provision is useful, but it is not confirmation of a place on the next ferry. Explain what happened to an agent and establish the available option. Earlier and missed sailings.

If the website shows no advance foot-passenger bookings, that alone does not prove the ferry has no remaining room. BC Ferries limits the space available to book in advance and still permits passengers to buy a foot fare at the terminal. Whether that works for your trip depends on available space and the relevant check-in rules, so do not build an immovable onward appointment around an unconfirmed crossing.

For someone whose day depends on one particular departure, the value of an advance booking is clearer than it is for a traveller happy to wait. Either way, protect the booking you actually have by arriving within its check-in window.

Give the terminal its own place in the itinerary

A ferry departure time is only one point in the day. Your bus, taxi or other transfer needs to get you to the correct terminal with enough time to find check-in and collect the boarding pass. It should not aim to deliver you at the final minute printed in the table.

Keep the terminal name, booking reference and check-in window together in your saved itinerary. That avoids searching through several emails while trying to work out whether you have reached the right place. The transfer on the other side also deserves its own plan rather than being treated as part of the ferry ticket by default.

For travel updates and messages ashore, our Canada SIM and eSIM buying guide covers the mobile choices. Keep the booking reference downloaded whichever service you choose, so you can get the boarding pass without searching an unsaved inbox. The boarding pass is still the document you need next.
