Start with how you’ll keep in touch
Maps, a message to your accommodation and a video call home can all run over mobile data. If that covers what you need in El Salvador, a data-only travel eSIM is one way to arrange the connection before you fly. If you also need a Salvadoran number for ordinary calls or SMS, you’ll need to arrange a local line.
Whichever route you take, leave room in your data budget for the calls you’ll make through apps. A WhatsApp benefit can cover chat while leaving video calls to use the data you’ve paid for, so it helps to separate the two before comparing packages.
Allow for the video calls too
Tigo’s Todo Incluido help page excludes WhatsApp voice and video calls from its social-app benefit. Facebook Messenger and Instagram calls and video calls are excluded too. If you’ll be showing someone the view each evening, count those calls in the ordinary data you buy.
Your family may enjoy the live tour, but the WhatsApp logo has not offered to sponsor the cinematography…
For example, suppose you’ve allowed 2GB for maps and other everyday use over eight days, plus 2GB for video calls. That makes a 4GB budget. It’s an assumed trip budget, so the point is to include both jobs rather than treat the calls as free because the app appears on the package.
For your own trip, choose El Salvador, enter your dates and select your phone use and any connection sharing in our trip planner. It gives you an estimated budget and plan suggestions, with some planning headroom already included. Use that result to compare the amount of data and the days you need.
Choosing travel data for that trip
For the eight-day, 4GB example, our 5GB/30-day El Salvador eSIM at A$30.95 covers the trip with 1GB spare. Our smaller option is useful for a lighter, shorter visit:
| Total data | Validity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1GB | 7 days | A$6.25 |
| 5GB | 30 days | A$30.95 |
If your whole seven-day trip fits within 1GB, the A$6.25 plan is the smaller purchase. It won’t cover the example above: it is 3GB short and finishes a day too soon. Moving some calls onto hotel Wi-Fi may reduce the data you need, but it won’t extend a seven-day plan.
Both allowances are for the whole plan, with no daily reset. Their service days begin at the first supported-network connection, and you have 180 days from purchase to start. Both list Claro and Movistar with 3G/4G service; sharing data through a hotspot depends on your phone and the network.
These are data-only plans, so app messages and calls use that allowance, while an ordinary local number, telephone calls and SMS are not included. If those telephone services are part of your trip, the local-line route below is the one to investigate.
If you want a local number
Digicel’s eSIM registration terms accept a valid passport and require the customer to be an adult. You’ll need to register your details, confirm they’re correct and recharge or activate a package.
Choose the actual SIM format before counting on a particular package. The US$2.25 weekly new-customer checkout offers a physical SIM and says that package is unavailable as an eSIM. Its next screen requests contact details for a follow-up instead of taking an online payment. For a weekly eSIM, use the store locator on the package page and ask which package can be issued with passport registration, including the full SIM or issue cost.
Tigo’s published new-line eSIM process asks for a valid DUI, the Salvadoran identity document. A passport-only visitor should ask a Tigo store or its listed support channel about visitor registration, rather than try to complete that DUI form. The welcome promotion on that page ended in April 2023, and its displayed prepaid promotion covers 1–31 October 2026; neither establishes a promotional price for a November trip.
Then compare the local packages
These selected Digicel packages were displayed on 31 October 2026. Prices include tax and are in US dollars. They are package prices, so ask for the complete cost of your new visitor line before comparing them with a travel eSIM.
| Package | General data | Validity | Price | Listed minutes to other networks, USA and Canada |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 4GB | 7 days | US$2.25 | 20 |
| Selected eight-day | 8GB | 8 days | US$4 | 50 |
| Selected monthly | 10GB | 30 days | US$11 | 100 |
Returning to the same eight-day, 4GB trip, the 8GB/eight-day package covers the quantity and duration with 4GB spare, provided you can arrange the local line. The weekly 4GB package has enough data but ends a day too soon. Its WhatsApp benefit specifically names chat, so don’t assume it pays for video calls.
The listed telephone destinations do not name Australia, and ordinary-call minutes do not pay for WhatsApp calls. Compare the complete local-line cost and travel-eSIM cost in the same currency, with those differences kept alongside the price.
Getting connected after landing
For a SIM Shop plan, use our compatibility checker for your exact phone and unlock status, buy before departure and save the setup email. After landing, install on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection using our installation guide. Keep data roaming off on your Australian line, then follow the issued settings for the travel eSIM.
