An Ekoin temple stay in Koyasan: leave time to actually be there

If meditation matters, aim for Ekoin by about 4 pm: this is a suggested buffer before the 4.30 pm session, not the formal check-in deadline. Dinner is at 5.30 pm. The Okunoin night tour is separate and uses the operator’s TAIRA reception and Tour Pass instructions. Room Wi-Fi is already supplied.

Leave time for the Ekoin stay itself

If meditation is one of the reasons you are booking Ekoin, aim to reach the temple by 4 pm. Check-in begins at 2 pm, the ajikan session starts at 4.30 pm and dinner is served at 5.30 pm. A late-afternoon arrival that would be perfectly ordinary at a city hotel can quietly remove much of the first evening you came for.

The 4 pm target is our suggested buffer, not the temple’s formal check-in deadline. It gives you time to put down your bags and find the meditation hall without turning the pursuit of calm into another activity you are running late for.

Ekoin’s appeal lies in the combination: instruction in a Buddhist meditation practice, Buddhist vegetarian meals, called shojin ryori, time in the temple and the opportunity to attend the following morning’s services. The Okunoin night tour can add another perspective, but it is a separate booking with a separate operator. Your room reservation does not include it.

Give the stay an afternoon and a morning

A shukubo is temple accommodation. Japan’s tourism organisation describes a tradition that opened from lodging travelling monks to welcoming other visitors, while noting that rooms, meals and practices vary between properties. At Ekoin, you are welcome regardless of religion or denomination, and English-speaking staff are available. You do not need to arrive pretending to be an expert. JNTO’s introduction to temple stays

What makes the overnight stay worthwhile is the chance to join activities at different points in the temple’s day. The afternoon ajikan session is a meditation practice from Esoteric Buddhism, with instruction from monks in the Ajikan Dojo. It lasts about forty minutes and is free for overnight guests. Preschool-age children cannot participate, so a family with a preschooler should not plan on everyone attending together.

The next morning, the religious service takes place at 7 am in the main hall and is reserved for overnight guests. The Goma fire ritual follows at 7.30 am in the Bishamondo. Overnight guests can attend that ritual without a reservation or participation fee; non-staying visitors use a separate advance application. Use Ekoin’s own programme for this stay; other temples have their own arrangements. Ekoin’s experiences

You can also copy the Heart Sutra in your room at your own pace. Tell the temple at check-in that you would like to do this. Dedicating the copied sutra at Ekoin carries no charge; dedication at Okunoin has a published ¥1,000 donation. It is a quieter, flexible activity to leave between the scheduled parts of the stay, rather than another appointment to squeeze into the afternoon.

The timetable that should shape your arrival

The following combines Ekoin’s current published times with the separate night-tour operator’s instructions, checked on 21 October 2026.

Time What to plan around
From 2 pm Ekoin check-in opens
By about 4 pm Our recommended arrival target if you want to settle in before meditation
4.30 pm Ajikan begins and lasts approximately forty minutes
5.30 pm Dinner is served
6.30 pm to 7 pm Evening reception window at TAIRA for the separately booked Okunoin tour; the operator recommends arriving by 6.55 pm
Around 7 pm to 7.15 pm Tour departure, using the exact meeting time and nearby location printed on your Tour Pass
Around 8.20 pm Tour finishes at Okunoin’s inner sanctuary; this is not your arrival time back at Ekoin
7 am next morning Religious service in Ekoin’s main hall
7.30 am Goma fire ritual at the Bishamondo
10 am Ekoin checkout

An arrival at 5 pm is already half an hour after meditation begins. If dinner matters, do not treat the 7 pm last check-in time as a 7 pm dinner sitting. Ekoin specifically requires notice for arrivals after the 5.30 pm dinner time; its FAQ also directs anyone expecting to arrive after 7 pm to contact the temple. Neither instruction promises a replacement meditation session or a late meal. For a stay built around these experiences, choose a travel day that gets you there earlier. Ekoin lodging information

Luggage storage is available before and after check-in. That gives you a useful alternative to dragging bags through the afternoon: leave them with the temple, explore, then return with enough time to settle in.

