Edinburgh Castle standard or flexi ticket: is the extra freedom worth paying for?

Choose standard Edinburgh Castle admission when a specific date and time fit. Flexi provides one entry during seven days starting on the selected date. At the dated prices, two adults pay £47 standard or £76 flexi; a family of two adults and a ten-year-old pays £58.50 or £98.50.

Decide whether castle flexibility helps your trip

Holiday flexibility sounds appealing until you realise you have only one free morning. If your train leaves Edinburgh the next day and every other afternoon is spoken for, a seven-day castle ticket cannot create more room in the trip. For someone staying all week with several genuinely open days, however, the ability to choose later may be worth buying.

Edinburgh Castle’s standard ticket is for a specific date and time. Its flexi ticket gives one entry during a seven-day period, without booking a separate timeslot. Before comparing prices, count how many different occasions you could actually use. Historic Environment Scotland sets out the two options on its castle page.

Price the freedom for everyone who is going

These were the published online prices on 21 October 2026, in pounds sterling. The premium column is the extra cost of choosing flexi rather than standard admission. Official Edinburgh Castle tickets

VisitorStandard onlineFlexiExtra for flexi
Adult, aged 16–64£23.50£38£14.50
Eligible concession£19£30.50£11.50
Child, aged 7–15£11.50£22.50£11

The concession covers people aged 65 or over, or unemployed visitors with proof; being a student does not itself qualify. Children under 16 need an accompanying adult.

For two adults with one fixed Edinburgh sightseeing day, standard admission totals £47, compared with £76 for flexi. The extra £29 buys a choice of when to enter, rather than more things to see. If you can commit to the available standard slot, there may be little practical value in paying it.

For two adults and a ten-year-old with an unsettled week, standard tickets total £58.50 and flexi tickets £98.50, so keeping the choice of day open costs £40. That can be a useful purchase if you have several free days or are still arranging plans with relatives; with only one available afternoon, there is much less flexibility to buy.

Book through the castle’s official ticket page above. Choose standard and an available date/time for a fixed visit, or flexi and the first usable date for a seven-day window. The calculations use the prices displayed on 21 October 2026; they do not reserve a slot.

Count the first day as part of the seven

The selected start date begins the validity period. As an illustration, a start date of 20 October gives a window of 20–26 October inclusive. It does not mean 21–27 October, and arriving on the 27th would put you outside that example’s window.

Write the first and last usable dates beside your accommodation dates before purchasing. Then cross out any day when you will be elsewhere or cannot realistically visit. This takes the decision beyond the generous-looking number on the ticket: a seven-day ticket might leave your particular itinerary with two useful choices, or only one.

Flexi also means one admission, rather than permission to come back every day. You can develop a perfectly respectable interest in castles without buying yourself a daily attendance record. The advantage is choosing the visit, not repeating it throughout the week.

From 1 October to 23 December, the castle opens at 9.30 am, admits its last visitors at 4 pm and closes at 5 pm. The castle recommends at least two hours for its main attractions, so a 3 pm arrival is a more useful October option than arriving at the final entry cutoff. From April to September, last entry moves to 5 pm and closing to 6 pm. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are closed. These published opening hours help you cross out dates that looked possible on paper.

Already have a pass or membership?

If you already hold an Explorer Pass or Historic Scotland membership, reserve your castle entry online using your pass or membership and bring the pass or membership proof. Do not buy an extra standard or flexi ticket simply to secure a time. The castle asks pass holders to reserve entry to guarantee it, unlike flexi’s no-separate-timeslot arrangement. Official admission options

For a castle-only visit without either a pass or membership, the standard-versus-flexi comparison above gives you the relevant price decision. Neither option includes a guided walking tour; the £4 audio option below provides a separately priced way to hear more about what you’re seeing.

Make the phone preparation useful, then put it away

The castle’s separately priced £4 audio guide can be used on your own phone or a hired device. If you choose the download, the castle recommends getting it before travelling because connectivity on site varies. Bring headphones and a charged phone; the download is a better preparation task than hoping to sort everything out beside the entrance.

Save your castle confirmation alongside the downloaded audio. If you need mobile data for reservations and messages elsewhere on the holiday, our UK eSIM range is a separate trip-planning choice. Keep the audio available offline for the visit itself.

Before buying, compare the actual extra cost with the dates you have left uncrossed on your itinerary. Choose standard when a particular visit fits; choose flexi when keeping several real options open is worth the premium. Once that is settled, the more interesting planning can begin: what you want to understand when you get inside.
