Match a Brunei tourist plan to the calls you need
A local number can be useful in Brunei, but it does not necessarily include outgoing calls. Imagine’s Smart 5G Tourist plan supports incoming calls and SMS while excluding outgoing calls and texts. DST’s Easi Tourist starter includes local calling credit, but DST excludes that particular tourist product from its eSIM service.
Before comparing gigabytes, decide whether you need to receive a call, make one or use an app. Then check the phone: an eSIM-only handset rules out the named DST tourist starter even if its calling credit would otherwise be useful.
Local offers and requirements below were checked on 21 October 2026. We sell the travel-data options included here; those prices and terms were checked on 25 October. The comparison keeps the seven-day starter benefits separate from a line that remains valid for thirty days.
Two B$15 starters, but different calls and data
B$ below means Brunei dollars. The local bundles should be compared with each other in that currency; our Australian-dollar prices appear separately later.
| Initial local offer | Advertised data | Benefit period | Ordinary calling and SMS | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DST Easi Tourist, B$15 | 3 GB local data | 7 days from activation | B$3 bonus credit for local outgoing calls and SMS; incoming service also listed | Tourist product excluded from DST eSIM eligibility |
| Imagine Smart 5G Tourist Starter, B$15 | 40 GB | 30 days from activation | Incoming calls and SMS supported; no outgoing calls or SMS | Physical SIM or eSIM |
| Imagine Smart 5G Tourist Double Data, B$30 | 80 GB | 30 days from activation | Same incoming-only calling and SMS distinction | Physical SIM or eSIM |
DST publishes its starter on the Easi Tourist page. Imagine’s mobile page links to its named tourist FAQ and terms, dated 24 October 2025. These are the documents still linked when checked, rather than a newly announced 2026 promotion.
At the same B$15 headline, Imagine’s starter advertises 37 GB more data and a longer initial period than DST’s starter. It does not provide DST’s outgoing-call credit, so the extra data is not a substitute for that function.
Choose incoming service, outgoing calling or app data
Imagine’s tourist FAQ explicitly permits incoming calls and text messages. Its data-only description therefore does not mean the line has no incoming telephone service.
If someone needs to reach you on a local number, that is a relevant feature. It is not the plan for an ordinary outgoing call, so settle that detail before cheerfully promising someone you will give them a quick ring back. Receiving a message also does not guarantee that a particular bank, booking app or identity service accepts the number for verification.
For three weeks expecting 25 GB and incoming local messages, the 40 GB Imagine starter meets the stated amount and period with 15 GB spare. Our largest listed Brunei package is 20 GB, leaving a 5 GB gap for that same data requirement, and it supplies no ordinary incoming SMS service.
DST’s B$3 starter credit is a money balance for its specified local use, rather than three minutes or an unlimited-calling allowance. Its broader FAQ also lists credit bonus among unavailable tourist services despite describing the B$3 starter bonus elsewhere. Treat the advertised starter benefit separately from any assumption that later recharges earn more bonus credit.
An eSIM-only phone rules out this DST tourist starter
DST’s eSIM FAQ explicitly says Easi Tourist is currently excluded, although ordinary Easi, Mobi and Freedom plans support eSIM. Adding DST’s general B$10 eSIM issue fee to the tourist starter does not make that excluded product eligible.
For an eSIM-only handset, Imagine’s named tourist plan is a published local eSIM option, subject to registration and device compatibility. Our Brunei travel plans are eSIMs too. They have different calling features, so choose between them on the service needed rather than assuming every digital SIM supplies a local number.
If your phone has a physical tray, the DST tourist starter remains an option to evaluate for its local outgoing credit. The tourist exclusion is not a claim that DST sells no eSIMs at all.
Thirty days of line validity does not extend seven days of starter data
DST’s complete Easi Tourist FAQ section gives the tourist line thirty days before automatic expiry, while the 3 GB and B$3 starter benefits last seven days. Recharge is possible during the line’s life, but credit-validity days do not accumulate.
For a twelve-day stay using 2 GB across the trip, the starter has enough data numerically and insufficient initial benefit time. Its spare 1 GB does not stay included until day twelve merely because the line is still usable. A subsequent data purchase would be a separate purchase, rather than a free five-day extension.
Useful published controls on the tourist line are *102# for credit balance, *106# for bonus credit and *133# for data balance or available add-ons. DST lists first-call or first-text activation. Those instructions belong to the local tourist SIM, rather than our travel eSIM’s activation process.
Imagine’s tourist terms likewise say top-ups do not extend its initial thirty days and unused data expires. Its FAQ says internet stops at data exhaustion and mentions both a new plan and a booster route; no exact small-booster price or extra validity is established here.
Where the local registration takes place
Imagine’s terms limit this tourist offer to its centres at Brunei International Airport and Yayasan. The FAQ requests a copy of identification, such as a passport, plus a flight itinerary showing a stay of no more than thirty days. Its terms also require valid travel documents at registration; they do not establish what visa permission any individual Australian needs.
DST directs tourist buyers to its airport branch or selected branches with a passport and travel documents. Neither published route guarantees counter stock, a particular queue length or approval for an individual applicant. Save the first address and transfer details offline before departure so an unavailable counter does not leave the essential arrival information out of reach.
The Imagine terms specify personal use and state that payments become non-refundable once the plan is activated. Choose the right format and allowance before activating, rather than treating a larger package as something to exchange later.
Brunei travel data when app conversations are enough
The SIM Shop Brunei eSIM options are:
| Total allowance | Validity | Price in AUD | Listed access |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | A$11.88 | 4G |
| 3 GB | 30 days | A$28.95 | 4G/5G |
| 10 GB | 30 days | A$87.95 | 4G |
| 20 GB | 30 days | A$103.95 | 4G |
These are total allowances, without a daily data reset. The 20 GB option costs A$16 more than 10 GB and doubles the allowance, but both list 4G access. Spending more on volume does not buy a documented 5G upgrade. The 3 GB plan carries the 4G/5G label, and actual access still depends on the phone and network.
Return to that twelve-day stay using 2 GB. If maps, bookings and app conversations are all you need, our 3 GB/30-day option at A$28.95 covers the trip with 1 GB spare. The same purchase would leave an ordinary outgoing-call requirement unanswered; an app call needs an internet connection at both ends.
Our plan validity starts on first supported-network connection, and hotspot availability depends on the network and device. Buy before departure and save the delivery email, then install after landing on working airport or hotel Wi-Fi, or another steady, trusted Wi-Fi connection, following the issued instructions. Keep Australian-line data roaming off unless deliberately using the home carrier’s roaming service.
If someone must be able to ring your local number, keep Imagine’s incoming service in the comparison. If you must ring them back, check an outgoing-calling service such as DST’s named starter, with its physical-SIM requirement. For an onward trip around Borneo, check Malaysia separately: none of these Brunei-only purchases includes service in Malaysia.