Book the room for the facilities you actually want

“Temple stay” does not mean every room has a floor futon and a shared bathroom. Ekoin has several room categories, and the differences are substantial.

Its General Japanese-Style Room accommodates one to four people and has no en suite bath or toilet; guests use the shared facilities. The Superior Japanese-Style Room accommodates one to three and includes a bath and toilet. If you want a bedroom with Western-style bedding as well as your own bath and toilet, the Ruri Superior Japanese-Western Room is a named option, with capacity for two to three guests. It is not a solo room according to that published capacity. Ekoin’s room descriptions

Choose the named room type for the bed and bathroom you actually want, rather than assuming every room in the photographs belongs to the lowest-priced reservation. “Japanese-style room” leaves both details open, so use the room’s specific bed and bathroom description to settle them before booking.

Ekoin also states that it has no curfew, accepts major cards including Visa, Mastercard and American Express, and provides free Wi-Fi in all rooms. Generic advice about cash-only temples or universal evening lock-ups should not override this property’s own information.

Let the meal be part of the visit

Ekoin describes its shojin ryori through combinations of cooking methods, flavours and colours, with a banquet-style tradition connected to ceremonies. Its breakfast and dinner policy excludes meat, fish, eggs, dairy, onion and garlic. The point is to experience the meal being prepared here, rather than arrive expecting a standard hotel menu with one vegetarian substitution.

Breakfast and dinner are served in the guest room, with groups of four or more using a separate room. Those arrangements help explain why the fixed dinner time matters: the meal is part of an organised temple stay, not a restaurant service that runs throughout the evening. Ekoin’s cuisine and allergy policy

Vegetarian ingredients do not make the kitchen free of allergens. Soy sauce and miso are widely used, and Ekoin says a soy-free meal would be quite simple. Its policy offers a gluten-free menu for wheat allergy or coeliac disease, but also states that there is only one kitchen and no separate preparation area for allergy requests. Severe allergies may not be accommodated.

The temple asks you to disclose an allergy at least one week before arrival. Name the ingredient concerned so it can determine whether it can provide the meal. Do this before relying on the meal as part of your booking. A vegetarian label alone is not enough to make that personal decision, and a late request may be refused. The temple distinguishes allergies from ordinary food preferences and does not promise substitutions for preferences.

The night tour now has its own reception stop

AWESOME TOURS’ current English booking page directs participants to its counter inside TAIRA Cafe & Souvenir Shop, 734 Koyasan. Go there to collect the Tour Pass that specifies your meeting time and nearby meeting location. This is the instruction to follow even though Ekoin’s lodging FAQ still describes Ekoin as the meeting place.

You can complete tour reception between 1 pm and 5 pm and go straight to the assigned evening meeting point, which leaves the time after dinner less rushed. Otherwise, use the 6.30–7 pm reception window and arrange your own way there, since accommodation pickup isn’t provided. AWESOME TOURS’ current English tour instructions

The tour explores Koyasan’s history, tombs, legends and Shingon Buddhist teachings with a resident guide. Its currently published route is approximately 3 km on dark stone paths and stairs. Participants must be at least six and able to walk the route without assistance; wheelchairs and strollers cannot join. Walking shoes are mandatory, and the operator does not permit yukata on the tour. Wear clothing that covers your legs, chest and shoulders, rather than heading out in whatever you planned to wear around the temple bath.

At the 21 October check, the online English product started from ¥6,000, with the selected date’s amount shown at payment. That is a separate expense from the room. The tour ends at the inner sanctuary, after which you can walk back or use the operator’s optional return-bus arrangement without a bus fare. Do not count the approximately 8.20 pm finish as the moment you are back in your room.

Save both confirmations, the TAIRA address and the meeting instructions offline before the day. Our Japan eSIM guide can help with data for the journey and booking messages; Ekoin already provides room Wi-Fi, so you do not need to buy an eSIM just to be connected inside the property.

Above all, resist giving your temple stay only the hours left over after everything else. Arriving earlier is what leaves room for instruction, dinner and a little unscheduled time, before the morning service gives the next day a different beginning.
