Belgrade to Bar by sleeper train: which berth should you book, and can the car come too?

Choose the berth category before buying: two adults wanting their own compartment can compare the two-bed sleeper with shared options. Car transport needs a separate available space, a vehicle no higher than 1.55 metres and the correct loading arrangements. Srbija Voz requires printed sleeper, couchette and car documents.

Choose the berth before adding the car

The Belgrade–Bar night train lets the journey towards the Adriatic take the place of another hotel night and another day on the road. How pleasant that trade feels depends on the berth you buy. A shared sleeping compartment, or couchette, and a private sleeper travel on the same train, but offer rather different nights.

For two adults who want a compartment to themselves, start with the two-bed sleeper. For a solo traveller watching the budget, compare a shared couchette with a three-bed sleeper before paying for a compartment to yourself. Bringing a car adds a separate height limit, reservation and loading appointment; it does not turn your passenger booking into an all-inclusive motorail package.

What the berth upgrade buys

The overnight Lovćen serves Zemun, Belgrade Centar and Bar. Seat61’s detailed route guide and carriage photographs describe four- and six-berth couchettes and one-, two- and three-bed sleepers with washbasins. These are useful distinctions when imagining the night: a washbasin sleeper is not a hotel room with an ensuite, while choosing fewer beds changes how many people share the compartment.

Srbija Voz publishes the following one-way Zemun–Bar components. The totals below are our arithmetic from its passenger fare and accommodation supplement, read on 21 October 2026. They are a planning comparison, not an available-space quote. Srbija Voz fare FAQ.

Accommodation per adultPassenger fareAccommodation supplementCombined amount
Six-berth couchette€23.80€8€31.80
Four-berth couchette€23.80€12€35.80
Three-bed sleeper€23.80€16€39.80
Two-bed sleeper€23.80€24€47.80
Single sleeper€35.60€48€83.60

For a pair, two places in the two-bed sleeper total €95.60. Two places in a four-berth couchette total €71.60, leaving a €24 difference for the pair. If privacy matters more than that €24, the two-bed option is the more sensible place to spend it. Buying two places in a four-berth compartment does not buy its other two spaces, however optimistic the group chat becomes.

For a solo traveller, the move from a three-bed sleeper to a single is a larger €43.80 jump. The single requires a first-class passenger fare as well as its higher supplement, so adding €48 to the second-class fare produces the wrong total. Choose it to have the compartment to yourself, rather than because “first class” sounds like a modest upgrade.

The Montenegro operator’s information page, checked on the same date, shows different passenger fares and some inconsistent arithmetic elsewhere in its table. We have therefore kept this comparison entirely on the Serbian railway’s published figures. Do not build a budget by mixing the lowest base fare on one site with a supplement from another. The amount displayed for the complete purchase is the amount to accept or decline before payment.

A car needs its own place, and its own station plan

Both operators publish a maximum car height of 1.55 metres and a €40 accompanied-car charge. A 1.70-metre vehicle fails that height rule by 15 centimetres, even if its length looks perfectly manageable. For that vehicle, plan the train journey without the car or choose a different means of moving it; the motorail price is irrelevant if the car does not qualify.

Using the Serbian figures, two adults in a two-bed sleeper plus one qualifying car make a €135.60 component budget: €95.60 for the travellers and €40 for the car. That example assumes all three required places can be bought for the same departure. It does not include road costs or grant permission to take a rental vehicle across a border.

The loading arrangements are direction-specific:

  • Southbound from Zemun: Srbija Voz’s published 2026 summer instructions put car loading at Zemun, no later than two hours before the train’s departure. That is a loading deadline, not the time to arrive at Belgrade Centar with a vehicle. The notice describes a summer formation, so it does not establish a car space on every later departure. Serbian operator instructions.
  • Northbound from Bar: the Montenegro operator lists car loading from 15:30 to 17:00 at Bar. Arriving at 17:30 would miss that published window by half an hour, regardless of the passenger train’s later departure. Montenegro car-transport conditions.

If the date-specific sale does not offer the vehicle space, do not buy passenger berths on the assumption that the car can be added at the platform. A passenger-only trip can use the boarding station printed on its ticket; a car trip must also satisfy the vehicle-loading arrangements. Keeping those two ideas separate prevents a cheap-looking fare from creating an expensive change of plan.

Buy online, but print the sleeping-car documents

You can book this journey online; older guides saying otherwise predate a July 2026 change. Srbija Voz’s 21 July 2026 notice introduced international online sales for Montenegro services through its website and app. It also says the domestic 5% online discount does not apply to international tickets, so do not subtract it from the amounts above. Official online-sales notice.

That same notice makes a firm distinction between document types. A seat ticket can be shown in the app or printed on A4. Tickets for sleepers, couchettes and car transport must be printed and presented before boarding. Save the files to your phone as a backup, but get the paper copies while you still have access to a printer. Printing them before leaving your accommodation is considerably less exciting than discovering you need a printer at the station.

Before paying, make the booking describe the night you intend to have: the correct direction and date, each traveller’s berth category, the required fare class and any vehicle space. After purchase, keep the issued carriage and berth details with the printouts. A reservation for a seat is not an invitation to find an empty bed later.

Keep the phone useful for the rest of the journey

Keep the paper tickets ready, then use the phone for station directions, accommodation messages and the journey after Bar. If you are choosing data for both sides of the border, check that the plan names Serbia and Montenegro; a broad “Europe” label is not enough. Our Balkans mobile-data guide explains that purchase decision.

Save the issued berth details and loading instructions offline as well. With the right bed, the right station and the required printouts settled, you can spend less of the evening organising the journey you hoped to sleep through.
