Choose the Budapest pools for your family
Budapest’s grand baths look like an excellent family holiday idea until someone reads the age policy. The adults have pictured a leisurely soak beside yellow palace walls; the youngest member of the party has packed goggles and is expecting a waterslide. Those are two quite different afternoons.
For an ordinary family visit with a child under 14, choose Palatinus rather than Széchenyi. Széchenyi excludes under-14s from the entire bath, including its outdoor pools. Palatinus has a shallow indoor children’s pool, but its outdoor children’s pool and wave pool are summer facilities. A family admission also does not give younger children permission to use its thermal pools.
Start with the youngest child, then ask what each person wants from the water: shallow play, lengths or a thermal-bath visit. That gives you a more useful choice than the most recognisable building in the holiday photos.
Széchenyi’s rule applies at the gate
Since 1 August 2025, Széchenyi’s under-14 restriction has covered the whole complex. An old suggestion to take younger children only into the outdoor pools no longer works, and neither does buying an adult ticket for a child. For an eligible teenager, bring their original passport or identity card because staff may request proof of age. Széchenyi’s official FAQ
The practical dividing line is a fourteenth birthday. A family with children aged 12 and 16 cannot have an ordinary all-together visit at Széchenyi; a family whose youngest is 14 clears this particular age rule. The operator has a separate specialist-treatment route, but that is not a holiday workaround and is outside this leisure guide.
Nor can a younger child simply accompany the adults without swimming. The whole-site restriction still applies, and the operator does not offer a visitor-only ticket. If Széchenyi is the parents’ must-do experience, it belongs in a separate adult outing while another responsible adult looks after the younger children elsewhere. If the aim is time together, choose the family venue instead.
Palatinus is more than a summer lido, but winter is a different visit
Palatinus sits on Margaret Island and combines indoor bathing with a much larger outdoor summer offering. Its indoor children’s pool has toys and mini-slides, with water listed at 32–34°C and a depth ranging from zero to 50 cm. The separate outdoor children’s pool and wave pool are explicitly summer-only. Official pool descriptions
That distinction matters for an autumn or winter city break. You can plan a shallow-water play session without promising the children the wave pool they spotted in a summer photograph. It is a smaller swimming outing, which may suit younger children very well, but it is not the full outdoor water-park experience.
For older children, be honest about the activity they want. A teenager keen to swim lengths has a different reason to visit from one hoping to spend hours on slides. Palatinus lists its outdoor swimming pool as operating year-round, with a heated corridor for winter access, a depth of 1.7–1.9 metres and a swimming-cap requirement. That is a swimming facility, not a substitute for a shallow play pool.
The family pool map
The pool status below was checked on 21 October 2026. The pool numbers match Palatinus’s official services map, so they are more useful on arrival than remembering which photograph looked nicest.
| Facility | What it means for this family visit | Status on 21 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Széchenyi, entire bath | Ordinary entry requires every visitor to be at least 14 | Under-14s excluded, including outdoors |
| Palatinus P12, indoor children’s pool | The shallow play option for younger children | Available |
| Palatinus P3, outdoor children’s pool | A separate summer play pool | Unavailable |
| Palatinus P1, wave pool | A summer attraction, not part of the current autumn visit | Unavailable |
| Palatinus P6, swimming pool | Length swimming; bring a swimming cap | Available |
| Palatinus P15 medical pool and P14 hot medicinal plunge | Not part of an ordinary under-14 leisure swim | Available to eligible users; availability does not remove age restrictions |
The current indicators come from Palatinus’s available-services page. Use that same numbered list for your travel date: a green indicator means a facility is available, not that every member of the family is eligible to use it. Summer photographs and a general opening calendar cannot establish which individual pools are operating.
Warm water does not automatically mean a children’s pool
Palatinus names particular medical and hot-plunge pools with an under-14 restriction. Budapest Spas’ general guidance also excludes under-14s from thermal-water pools at its other baths unless there is written medical advice. For a normal family outing, keep the younger children’s plan to the designated child facilities and suitable swimming areas, rather than treating every warm outdoor pool as fair game. Budapest Spas’ family guidance
This is especially relevant when an adult sees an available outdoor sitting pool and assumes the whole family can settle in. A facility being open, warm or shallow does not establish that it is a children’s facility. The useful question is its designated use and rule, not whether a child’s feet could reach the bottom. This guide explains admission and facilities, not individual medical suitability.
Put the session into the actual day
As checked on 21 October, Palatinus publishes 9 am to 4 pm every day, with the earlier closing applying from 19 October. We would make an autumn visit a morning or early-afternoon activity, rather than tack it onto the end of a sightseeing day. A 3 pm arrival leaves only an hour before closing, before allowing for changing and getting everyone organised. Current opening hours
The autumn price list also makes family composition worth a moment’s attention. From 14 September 2026, a four-person family ticket requires at least two children aged 3–14 and costs HUF 10,100 on weekdays or HUF 11,200 on weekends and holidays. For two adults and children aged six and ten, separate weekday tickets total HUF 12,600: two at HUF 3,800 plus two at HUF 2,500. The family ticket saves HUF 2,500 on that admission comparison. For 23 October 2026, the operator specifically listed weekend prices. Palatinus’s 2026 prices
Two adults, a ten-year-old and a sixteen-year-old cannot use that four-person family offer, because only one child meets its stated age condition. The three-person family offer requires one child aged 3–14, so that is the relevant bundle for the two parents and ten-year-old, with a separate ticket for the teenager. The figures above are admission prices, not a total including optional purchases or travel.
Bus 26 serves the bath entrance on Margaret Island. The operator also advertises a free PALA shuttle, but describes it as a summer service, so it should not be the transport plan for this October visit. Palatinus access information
Keep the phone useful before it goes in the locker
Check the numbered pool list for your visit, save the address and tickets, then agree the family’s meeting arrangements. If you need mobile data for those checks and the wider Budapest stay, our Hungary SIM and roaming comparison separates app data from ordinary calling and local-number needs.
Keep the tickets and bath address available offline. Once you have chosen the right pool, it is rather nice for the family’s most complicated remaining negotiation to be whose towel is whose.
