French Polynesia eSIM or local SIM: data, calling credit and the islands

Vini’s Travel Card explicitly includes Australia in its eligible calling area. Compare its shared calling credit and larger data offers with a smaller data-only travel eSIM; Vodafone’s advertised international-minute example does not name Australia.

Start with the person you need to ring

If calling an ordinary Australian number is part of your Tahiti holiday, start there. A data-only eSIM and a local SIM with calling credit are different purchases, even when both will get your messaging app online. In French Polynesia, where a small travel-data allowance can cost a substantial amount, it pays to compare the local visitor offers properly.

Vini’s Travel Card includes a calling bonus that names Australia among its destinations. Vodafone’s local TravelSIM provides a generous data allowance too, although its advertised international-minute example doesn’t name Australia. Our French Polynesia eSIM serves the smaller, data-only requirement, with prices in Australian dollars. It deserves consideration for that job, rather than an automatic recommendation for every visitor.

The selected offers below were checked on 25 October 2026. XPF means CFP francs; A$ means Australian dollars. We haven’t converted the local prices into a supposed final card-payment total.

Read the calling bonus as credit you can spend

The Vini Travel Card comes as a physical SIM or visitor eSIM. Its prices include the stated 13% tax.

Vini offerPriceInitial dataCalling or texting bonus
Travel Card 20 GBXPF4,00020 GBUp to 30 eligible minutes or 87 local texts
Travel Card 40 GBXPF8,00040 GBUp to 60 eligible minutes or 174 local texts

The initial credit lasts 30 days. The bonus is shared credit, so using it for calls reduces what remains for other chargeable uses. It isn’t 30 minutes followed by another 87 texts. Australia is in Vini’s named Premium Area, alongside metropolitan France, the United States, Canada and New Zealand.

For data and a few ordinary calls home, Vini’s 20GB option is a useful starting point, provided you keep track of the shared calling/texting bonus rather than treating every advertised maximum as another allowance to spend.

Vodafone’s TravelSIM costs XPF3,800, with 20 GB, unlimited local SMS and call credit described as 30 local minutes or up to 18 international minutes. Its initial credit also lasts 30 days. China, France, Japan and the United States are named in the international example; Australia isn’t. Confirm the Australian calling entitlement directly before buying it for that purpose. This doesn’t establish that Australian calls are impossible, only that those headline minutes aren’t a documented answer to the requirement.

When a smaller travel-data purchase fits

If all your contacts use internet messaging and most larger downloads happen on accommodation Wi-Fi, a small data allowance may be enough. Our French Polynesia eSIM is data-only, with no ordinary local number, voice minutes or SMS.

SIM Shop total dataValidityPrice
1 GB7 daysA$39.95
3 GB30 daysA$94.95
5 GB30 daysA$136.95

For six days with a stated requirement of no more than 1 GB, the A$39.95 plan fits. Make the same low-data visit ten days and that option ends too soon. The smallest plan in our range that reaches the end is then 3 GB for A$94.95.

At that point, compare the entire purchase with Vini’s 20 GB offer. You may prefer buying a defined data plan in Australian dollars before leaving; you may prefer the local offer’s much larger allowance and calling credit. A smaller number of gigabytes isn’t automatically the smaller or better purchase once validity is included.

For three weeks needing an estimated 4 GB, our 5 GB plan leaves 1 GB above the estimate and costs A$42 more than the 3 GB plan. Vini’s 20 GB offer is the identified larger-data alternative, especially when calls home also matter. These are calculations using a stated budget, rather than a prediction of how much data your holiday will use.

Check Vini’s exact handset list before paying

Vini’s visitor eSIM page says a phone must appear on its supported list. General eSIM capability and an unlocked handset aren’t enough to establish eligibility for that particular offer. Check the exact model; if it isn’t listed, consider the physical Travel Card with a suitable phone instead.

The online route supplies a QR by email after payment. Vini says the prepaid validity begins with the first call, SMS or internet use, and the mobile service operates after arrival in French Polynesia. We haven’t completed its purchase or tested a handset connection.

For a card bought through a Vini shop or reseller, the separate digital identification instructions describe activating the card and completing the customer profile within 30 days. Use the activation SMS link, identification site or pack QR. An unfinished profile can lead to deactivation; the registration deadline isn’t another description of the data expiry.

Thirty days of credit and the island itinerary are separate checks

Vini describes the line as reachable for three months after activation, while Vodafone gives a 90-day line lifetime after first use, with top-ups. Those longer line periods don’t extend the initial credit beyond thirty days, so keep the allowance expiry beside the dates you’ll use it.

Match the network’s service area to the actual stops as well. Vodafone’s tourist page names Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Huahine. Our plans list Vini as the network, without establishing reception at a particular motu, bungalow or on a boat passage. Save transfer details and booking references while you have a working connection.

If you choose our eSIM, buy before departure and save the email, then install after landing on working airport, hotel or other steady trusted Wi-Fi. The listed validity starts on first network connection; follow the issued settings for your phone and keep Australian-line data roaming off.

For a small data requirement, compare our fixed allowance against the cost and process of the local offers. For a larger allowance or ordinary calls to Australia, give Vini a proper look. The useful choice is the service you’ll actually use between the Wi-Fi connections, including the person you want to ring at the other end.
