Data-only means internet, without included ordinary calls or SMS
A data-only travel eSIM connects supported apps to the internet. It can handle maps, browsing, email, WhatsApp and other internet calling or messaging services. It doesn’t supply an ordinary local phone number or receive the bank SMS sent to your Australian number.
“Call the hotel” can mean two different things
A WhatsApp call to a hotel that uses WhatsApp can run over travel data. Dialling the hotel’s ordinary landline needs a separate voice service, such as your home carrier’s roaming or an internet calling service that explicitly supports that number and destination. Buying more data doesn’t add included carrier calls.

Your bank code still goes to the registered number
If the bank uses your Australian number, keeping that number reachable is a separate job. Confirm receiving-SMS eligibility and charges with the Australian carrier before flying. A data-line choice doesn’t redirect SMS to the travel eSIM.
Where an account supports an authenticator or another recovery method, arrange it through that service’s instructions at home. Don’t change bank contact details just because you bought travel data.
Give each line its own job
After landing, install on steady Wi-Fi and select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Keep automatic data switching off where available, and follow the email’s roaming instruction for that travel line. Keep Australian-line Data Roaming off unless deliberately using its roaming service.
That data setting doesn’t block ordinary call, voicemail or other carrier charges. If you don’t need the Australian number, switching that line off avoids relying on it. If you do need it, follow your carrier’s exact voice/SMS terms.
When a local SIM is a better fit
If you need a local number for ordinary calls or a service that specifically requires local SMS, buy an offer that explicitly includes those functions. Ask the seller for the number, call/SMS inclusions, registration requirements and expiry before paying. An eSIM icon or a large data allowance doesn’t answer those questions.
