Dublin to Britain with SailRail: how to make the whole journey work

For this Dublin-origin Irish Ferries purchase, take the reference to Check-In Desk No. 1 at Dublin Ferryport one hour before sailing to collect the travel ticket. Mainline rail is included; local buses and Underground are separate. Check a feasible Holyhead train and fallback rather than assuming the sailing guarantees a connection.

Make the combined ticket work from hotel to hotel

Irish Ferries SailRail combines the Dublin–Holyhead ferry and onward mainline train into one purchase. It can suit a trip to a British city when you would rather cross the Irish Sea than fly. To make it work from hotel to hotel, add the local transfers and leave time at Dublin’s Terminal 1 to collect the actual travel ticket.

This guide follows a Dublin-origin purchase through Irish Ferries, with collection at the departure port. Other retailers have different collection and reservation arrangements, so check the seller before choosing the fare.

Buy a ticket you can actually collect

If you are already holidaying in Ireland, choose Irish Ferries with Dublin collection. Transport for Wales says its SailRail tickets cannot be collected in Ireland; its station-machine collection requires a British station, your booking reference and the original payment card. A perfectly good fare becomes rather less convenient when the ticket is waiting on the other side of the sea. Transport for Wales ticket guidance

For Irish Ferries collection, take the booking reference to Check-In Desk No. 1 at Dublin Ferryport one hour before departure. Save the confirmation email for that collection, then keep the issued ticket handy for the journey, because the email itself isn’t the travel ticket. Irish Ferries SailRail FAQ

That hour matters when choosing your transfer. For a hypothetical 08:00 sailing, the desk target is 07:00. A bus arriving at 07:15 already misses that instruction by 15 minutes, before allowing for a queue. Choose an earlier arrival rather than treating the ferry departure time as your deadline at the terminal.

Aim for Terminal 1, not simply “Dublin Port”

Irish Ferries uses Terminal 1 on Terminal Road South. Dublin Port lists route 53 from Talbot Street as serving Terminal 1, which makes it a relevant public-transport option. A taxi should also be directed to that terminal, rather than an unspecific point somewhere in the port.

The Luas Red Line reaches The Point, at the port entrance. That is not the same destination as the Irish Ferries passenger terminal. Dublin Port’s advertised seven-minute walk from The Point is to its Substation and headquarters, not to your ferry check-in desk. If your map ends at The Point, your transfer planning is not finished. Dublin Port transport directions

The distinction is particularly useful with luggage. A pin labelled “port” can look reassuringly maritime while still leaving you with the wrong final stretch.

What the purchase covers, from hotel to hotel

Work from the Dublin accommodation to the final British address. The ferry-and-rail ticket covers the middle of these six stages; collection and the local journeys still need time in the day.

StageWhat to arrange
Dublin accommodation to Terminal 1Separate local transport; arrive for the ticket-collection instruction
Desk No. 1Exchange the booking reference for the travel ticket
Dublin to HolyheadThe ferry crossing in your SailRail booking
Holyhead terminal to railwayFollow the station signs within the shared terminal building
Holyhead to the named British mainline destinationThe rail portion of the SailRail ticket
British station to the final addressSeparate local transport, including any Underground or local bus journey

Irish Ferries includes mainline rail, not local UK buses or the Underground. For example, arriving at London Euston does not include the Tube journey to a hotel elsewhere in London. Keep that final fare separate when comparing the journey with flying. Irish Ferries ticket conditions

Treat Holyhead as a connection, not a promise

Having the railway and ferry terminal in the same building is helpful, but the ship’s arrival time is not the moment you are standing on the platform. Irish Ferries expressly warns that train operators do not treat these as connecting services and tells passengers to allow for delays. Irish Ferries travel guidance

Build the trip around an onward train with a later same-day fallback, rather than a plan that works only if you catch the final departure. Enter Holyhead and your actual destination in the National Rail journey planner for your travel date before buying. This is a date-specific input: a weekday connection copied from somebody’s trip report does not settle a Sunday journey.

For an overnight wait, there is another definite limitation. Irish Ferries’ guidance checked on 21 October 2026 lists the Holyhead terminal as closed from 03:00 to 05:45. Do not plan to use it as an all-night waiting room. Choose a different sailing or arrange accommodation if your itinerary leaves you stranded across those hours. Current terminal notice

A flexible journey is not a sightseeing pass

Irish Ferries describes its rail portion as unreserved second class, with no first-class upgrade. If first-class rail is part of the holiday you want, buy separate ferry and first-class train tickets instead. Paying for a nicer ferry lounge doesn’t upgrade your train ticket. Irish Ferries rail-class rules

The SailRail terms also exclude a break of journey. A planned sightseeing stay along the rail route therefore needs a different ticket arrangement; do not buy a through ticket to London and assume it doubles as a stopover tour of Wales.

Bring your passport, even though the crossing feels local

Since 28 September 2026, Irish Ferries requires a valid passport or Irish passport card on Republic of Ireland–Britain services. A driving licence is no longer an accepted substitute. Australian visitors should bring their passport to the port. Irish Ferries identification update

Under UK guidance checked on 21 October 2026, an Australian holiday visitor without an exemption normally also needs a UK ETA. The official service listed a £20 fee on that date. Travelling via Ireland does not itself remove that requirement. British or Irish citizens and people with existing UK immigration permission have different rules; the separate exemption for eligible people who live in Ireland is not an exemption for tourists spending a few nights there. Save the collection reference, Terminal 1 address and onward rail options offline before leaving the Dublin accommodation. For directions to the port and from the British station, our Ireland mobile-data guide and UK eSIM comparison help you choose data for each side. Check both countries in any multi-country plan. The phone can help with those local legs; leave the collection hour intact so you also have the ticket for the journey between them.
