Choose Ethiopia visitor data and calling separately
Ethio telecom sells both unlimited-data visitor packages and visitor bundles with data, ordinary calls, SMS and airtime, with different prices and benefits in each range. A seven-day visitor who only wants app data does not have to buy the weekly combination bundle simply because it is the first card on the page.
Choose the SIM format separately: the visitor page includes a SIM in its package price, while the operator’s general eSIM page lists an ETB85 issue charge. The two published pages do not settle whether that charge is waived for a visitor package, so a free physical SIM should not be presented as a guaranteed free eSIM.
The local offer details below were checked on 21 October 2026. We do not have a confirmed SIM Shop Ethiopia plan to recommend. If your trip continues elsewhere, check each onward country in our destination directory separately; a regional or global label alone does not establish Ethiopian coverage.
First choose between data and a combination bundle
Ethio telecom’s International Visitors Plan page publishes the following combination bundles. The operator lists matching numerical prices in USD or EUR; these are its advertised purchase currencies, rather than an exchange-rate conversion supplied by us.
| Combination bundle | Price | Data | Ordinary local calling headline | SMS headline | International minutes | Included airtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly, seven days | US$10 or €10 | 30 GB | 300 all-network minutes | 300 all-network SMS | None listed | ETB100 |
| Biweekly, fifteen days | US$20 or €20 | 60 GB | 300 all-network minutes | 300 all-network SMS | 30 | ETB300 |
| Monthly, thirty days | US$40 or €40 | Unlimited | Unlimited all-network calls | Unlimited all-network SMS | 90 | ETB500 |
The same page has a separate Unlimited Data Package section:
| Unlimited-data package | Price |
|---|---|
| Seven days | US$5 or €5 |
| Fifteen days | US$10 or €10 |
| Thirty days | US$15 or €15 |
The lower-priced data packages do not include the combination bundle’s listed calls, SMS and airtime. For example, the fifteen-day data package costs half as much as the fifteen-day combination bundle because they supply different services.
The published prices include tax. The visitor terms say the SIM price is included for a new sale and limit the plans to new or existing prepaid SIMs. That included-SIM statement is distinct from the general eSIM charge discussed below.
Seven days of app data: choose the separate data package
For a seven-day visit needing internet-based messages, maps and app calls, with no requirement for included ordinary calls or SMS, choose the seven-day unlimited-data package at US$5 or €5 among these offers. The weekly combination bundle costs US$10 or €10 and adds its stated voice, SMS and airtime benefits; those are useful only if they serve your needs.
The difference is US$5 when comparing the USD prices, or €5 when comparing the EUR prices. It is not a saving calculated across currencies, and it does not establish a complete eSIM issue total.
Ethio telecom describes its unlimited data as having no fair-use policy, meaning it doesn’t list a heavy-use limit under that policy. That doesn’t tell you how fast your connection will be. If you need to share it with a laptop, ask the service centre whether that’s allowed and whether a separate sharing limit applies; the visitor page doesn’t answer either question.
If ordinary calls are the reason you need service, the data package alone is not our recommendation. Internet calls and calls to a normal telephone number are different benefits, even when both begin with tapping a contact’s name.
The all-network minute headline needs a unit check
Ethio telecom’s terms publish a voice conversion of one unit per second on-network and two units per second off-network. Consequently, the 300-minute headline is not an equal amount of conversation time on every local network.
For a simple illustration, a ten-minute off-network call consumes the equivalent of twenty minutes of that pool. If the entire allowance is used for ordinary on-network calls, the nominal 300 minutes corresponds to 300 minutes of conversation; used entirely off-network at the published double rate, it corresponds to 150 minutes. Mixed calling uses a mixture of those rates.
Keep that calculation separate from the thirty international minutes in the biweekly bundle. It also does not turn a WhatsApp call into an ordinary voice-pool deduction: app calls use an internet connection.
That small piece of arithmetic is more useful than discovering halfway through a long catch-up that “all-network” describes the destinations, rather than identical consumption on each one.
Fifteen days with ordinary calls: choose the combination bundle
For a fifteen-day visit with a 45 GB data requirement and a need for included local calls, the biweekly combination bundle at US$20 or €20 supplies 60 GB and the stated local voice pool. It leaves 15 GB beyond that illustrative data requirement, while the seven-day bundle ends too early for the whole stay.
The biweekly bundle also includes thirty international minutes. Australia appears in the operator’s international destination list, so that is a relevant benefit when ordinary calls home matter. Premium and satellite numbers are excluded from the package treatment and charged at the prevailing pay-as-you-go rate; “Australia included” is not permission to treat every special number as an ordinary destination.
For a thirty-day need, compare the monthly combination bundle with the monthly unlimited-data package on those same service requirements. The former’s US$40 or €40 includes its ordinary calling, SMS, international minutes and airtime; the latter’s US$15 or €15 is the separate unlimited-data offer. Do not combine the lower data price with the larger bundle’s benefits to create a plan the operator does not sell.
Does getting an eSIM cost extra?
Ethio telecom’s eSIM page lists ETB85 for both new eSIM activation and replacement, and directs customers to its service centres to subscribe. It does not establish that a visitor can complete a new eSIM purchase online.
The visitor page, meanwhile, says a SIM is included for new sales. Neither page explicitly reconciles that benefit with the ETB85 eSIM charge. For a phone with a SIM slot, the included physical SIM avoids relying on an unconfirmed eSIM fee waiver. For the digital format, ask the service centre whether ETB85 is payable in addition to the visitor package.
For an eSIM-only phone, confirm that you can get the eSIM and ask for the complete price before paying. Ask for the quote in one currency so you can compare the package and issue charge without mixing ETB and USD.
Start the service clock when you actually need it
The visitor terms start validity from subscription, rather than the end of a calendar week or month. A thirty-day package is a thirty-day service period, not “until the last day of this month”. Purchasing or starting service early can therefore use time intended for the visit.
The packages do not work for roaming outside Ethio telecom’s home network. A connection in Ethiopia does not supply an onward country’s service. Recharging airtime may extend the SIM’s life under the operator’s separate rules, but that is not a stated extension of the package’s data validity.
Use the operator’s service-centre process for the local purchase and registration, with an unlocked phone that supports the chosen SIM format. Keep the selected package, subscription date and expiry with the receipt, and save essential bookings and addresses offline. The useful choice is the one whose data, ordinary calling benefits and service period match the visit, with the SIM format priced honestly alongside it.
