Roaming vs eSIM

Chile SIM or eSIM: the three clocks that decide what to buy

For Chile, separate registering and activating the SIM, foreign-phone registration and bundle expiry. Entel prepaid uses a physical SIM; Recarga Mágica requires enrolment plus an exact CLP 10,000 recharge. A short data-only visit can suit a smaller travel eSIM. For a forty-five-day local-number stay, complete handset registration and budget for another bundle.

Choose Chile data for the stay you have booked

A Chilean prepaid SIM can give you a local number and a substantial data allowance, but buying the chip is only the beginning of the purchase. You still need to activate the service in your name, enrol in the intended tariff and, for a longer stay with a foreign-bought phone, register the handset separately. Those are different jobs, and finishing one does not quietly complete the others.

A ten-day visit using maps and messages is a different purchase from a forty-five-day stay that needs a Chilean number. Work out the dates and calling needs first. Entel’s advertised 50 GB bundle then deserves a closer look: the recharge has to be exactly right, rather than approximately generous.

Local prices and rules below were checked on 21 October 2026. We sell the travel-data options included here; our prices and terms were checked on 25 October. Chilean pesos are shown as CLP and Australian dollars as A$.

Buying a local SIM does not buy an Entel prepaid eSIM

Entel’s prepaid eSIM answer limits its eSIM to contracted mobile plans. Its prepaid route therefore means a physical SIM, which matters if your phone has no SIM tray. That is Entel’s restriction, rather than a finding that every Chilean operator has the same policy.

For a new prepaid line, Entel’s activation instructions ask for your country of origin, passport or other accepted identity document, email, address and the SIM number printed on the chip. Foreign visitors can use a passport, with biometric identity validation included in the process. Having a passport is the documented route into activation, rather than a guarantee that an individual identity check will succeed.

Complete the identity step before relying on later recharges. Entel’s prepaid-registration explanation says an unregistered line cannot receive new recharges, although existing balance can still be used and calls received until that balance runs out.

Three clocks are running, and only one belongs to the data bundle

What you are dealing withWhat it controlsWhat it means for the trip
SIM identity registrationActivation and recharge access for your Entel prepaid serviceComplete the identity process for the line; buying the physical chip does not finish it
Foreign-phone registrationContinued use of a foreign-bought handset with a Chilean mobile company’s SIMAn unregistered phone can be blocked after 30 days from first use, independently of remaining data
Bundle validityHow long the purchased data and minutes remain availableRecarga Mágica lasts 30 days; the line remaining active does not preserve an expired bundle

The distinction becomes useful on a longer holiday. A recharge can leave you with plenty of data while the handset reaches its registration limit, and a registered handset can work perfectly while its purchased bundle has expired. Adding more gigabytes fixes neither problem automatically.

Recarga Mágica needs enrolment and an exact CLP 10,000 recharge

Entel’s prepaid offer lists 50 GB, 700 national minutes and specified social-app benefits for 30 days, triggered by a CLP 10,000 recharge after joining Recarga Mágica. This is domestic Chile service, with international calls and roaming treated separately.

To select it in App Entel, open Prepago, choose your mobile number, then use ¿Qué te gustaría hacer? → Cambiar a Plan Recarga Mágica → Confirmar cambio de tarifa after reviewing the conditions. The operator’s Recarga Mágica instructions also provide a Mi Entel route through Mis servicios → Cambia tu tarifa → Recarga Mágica.

Once enrolled, recharge exactly CLP 10,000 to trigger that bundle. A smaller or larger recharge adds balance instead of automatically buying the same 50 GB package. For example, CLP 12,000 is CLP 2,000 more money, but it does not become a slightly more generous version of the advertised deal. The magic has surprisingly firm opinions about the number you type.

The social-app allowance also has limits. Entel excludes uses including voice and video calls, external links and certain location features, so a WhatsApp video call should not be budgeted as free simply because WhatsApp appears among the named apps. Treat the included 50 GB as a fixed allowance, with app exclusions and the 30-day expiry still relevant.

Why the 120-day registration window will not keep a phone working for 120 days

For a foreign-bought phone used with a Chilean company’s SIM, SUBTEL’s administrative-registration guidance gives foreign visitors 120 days from entry to file. It separately says an unregistered handset will be blocked 30 days after first use. SUBTEL’s citizen FAQ repeats those two periods.

An older foreign-visitor page still mentions a 60-day filing window. Neither 60 nor 120 is a promise of uninterrupted mobile service for that many days; for a 45-day stay using a local SIM, complete handset registration before the 30-day operating limit.

Use the authorised certifier links on the administrative-registration page, or request the process through the local operator supplying your SIM. For the document pack, SUBTEL’s published checklist calls for an identity-document image, evidence such as a recently stamped passport or proof of purchase, and a photograph or screenshot of the phone’s IMEI. Dial *#06# to display the IMEI for that screenshot. Prepare your passport, dated entry evidence and the overseas purchase receipt if you have it, then submit through the certifier’s stated document route.

The administrative page describes one phone registration per person per year as free and directs users towards certifiers that do not charge. That does not make every intermediary or subsequent registration free. Entel’s foreign-phone instructions also explain that registration does not guarantee every network band or emergency-alert function will work.

Phones used only on roaming or Wi-Fi are exempt under SUBTEL’s guidance. What matters is how the service connects, rather than whether you use a physical SIM or an eSIM. Don’t assume every product called a “travel eSIM” qualifies for that exemption.

A smaller data purchase for a shorter Chile visit

The SIM Shop Chile selection is data-only, without a Chilean number or ordinary calls and SMS.

Total dataValidityPrice
1 GB7 daysA$6.95
3 GB30 daysA$13.95
5 GB30 daysA$20.95
10 GB30 daysA$37.95
20 GB30 daysA$63.95

These allowances do not reset each day. The plans list WOM and 4G/5G, with validity starting on the first network connection. For a remote walking route in Patagonia or the Atacama, those labels cannot tell you where a phone will have signal; keep essential route information available offline rather than relying on the mobile plan throughout the walk.

For a 10-day trip with an assumed 2 GB data budget, the 3 GB/30-day option at A$13.95 covers the period and leaves 1 GB spare. The 1 GB/7-day option is short on both data and duration. The 3 GB purchase covers this app-based visit without buying a Chilean calling service or a 50 GB bundle you do not expect to use.

A 45-day stay changes the recommendation

For a 45-day stay requiring a Chilean number, Entel’s physical prepaid route is the relevant choice in this comparison, provided your phone accepts it and you complete both line activation and handset registration. Plan for one Recarga Mágica purchase covering the first 30 days, then another qualifying CLP 10,000 recharge when that bundle ends. The two advertised bundle purchases total CLP 20,000, before any charge for the SIM itself, and provide two separate allowance periods rather than one pooled 100 GB balance with a 60-day life.

Our largest listed Chile option still expires after 30 days, so buying 20 GB does not turn it into a 45-day service. Its same-area data-reload description is also insufficient to promise an expiry extension; a single 30-day purchase is not the complete solution for this stay.

Whichever route fits, save the first address and any essential travel details offline. Our Chile setup guide covers the phone settings for a SIM Shop purchase after arrival.
