BKK to DMK: when Bangkok’s free airport shuttle makes sense

BKK and DMK require a road transfer. The published free BKK shuttle is for eligible connecting passengers with onward proof and identity documents, from Level 2 Gate 3, 05:00 to midnight. Assess the whole connection against airline deadlines; free transport does not establish a safe flight gap.

Check both Bangkok airport codes before buying

A flight search can make two Bangkok airports look like a minor detail. You land in Bangkok, leave from Bangkok and congratulate yourself on the cheaper fare, until the itinerary reveals that the middle of your connection involves crossing the city with your suitcase.

BKK is Suvarnabhumi; DMK is Don Mueang. If those codes differ between your arriving and departing flights, you need an airport transfer, not a walk to another gate. For eligible connecting passengers, the free shuttle from BKK is a useful option during its operating hours. It does not, however, turn a short gap between separately booked flights into a sensible connection.

This guide covers departure from Suvarnabhumi to Don Mueang. Work through the whole connection before buying the flights: out of BKK, across Bangkok and through DMK in time for the second airline’s deadline.

Who can use the free shuttle?

AOT reserves the inter-airport shuttle for passengers connecting between the two airports. Bring proof of your onward flight and your passport or national ID. It is not a free public bus for somebody visiting Don Mueang without an onward flight.

From Suvarnabhumi, the published pickup is Level 2, Gate 3, inner kerb. AOT lists service from 05:00 to midnight, every 30 minutes, with no fare. These details come from the airport’s transport guide, reviewed on 21 October 2026.

Save the onward itinerary before flying, with the airport code, passenger name and flight details visible. A screenshot or downloaded document avoids making access to your booking account the first task after landing; carry the actual identity document too.

At the pickup, look for the service to Don Mueang rather than following any sign that says “shuttle”. Suvarnabhumi also has internal airport buses. A lap of the airport might be free, but it is a rather unambitious start to the journey to DMK.

Count backwards from bag drop, not take-off

The departing flight time is the wrong end point for your road-transfer calculation. Before that comes the airline’s bag-drop or check-in deadline, followed by security and, for an international departure, immigration and the walk to the gate.

AirAsia’s published mobile check-in guidance says passengers with checked baggage must drop it at least 60 minutes before departure. It also recommends reaching the airport at least three hours before the flight and says boarding gates close 20 minutes before departure. The one-hour bag deadline is therefore a last limit, not the airline’s recommended arrival time.

For a hypothetical 15:00 AirAsia departure, that gives you three different times with different meanings:

TimeWhat it means in this example
12:00Three hours before departure, following the published airport-arrival advice
14:00The latest bag-drop point under the published 60-minute requirement
14:40Twenty minutes before departure, the published gate-closing point

Being in a vehicle outside DMK at 14:00 is not the same as having your suitcase accepted by then. Equally, completing online check-in does not remove the checked-baggage deadline. The apparent spare hour between bag drop and departure contains airport tasks, not an extra hour you can spend on the road.

What a five-hour connection can actually contain

Consider this planning exercise: your flight is scheduled to arrive at BKK at 10:00 and your next flight departs DMK at 15:00. These are invented flight times, and the durations below are chosen inputs for the exercise, not measured averages or a promised journey time.

Part of the transferAssumed allowanceClock after that step
Get off the arriving flight, complete arrival formalities and collect baggage75 minutes11:15
Reach the public shuttle pickup15 minutes11:30
Wait for a departure30 minutes12:00
Travel by road to DMK90 minutes13:30
Reach the departing airline’s bag-drop area15 minutes13:45

Those assumptions consume 3 hours 45 minutes. Although the flight times are five hours apart, the model leaves only 15 minutes before the 14:00 bag-drop limit, and reaches DMK well after the airline’s three-hour arrival recommendation. It has not added a separate allowance for a bag-drop queue.

Now move the arriving flight 45 minutes later while leaving everything else unchanged. You reach the bag-drop area at 14:30, half an hour beyond the stated limit. No extraordinary disaster is required to break the plan; an ordinary delay is enough.

We wouldn’t book that five-hour combination on the strength of this model. Choose a later onward flight or keep both flights at BKK when selecting the itinerary. If the attractive fare depends on every stage beating these assumptions, the saving comes with a much bigger commitment than the ticket price suggests.

This does not establish a universal minimum connection time. It shows how to reject an unsuitable combination without pretending that a particular number of hours guarantees success. For your own comparison, keep the actual airline’s deadline fixed, then put your flight times and realistic arrival and road allowances into the same sequence. A route estimate is useful input, but it cannot predict the queue you have not yet joined.

When paying for a car is the clearer choice

A paid transfer makes sense when you do not qualify for the shuttle, when you need to travel outside its hours, or when you prefer to leave without waiting for the next bus. It can remove the shuttle wait; it cannot remove the road journey or restore time already lost before you reach the public arrivals area.

For example, if you are ready to leave BKK at 01:00, the published free-shuttle window gives you no immediate departure. Use a paid service for an overnight transfer rather than building the plan around a bus before 05:00.

AOT lists 24-hour metered taxis on Level 1, Gates 4–7, inner kerb, using the airport queue-ticket system. The airport surcharge is THB 50 in addition to the meter, and baggage charges may apply. Its separate Grab pickup is Level 1, Gate 4, outer kerb. Those are different pickup arrangements, so choose the transport first and then go to its correct level and kerb. The published taxi components are not a fixed BKK–DMK total; an app quotation is the price for the actual requested ride.

If you are still choosing flights, avoid treating a taxi as the automatic rescue for an otherwise weak connection. The better purchase is often the flight combination that gives you room to arrive normally, rather than the one that requires a heroic performance from everybody between the aircraft door and bag drop.

Keep your phone useful without making it essential to the plan

Download both flight itineraries and save “BKK Level 2 Gate 3” alongside the onward airport code. That gives you the important transfer information even if you cannot open an app immediately after arrival.

Once you know how you will cross the city, data can help with flight messages, a road estimate or an app-car request. Our Thailand eSIM buying guide separates app data from local plans with ordinary calling. Have any phone setup sorted before relying on those live tools; the downloaded onward itinerary remains useful at the shuttle.

Before buying the flights, put BKK and DMK next to the actual times. The free shuttle can make a well-spaced connection cheaper. It should not be the reason you accept a connection that only works when nothing takes longer than expected.
