Compare Sri Lanka data, calls and usable days
At the prices below, another A$1.28 takes our Sri Lanka plan from 5GB to 10GB. If you expect to use more than 5GB, that small step buys data you’ll actually need, rather than a bigger number for its own sake.
Data quantity is only part of the choice. Mobitel’s tourist starters include local calls and a stated number of days; Dialog’s tourist offers combine data with calling credit in rupees. Decide whether you need that calling service, then check that both the allowance and period cover the trip.
We sell the SIM Shop plans below. Local tariff evidence and Dialog’s tourist page were checked on 31 October 2026; our store prices and terms were rechecked before publication. Our prices are in Australian dollars; local operators’ prices are in Sri Lankan rupees, labelled LKR. We haven’t converted one into the other or assumed that every traveller needs the same service.
The A$1.28 decision in our Sri Lanka range
The SIM Shop Sri Lanka eSIM is a data-only purchase listing Hutch as its network. These selected plans provide a set total allowance, without a fresh data bucket each morning.
| Plan | Price | What the choice means |
|---|---|---|
| 3 GB for 30 days | A$13.95 | A smaller allowance when the phone does relatively little away from Wi-Fi |
| 5 GB for 30 days | A$17.95 | The reference point for the current price step |
| 10 GB for 30 days | A$19.23 | Another 5 GB for A$1.28 more than the 5 GB option |
| 20 GB for 30 days | A$44.95 | A larger fixed allowance within the same period |
| 50 GB for 180 days | A$149.95 | A longer service period as well as a larger pool |
For a fourteen-day holiday expecting 8 GB, the 10 GB plan fits at A$19.23. It covers the example with 2 GB spare, whereas 5 GB falls 3 GB short; the extra A$1.28 is buying allowance the example actually needs. If your own use is much lower, the larger number is not a reason to spend more by itself.
The validity starts at first network connection, with a 180-day purchase-to-first-use window. That purchase window and the number of service days are separate clocks: buying a 30-day plan well before departure does not turn it into 180 days of mobile data.
Our plan supplies neither a Sri Lankan phone number nor ordinary calls and SMS. App calls and messages use its data, but an accommodation business that needs to ring a local number creates a different requirement.
When a local number makes Mobitel the better fit
The regulator’s Mobitel tourist tariff supplies important limits: these packages are for tourist visa holders, passports are validated and service cannot extend beyond the visa period. A 30-day bundle therefore isn’t a way to retain service past a visa that ends in ten days.
Mobitel’s tourist range lists the following tax-inclusive package values, with unlimited local calls and 1,000 local SMS in each starter.
| Tourist starter | Package value | Data | Stated duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan 01 | LKR821 | 15 GB | Seven days |
| Plan 02 | LKR1,540 | 30 GB | 30 days |
| Plan 03 | LKR5,131 | Non-stop data, subject to fair use and conditions | 30 days |
For the two-week example, Plan 01 has enough gigabytes but ends a week too soon. Plan 02 is the straightforward single-starter choice when the traveller also wants ordinary local calls. Choose the published 30-day starter for this example, without relying on buying a second seven-day starter or carrying its unused data forward.
The same tariff excludes premium short codes and SLT and Mobitel call-centre numbers from the unlimited calling allocation. It also states an out-of-bundle data charge of LKR0.30 per MB plus taxes. When a fixed allowance is exhausted, switch mobile data off until an appropriate add-on is active rather than assuming the phone will simply stop charging.
The regulator tariff establishes Mobitel’s starter terms, but it does not establish an airport eSIM collection route. If you want a verified arrival-counter option, Dialog’s tourist page explicitly offers physical SIMs and eSIMs at its two Bandaranaike arrival-lobby stores after customs. Bring your passport for verification. An unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone is needed for an eSIM; choose a physical SIM if your handset does not support eSIM.
Check sharing before choosing a work connection
Plan 03’s non-stop wording also comes with a fair-use qualification. The tariff evidence used here does not establish a numeric high-speed threshold, so we wouldn’t choose it on the assumption that unlimited high-speed laptop work is guaranteed. Our own hotspot support is conditional on the network and device as well; for work that cannot tolerate an interruption, organise accommodation with a separate usable connection rather than making either mobile label the whole work plan.
Dialog’s calling credit is money, rather than a minute allowance
Dialog’s tourist page shows tax-inclusive monthly prices of LKR1,399 for 20 GB with LKR174 calling credit, LKR1,799 for 30 GB with LKR164 credit, and LKR2,450 for 50 GB with LKR250 credit and unlimited WhatsApp.
Moving from the first to the second costs LKR400 for another 10 GB, while the displayed call credit falls by LKR10. A bigger data offer therefore doesn’t necessarily buy more ordinary calling, and LKR174 is not 174 minutes. For repeated ordinary local calls, Mobitel’s stated local-calling benefit gives you a clearer basis for the purchase than an amount of credit with no matching minute allowance.
Dialog’s two arrival-lobby stores are after customs at Bandaranaike, with passport verification for activation. Its physical-SIM reservation route requires the passport and order number at collection. The tourist page describes the prices as monthly without establishing an exact day-count expiry. For a purchase that must cover a defined final day, choose one of the explicitly dated options above.
Match the plan to the journey you are actually taking
A holiday linking Colombo, the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the south coast makes the arrival and transfer details as useful as the data allowance. Keep the driver’s agreed meeting point and contact details, your first accommodation address, booking references and an offline map saved before departure. Those give you something useful to open while the phone is still connecting, rather than a collection of booking emails that all require the same missing signal.
Our Hutch network listing is a plan detail, not a reception test along that route. More gigabytes won’t fix a signal gap at a particular property, and Mobitel’s selective 5G availability doesn’t make the selected Hutch travel plan a 5G product.
For a longer example, 45 days using 35 GB fits our 50 GB, 180-day option with 15 GB spare. Our 20 GB, 30-day option fails both requirements, while one Mobitel 30-day starter does not span the whole stay. The longer travel plan therefore covers that app-data example in one purchase, without arranging another package partway through.
You can buy our plan before departure and save the delivery email, then install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, following the supplied settings. The Sri Lanka setup guide covers those steps. Choose the allowance with the trip calendar beside it, and keep the local-number decision separate from how much data you’d like to have left.
