Chetumal to Belize’s cayes: the ferry day is longer than the boat ride

Choose the island where you are staying before buying International Islander’s ticket. San Pedro is the Ambergris Caye endpoint and border stop for Caye Caulker passengers. The timetable example takes five hours fifteen minutes from Chetumal check-in to Caye Caulker, even though the local arrival time makes it look shorter.

Choose the Belize island before buying the crossing

The ferry from Chetumal is an appealing way to move from Mexico into an island stay in Belize. You can book to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye or continue to Caye Caulker, avoiding a journey down to Belize City before heading back out to the islands. Choose the island where you want to stay before buying the ticket. San Pedro is both the Ambergris Caye destination and the border stop for passengers continuing to Caye Caulker.

This guide follows International Islander Ferries. Its timetable, terminals and check-in instructions belong together; mixing its morning sailing with another operator’s ticket rules is an unnecessarily creative approach to crossing a border.

Choose the island before choosing the fare

The operator’s information checked on 21 October 2026 lists a 10:00 departure from Chetumal. Its standard one-way fares are MXN 1,340 to San Pedro and MXN 1,540 to Caye Caulker. These are the published ferry fares, not an all-in border-crossing budget or a live seat quotation. International Islander schedule and fares

For a couple, choosing the Caye Caulker endpoint adds MXN 400 one way compared with ending at San Pedro: two tickets multiplied by the MXN 200 difference. That does not make San Pedro the economical choice if your booked room is on Caye Caulker. You would still need to reach the island where you are sleeping.

Likewise, do not buy the Caye Caulker ticket merely because it sounds like the more complete journey. If you are staying on Ambergris Caye, San Pedro is the relevant endpoint. The final trip from that landing to your accommodation is separate from the international crossing.

Put the border stop into the timetable

International Islander allows 90 minutes from Chetumal to San Pedro, then an hour for immigration and customs before the 45-minute leg to Caye Caulker. The resulting 3 hours 15 minutes is a planning estimate with a border process inside it, not continuous time speeding across the water. Before-you-travel instructions

There is also a clock change. Chetumal is at UTC−5 and Belize at UTC−6, so Belize’s local clock is one hour behind. Neither location changes clocks during 2026. Chetumal time zone, Belize time zone

Using the published morning departure, the sequence looks like this:

StageLocal time in the operator’s planning model
Arrive for Chetumal check-in08:00 in Mexico
Depart Chetumal10:00 in Mexico
Reach San Pedro after 90 minutes10:30 in Belize
Finish the allocated border hour11:30 in Belize
Reach Caye Caulker after another 45 minutes12:15 in Belize

The operator also advertises those 10:30 and 12:15 arrival times. They remain estimates, not appointments with immigration or a guarantee that you will be at your hotel by lunch. Published arrival information

From the 08:00 check-in target to the estimated Caye Caulker landing, the model spans 5 hours 15 minutes. Looking only at the local clocks makes it appear an hour shorter. Add your journey to the Chetumal terminal and the final accommodation transfer, and this is a substantial travel day even when the boats run to plan.

Arrive two hours early, not at the closing time

The operator’s travel instructions require check-in at least two hours before departure, with your passport and reservation. Its homepage separately says Chetumal check-in closes at 09:00. Follow the earlier 08:00 arrival instruction; the closing time is not a suggested arrival time. Check-in requirements

Use these exact terminal names when arranging your transfer:

  • Chetumal: Muelle Fiscal APIQROO.
  • San Pedro: San Pedro International Ferry Terminal.
  • Caye Caulker: E-Z Boy Tours, also labelled EZ-BOYZ dock on the schedule.

Those are the operator’s listed locations. Save the relevant map pin with your reservation, rather than asking for an unspecified water-taxi dock. Terminal list

For a morning departure, staying in Chetumal the previous night is the calmer choice if your alternative involves a long same-morning journey from elsewhere in Mexico. The reason is the 08:00 terminal target, not a claim that every bus from another town is impossible. A transfer that reaches Chetumal at 08:00 still has to get you to the dock.

Give the return journey its own clock

The published return departure from Caye Caulker is 12:45, while San Pedro’s is 14:30. Applying the two-hour check-in instruction gives 10:45 at Caye Caulker or 12:30 at San Pedro. Do not use the San Pedro time when boarding on Caye Caulker. Schedule, check-in instructions

For the full Caye Caulker–Chetumal journey, adding the operator’s 3 hours 15 minutes to 12:45 gives 16:00 on the Belize clock, which is 17:00 in Chetumal. This is a calculation from the published duration, not a verified bus connection or a promise that Mexican entry processing is finished then.

If your onward plan involves an expensive flight or a long-distance departure you cannot afford to miss, stay in Chetumal and continue the following day. That gives the border crossing room to behave like a border crossing, rather than asking it to perform as a punctual shuttle between two bookings.

Keep the passport with you, and the arrival day relaxed

Australian nationals are listed as not requiring a Belize entry visa in the country’s official nationality table. That does not remove immigration clearance, and the permission granted on arrival still governs your stay. Belize Immigration visa guidance

Keep the passport and reservation in the bag you can reach during the journey. Schedule your first paid island activity for the next day if missing it would be costly; the published lunchtime arrival is better used for settling in than as the foundation of a tight tour connection.

Save your terminal pin, accommodation address and booking details offline before leaving Wi-Fi. For arrival messages on each side of the border, compare the countries you actually need: our Mexico phone-data guide and Belize SIM and eSIM guide cover separate choices. A Mexico-labelled plan does not establish service in Belize or during the crossing.
