South Korea eSIMs: when a Korean number actually helps

Choose app data if your existing accounts meet your needs. For ordinary Korean calls or texts, compare a verified tourist voice service. KT and LG U+ require airport checks for relevant services; a tourist number doesn't establish banking or government personal authentication.

What does the Korean number need to do?

If you’ve been told to “get a Korean number”, ask what it needs to do. Receiving a call, receiving a booking code and passing a local identity check aren’t the same thing, however confidently the advice arrived in the group chat.

That difference can decide the purchase. Navigation and app messages may work with the accounts you already have. An ordinary Korean call or text needs the right local service, and a tourist number still won’t necessarily pass an identity check for another service.

We compare our own data plans with KT and LG U+ tourist offers below. Prices and operator conditions were checked on 25 October 2026. We haven’t made a local call, received a verification code or tested their coverage in Korea.

Give the number a specific job before buying it

Ask the restaurant, booking service or other business how it will contact you and what its account process requires. It may accept your existing app or international number, require an ordinary Korean call or text, or use a separate identity-verification system.

Those answers determine what to compare. A data-only travel eSIM can support app communication, but our checked offers don’t provide an ordinary Korean number, voice calls or SMS. A local tourist number may add useful services while still not qualifying for a bank or government identity check.

Keep access to the number registered to any essential Australian account under your Australian carrier’s rules too. A new data line doesn’t move bank texts to itself or change the cost of services on the Australian line.

KT’s tourist data and calling have different conditions

KT’s tourist eSIM page says incoming calls and SMS become available after airport identity and entry verification. For outgoing calls and texts, buy its voice product at the airport; Data Only can’t later be topped up for voice.

Selected VAT-inclusive prices are:

DurationKT DataKT Data & Voice
5 daysKRW27,500KRW33,000
10 daysKRW38,500KRW44,000
30 daysKRW71,500KRW77,000

For a five-day trip centred on ordinary Korean calls, choose KT Data & Voice at KRW33,000, purchased at a KT airport roaming centre with your passport for the entry check. Its advertised approximately 60 domestic minutes exceeds LG’s 20-minute label at the same five-day spend below. Neither the minute label nor the local number supplies banking or government personal authentication.

Its daily data is 11GB, replenished at midnight, followed by continued service at an advertised 5Mbps. An illustrative 12GB day puts the final 1GB beyond that threshold; another day’s unused amount isn’t a verified transfer. This is published allowance arithmetic, not a delivered-speed measurement.

The same voice-inclusive spend can buy different calling amounts

LG U+’s Data + Voice page shows five days of LTE data at KRW27,500, with a KRW5,500 voice addition labelled as 20 domestic minutes. Those displayed amounts add to KRW33,000, the same five-day headline spend as KT’s approximately 60-minute Voice offer above.

That does not make the inclusions equivalent. LG publishes KRW264 per domestic calling minute and KRW55 per domestic SMS for this service, with texts deducted from the calling balance. Ten minutes plus ten SMS therefore incur KRW3,190 at those published rates. Do not budget the same credit once for calls and again for messages.

LG requires passport verification at the airport counter for its voice service, with QR collection at Incheon, Gimpo or Gimhae. At Incheon Terminal 1, use the Level 1 arrival-hall counter at Gate F, open 24 hours; the Gate A counter operates 6 am–10 pm. Its data offer starts the running period with first data use and requires activation within 60 days of purchase. Although it advertises unlimited data, the notice retains network-congestion management conditions.

Incoming SMS is not the same as every app’s verification

LG’s FAQ distinguishes ordinary voice/SMS services from banking or government identity verification. It describes restaurant and taxi-app SMS verification with Voice/SMS service, while saying SMS verification is unavailable on Data-only service.

For LG’s stated restaurant/taxi SMS use, choose Data + Voice and complete the airport verification. Its FAQ excludes SMS verification on Data-only despite an incoming-text tick elsewhere. That gives you an operator-supported route to compare; the restaurant or app still decides which visitor accounts it accepts.

Check the exact LG product against the phone

The current LG product’s compatibility panel excludes Google Pixel, Motorola and OPPO devices, despite also describing an EID check for general eSIM support. A compatible digital-SIM feature on the phone doesn’t automatically establish acceptance by every operator product.

For a Pixel owner, exclude this LG eSIM product. If app data is the aim, use our linked compatibility checker with the exact model and country of purchase before selecting a SIM Shop plan. If it is not listed as supported, do not buy that eSIM on the strength of the phone’s EID alone.

For a supported phone needing laptop sharing, LG’s FAQ explicitly permits tethering, while noting device-dependent operation. Use that documented LG option rather than our fixed-data offers below when hotspot permission is essential. Keep suitable Wi-Fi for a critical work session as a practical backup; permission to tether is not a performance guarantee.

Our fixed-data South Korea choices

If your existing app accounts cover what you need, our South Korea data eSIMs offer these total allowances in Australian dollars:

Total dataRunning validityAUD price
1GB7 daysA$5.95
3GB30 daysA$13.95
5GB30 daysA$17.95
10GB30 daysA$27.95
20GB30 daysA$44.95
50GB30 daysA$89.95

All six start on the first supported-network connection, have a 60-day purchase-to-start window and aren’t reloadable. Data stops when the allowance is used. Hotspot use may depend on the phone and local network; confirm suitability if sharing is essential. LG’s published tethering permission above is more explicit.

Speed is described as network dependent. The 3GB option names KT and LG U+; other selected offers have mixed LG/SKT network-generation notes. If a particular operator is essential for your itinerary, choose its direct product rather than relying on an ambiguous network listing.

For an illustrative ten-day trip needing 8GB and only app communication, our 10GB/30-day offer at A$27.95 fits with 2GB spare. Direct local data services can provide much more data under different conditions, with prices in Korean won. Compare those complete services rather than calling an unconverted AUD number cheaper.

Buy around the issued deadline

For travel 70 days away, wait before buying: our offers and LG require first use within 60 days of purchase. A purchase during the final 30 days before arrival fits both published windows, assuming you begin using the service on arrival. Wait to install our plan until after landing, on airport Wi-Fi or a steady trusted fallback such as hotel Wi-Fi. Installing early won’t solve a purchase made outside its start window.

KT’s page still contains both 30-day and 90-day installation wording. For data-only service, buy within the final 30 days and install on arrival, satisfying the shorter published requirement instead of relying on 90 days. For the recommended calling product, purchase at the airport on arrival as KT requires; no advance-installation gamble is needed.

For the ten-day, 8GB app-data example, our 10GB plan at A$27.95 covers the allowance and dates. For the five-day ordinary-calling example, compare KT Data & Voice at its airport counter. For LG’s advertised restaurant/taxi SMS use, choose its Data + Voice product and complete passport verification. Check the specific account requirement before buying a tourist number for anything involving personal identity verification.

Before choosing our plan, check compatibility and unlock status, then use the South Korea setup guide for the device steps after arrival. If Japan is also on the itinerary, check that leg’s country inclusion separately.
