Dominica eSIMs: extra data does not always mean extra islands

Dominica is separate from the Dominican Republic. Compare the exact plan’s island list: the Digicel 5 GB offer checked here names Montserrat, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, while the 10 GB offer omits them. For a Dominica-only visit, match general data and expiry; chat benefits do not include every activity inside an app.

Check the exact island before the data allowance

Before comparing a Dominica eSIM, check the destination name against your booking. Dominica and the Dominican Republic are different countries, and a Caribbean label does not automatically include either one. Even two plans sold under the same regional name can have different island lists.

That difference is visible in the two Digicel Travel SIM products checked here: the selected 5 GB plan names Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and Montserrat, while the selected 10 GB plan omits all three. Both name Dominica. Buying the larger allowance therefore changes more than the number of gigabytes, and it is worth checking the exact product before paying.

For a one-island visit, the amount and expiry may decide the purchase. Add Montserrat or another stop and the destination list becomes just as important. Local offers below were checked on 21 October 2026. We sell the country-only travel-data options included here; our prices and terms were checked on 25 October.

Decide whether you need ordinary calls before choosing data

The SIM Shop’s standard Dominica options are data-only, without an ordinary local number, voice minutes or SMS. The selected Digicel travel summaries likewise identify data, rather than establishing an ordinary calling allowance.

Flow’s prepaid page lists other local networks, Flow Caribbean, the USA, Canada and UK fixed lines for its stated off-network/international allocations. Australia is not named in that destination description. Do not choose the bundle to obtain included Australian calls on the strength of the word “international”; establish a suitable ordinary-voice tariff for the number you need, or use a separately verified home-carrier option.

For internet-based messages and app-to-app calls, match the general data allowance instead. A video call still needs general data even when text chat in the same app has a separate benefit.

Compare the two actual Digicel lists

Digicel’s Travel SIM 5GB shows 5 GB, thirty days and US$30. Its Travel SIM 10GB shows 10 GB, thirty days and US$40. Both summaries label the service as data.

Opening each product’s coverage list gives this useful comparison:

Actual stopSelected 5 GB productSelected 10 GB product
DominicaNamedNamed
Dominican RepublicNot listedNot listed
AnguillaNamedNot listed
British Virgin IslandsNamedNot listed
MontserratNamedNot listed

The 5 GB product displays twenty-two entries and the 10 GB product nineteen, but those totals also include the label “Caribbean” and the historic “Netherlands Antilles”. Use explicitly named current destinations for a purchase decision, rather than treating either total as a precise modern country count or interpreting an aggregate label to include a particular island.

For an illustrative route needing 4 GB in Dominica and 1 GB in Montserrat, the total is 5 GB. The smaller selected product matches both named stops and that quantity, with no data reserve. The larger selected product gives more data but does not list Montserrat, so it is not a complete replacement for that itinerary merely because it costs US$10 more.

That comparison establishes the destination and quantity fit, but it does not settle when the thirty days begin. Digicel’s generic “How our plans work” panel says validity can start on installation or arrival, depending on the provider, while the selected summaries do not resolve which applies. Before buying either offer in advance, get its actual start rule confirmed. The coverage difference is useful, but it does not tell you whether an eSIM installed weeks early will wait until arrival.

Country-only data can be the simpler purchase for one island

The SIM Shop’s Dominica choices are 1 GB/seven days at A$12.50, then 3, 5, 10 or 20 GB/thirty days at A$36.95, A$52.95, A$95.95 or A$160.95. Each is a total allowance, without a daily reset, and its service period starts at the first network connection. Current Dominica plans

For a six-day Dominica stay with a 4 GB budget, our 5 GB/thirty-day option at A$52.95 covers the visit with 1 GB spare and starts on the first network connection. That fits a data-only trip without needing a regional allowance. You still have 5 GB in total, whether you use six days or all thirty.

If the same traveller adds Montserrat, this country-only purchase no longer supplies the full route. Keep that second destination in a separate confirmed purchase or choose an actual regional product whose list names both stops. A plan’s suitability for Dominica does not establish suitability for the ferry journey or another island.

These prices are in AUD, while the selected Digicel prices are in USD. Compare the final amounts in the currency your card charges, including any applicable conversion costs, rather than reading a smaller foreign-currency number as an automatic saving.

Our plans list FLOW and 4G. Reception still depends on location and the handset, while hotspot availability depends on the network and device. The FLOW name identifies the listed network; it does not establish identical performance to Flow’s own retail service.

Flow’s chat benefit is narrower than general internet

Flow’s Dominica prepaid page separates ordinary data from SWIFT messaging, covering messaging functions within Snapchat, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Its WhatsApp row specifically excludes voice, video and file transfers.

If your plan for the evening is to send a large video home, make a WhatsApp call and load tomorrow’s map, do not budget those tasks as free chat. Those tasks need enough general data; the free-chat benefit won’t cover them. Text messaging within the stated benefit is a different activity from using everything an app can do.

The published FAQ describes fair-use limits, a move from the social allowance to remaining general data, and PAYGO charging after both have been exhausted. It also includes dated example messages from 2019 and 2021, so we would not use its sample quantities as a fresh issued-bundle quote. Choose the current plan on its confirmed general allowance and charging rules, without counting a renewal badge or repeated promotional picture as extra starting data.

Flow also has a separate Dominica eSIM information page. It establishes that an eSIM offering exists, but the reviewed pages do not establish a complete new-visitor purchase with a confirmed currency, issue cost and bundle total. Ask for those details together before counting a local Flow service as arranged. Its messaging and calling features may be useful, but they do not settle how a new visitor obtains the line or what the complete purchase costs.

Keep the expiry with the purchase details

Save the selected plan name, destination list, price currency, activation rule and expiry together. For a SIM Shop purchase, buy before departure and install after landing on working airport or hotel Wi-Fi, or another steady, trusted Wi-Fi connection, using the Dominica setup guide.

If you later reload our thirty-day option, its published support is for the same area within validity; it does not establish another month simply because the reload happens on day twenty-nine. Match the replacement or continuation’s actual expiry to the remaining holiday. That final date matters just as much as the island list that made the original plan suitable.
