Botswana SIM or eSIM: daytime data, local calls and the hours behind unlimited

Choose service for the hours you need it. Night Surfers is an overnight supplement, while MyCombo includes daytime data and national calls. A fixed-data travel eSIM can cover app use without a local calling line. Include getting the SIM and registering it in the local purchase, and check onward countries separately.

Choose Botswana data for the hours you need it

A seven-day data bundle that wakes up at 9 pm is rather less helpful when your transfer leaves at 9 am. In Botswana, that is a real purchasing distinction: Mascom’s Night Surfers offer is intended for overnight use, while MyCombo combines all-access data with national calls and texts.

Start with the hours you need data and whether you need ordinary Botswana calls. A night bundle may be useful for an evening download, but maps and transfer messages need service during the day. If you also need to ring local numbers, count those minutes alongside the data.

Local offers and registration rules below were checked on 21 October 2026. The SIM Shop prices and terms were checked on 25 October. Published network names do not tell us how well a phone will work at a particular safari camp.

MyCombo includes national calls, rather than just internet data

Mascom’s MyCombo page lists the following VAT-inclusive bundle prices in Botswana pula, written as P:

Bundle priceValidityDataNational minutesNational SMS
P51 day25 MB33
P151 day100 MB1010
P457 days500 MB2020
P657 days2 GB3020
P9514 days1 GB5030
P12514 days3 GB7530
P16530 days2 GB10050
P24530 days8 GB150100

These national minutes and texts cover Mascom and other Botswana networks. They do not include international calling, international texting or roaming, and the bundled data is for Botswana. Standard out-of-bundle charging applies after the relevant allowance is depleted.

For a fortnight needing 2.5 GB and 60 national call minutes, P125 meets both quantities with 0.5 GB and 15 minutes spare. P95 covers the same advertised period but misses both targets, by 1.5 GB and ten minutes. Saving P30 would therefore leave you needing additional service.

To subscribe on an eligible Mascom line, the published routes include *123#, Mascom Online and MascomChat at +267 71 999 999. Check the expiry shown for your purchase before planning the final day around it.

Mascom sells a local eSIM, with a published P10 price

The operator’s eSIM page directs buyers to a Mascom shop for the QR and lists a P10 cost. Its FAQ allows a new Mascom eSIM number as well as conversion of an existing line, subject to the normal registration process.

Include that issue cost when budgeting: P10 for the eSIM plus P125 for the fortnightly MyCombo bundle adds to P135 in published components. Confirm the complete new-line price and registration requirements at the shop before treating it as your final bill.

Converting an existing Mascom physical SIM to eSIM makes that Mascom card unusable. This is a format change for the same number, rather than two independent copies of a line, and it does not refer to your separate Australian SIM.

Registering online still requires a SIM

Mascom’s public registration entry explicitly accepts a Botswana ID or foreign passport number. For a new SIM, it asks for the phone number and PUK code printed on the SIM package, then a document scan, selfie video and customer information. Online registration therefore exists, but that screen does not deliver a new SIM to someone who has not obtained one.

The customer-information FAQ asks shop visitors for an original Omang, Botswana’s ID, or a valid passport, and says foreign-national accounts may require additional documents. It also advertises online document uploads. A passport route is published; approval for an individual traveller is still an identity-check outcome.

There is a dated notice to act on if you already hold a Mascom line: the same FAQ says non-compliant customers may face restrictions or disconnection after 31 October 2026. An unfinished upload is not proof of completed verification. If a submission fails, follow the official retry instructions or use a Mascom shop; prepaid support is 124 from a Mascom handset. This notice does not mean that every new visitor is automatically barred after October.

Night Surfers is an overnight supplement

The Night Surfers shop listing shows these prices:

Advertised periodBundle price
1 dayP10
7 daysP60
14 daysP110
30 daysP210

The operator’s service table divides the night into 21:00–22:59 at 5 Mbps and 23:00–05:00 at network speed. Its terms say speeds depend on network availability, exclude data roaming and limit the offer to private, non-commercial use.

Those terms also mix a 21:00–05:00 window with a six-hour description, plus different next-day and next-session rules for replacement purchases. They do not provide a consistent basis for promising immediate access after every purchase. Do not build an arrival connection or urgent upload around an assumed instant start.

For seven days of daytime transfers, choosing P60 Night Surfers instead of P65 MyCombo saves P5 in bundle price but fails the daytime-data requirement. Adding those two advertised bundles totals P125 before obtaining the line, but that sum does not establish how simultaneous bundles are prioritised. Night Surfers can be considered for an existing customer’s overnight use; it is not the sole connection recommended here for daytime travel.

A SIM Shop allowance for app-based travel

Our Botswana eSIM supplies total data, without an ordinary local number, conventional calls or SMS. The fixed-data options are:

Total dataValidityPrice in AUD
1 GB7 daysA$12.23
3 GB30 daysA$33.95
5 GB30 daysA$48.95
10 GB30 daysA$96.95
20 GB30 daysA$165.95

For a fourteen-day visit expecting 2.5 GB of app data, our 3 GB plan leaves 0.5 GB spare. Moving to 5 GB costs A$15 more and increases that margin to 2.5 GB. Neither replaces the 60 ordinary national call minutes in the MyCombo example; choose the local calling service if those calls are essential.

The selected variants list beMobile and Orange, with 4G access, and start validity on first supported-network connection. They are not Mascom contracts, and an eSIM label alone does not establish which network any provider uses. Hotspot support is listed subject to the network and handset, rather than as a guarantee of a stable laptop connection at every lodge.

For maps, bookings and app conversations, this gives you one allowance bought in AUD before departure. Compare that app-data purchase with the local calling service you need, keeping the pula and AUD prices in their own currencies.

Keep the border and the arrival setup separate

MyCombo’s domestic data and the Botswana-only travel plan both stop being useful for mobile data when you cross into Zimbabwe. For that leg, NetOne’s Tourist SIM gives visitors a local physical-SIM or eSIM route: take your original valid foreign passport to register, then have the shop activate the chosen bundle through *401# and confirm it is working before you leave. Its bundle table and general terms show different validity periods, so get the expiry for your selected bundle confirmed at purchase rather than assuming the SIM’s 90-day life is the data allowance’s expiry.

Buy your SIM Shop plan before departure and save the email, then install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection using the Botswana setup guide. Keep Australian-line data roaming off unless deliberately using that carrier’s roaming service, and follow the issued instructions for the travel line.

Save the lodge address, transfer details and booking confirmations offline before leaving home. They remain useful when mobile data is unavailable, regardless of the supplier you choose. A local number is worth buying when you need ordinary local calls; for app conversations and daytime travel data, choose the fixed allowance that covers your actual stay, without expecting an overnight offer to do the daytime shift.
