Haramain trains for Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah Airport: keep the whole journey together

Choose Haramain rail when the station transfers and luggage rules fit the whole journey. Keep essential bags with you on the airport leg, and arrange each station-to-hotel transfer separately from the train ticket.

Keep the whole Haramain passenger and bag journey together

The Haramain train can make the intercity part of a Makkah and Madinah visit straightforward, particularly when your flight uses Jeddah Airport’s Terminal 1. The part that deserves more attention is what happens at either end: getting from a station to your hotel, carrying the luggage you brought from Australia, and reaching the departure airport with those same bags.

Choose rail when the bags and station transfers fit the whole itinerary. Keep essential luggage with you on the flight-bound leg, rather than relying on a delivery without a promised arrival time. You can use trains between the cities and a different mode for an awkward airport leg.

This guide follows an illustrative two-adult trip from Jeddah Airport to Makkah, then Madinah, then back to Jeddah Airport. Operator information was checked on 21 October 2026. The example is a planning model, not an available package or a set of reserved trains.

Start with the correct airport station

Haramain lists Airport – Jeddah separately from Al-Sulimaniyah – Jeddah. For a flight connection at King Abdulaziz International Airport, select the airport station. A city name in the ticket search is not a substitute for the right building.

The airport railway station is integrated with the terminal complex, and the Saudi Pilgrim Experience Program specifically identifies its direct connection to Terminal 1. That is the useful air-to-rail pairing. A flight using another terminal adds a terminal transfer, so do not apply the Terminal 1 walking connection to it. Use the terminal named on your actual airline itinerary as the starting point. Haramain airport station; Pilgrim Experience Program

At the other end, Makkah station is in Ar Rusayfah, which Haramain places 3.5 km from Masjid Al-Haram. That distance describes the station’s location; it does not make the train a hotel-door service. Madinah station is in Al Hadra, so your Madinah hotel also needs its own arrival and departure transfer.

Choose the hotel’s actual vehicle entrance as the destination for those rides. This is especially useful when several members of the party have the same hotel name saved but different map pins. Getting everyone to the same door is a modest ambition, but a worthwhile one after a long flight.

Count the transfers once, across the entire trip

For our two adults, assume both flights use Terminal 1 and each person keeps one qualifying suitcase and one small hand item throughout. Their transport plan looks like this:

Part of the illustrative tripPassenger transportWhere the two suitcases go
Jeddah Terminal 1 to Makkah hotelAirport-station train to Makkah, then one station-to-hotel vehicleWith the passengers on the train and in the vehicle
Makkah hotel to Madinah hotelHotel-to-station vehicle, train to Madinah, then station-to-hotel vehicleWith the passengers on all three segments
Madinah hotel to Jeddah Terminal 1Hotel-to-station vehicle, then train to Airport – JeddahWith the passengers through to airline baggage handover

Across the whole itinerary, that is six passenger train tickets and four hotel-to-station or station-to-hotel vehicle journeys. It is not six taxis, and it is not three train fares for the couple. The same two suitcases also need to fit each vehicle; luggage capacity is part of the transfer purchase.

This gives a complete basket for comparing transport prices: six rail tickets, four vehicle journeys and any applicable additional terminal transfer. Use the actual party total for each vehicle, rather than automatically multiplying a whole-car price by two. Conversely, a per-person shuttle price needs both travellers included.

There is no fixed fare quoted here because no travel dates, trains or hotel addresses have been selected. The useful decision is already clear: a low fare on one rail segment cannot establish the cheapest whole journey. A direct vehicle for a particular leg replaces the train tickets and the station transfer on that leg, which is the comparison to make when you reach the purchase screen.

A suitcase can pass the airline test and fail the train test

Haramain permits one large bag per passenger, up to 25 kg and 65 × 55 × 35 cm, plus one small hand item such as a backpack or laptop bag. Luggage is screened before access to the train. These are Haramain’s limits, not the separate baggage rules for SAR’s North trains. Haramain baggage policy

For the two-adult plan above, suppose each packed case measures 63 × 45 × 28 cm and weighs 20 kg. Both fit the stated size and weight limits individually. Now replace one case with a 75 × 50 × 30 cm case weighing 20 kg. Its low weight does not fix its oversized longest dimension.

Choose a smaller case before travelling if you want to retain the all-rail plan. The smaller case must satisfy all three dimensions as well as the weight limit. Do not buy the train ticket on the assumption that an unspecified excess-baggage payment will make an oversized case acceptable: the published rules don’t say you can pay to bring an oversized case.

Luggage delivery solves a different problem

SPL’s Haramain service is designed for pilgrims travelling between Makkah and Madinah. It offers luggage handling through its railway-station offices, with residence collection and destination-station or residence delivery options. That can separate a city transfer from carrying a large case around holy sites.

It does not, on the reviewed service page, publish a delivery deadline that makes a bag ready for a particular outbound flight. Consequently, the completed plan above keeps both suitcases with the travellers on the Madinah-to-airport leg. Do not replace that arrangement with “send the bags ahead” unless you have bought a service with a delivery commitment that actually covers your requirement.

If luggage has already been sent separately, retrieve it before starting the flight-bound journey. A parcel-tracking update and possession of the suitcase are different milestones. For a visit with intervening hotel nights, separately shipped luggage may still be useful, but the airport plan should start from the bags being back with you, not from the train arriving on time.

Work from the gate closure, not just the departure time

Haramain’s general terms require the named passenger’s valid ticket and identification. The ticket must match the journey, train, date and class. Ticket offices close 20 minutes before departure, while boarding gates close 10 minutes before departure.

For a hypothetical 14:00 train, those closures are 13:40 and 13:50. Arriving at the station at 13:45 is already too late for that departure’s ticket-office service, even though the boarding gate has not yet closed. These are deadlines, not a recommendation to arrive with ten minutes to spare; baggage screening and finding the correct gate happen before boarding.

The outbound flight introduces another deadline, set by the airline. Choose the rail journey against the airline’s airport-arrival requirement, including getting from the rail platform to the correct terminal’s check-in area. If no train gives you that margin, move the airport journey earlier, stay near the airport the previous night or use a suitable road transfer. Do not make the itinerary depend on an unverified luggage delivery or treat station opening hours as a promise of a late train.

Save the named stations, hotel entrances and bookings before setting off, with passenger documents accessible. If the party needs data for pickup messages or changes, compare Saudi Arabia eSIM options against that need. A data-only plan does not add ordinary telephone calls, and the country listing does not establish reception throughout the rail journey. Keep the entrance pins available offline too.

With the three rail legs and four hotel transfers accounted for, you can choose the train for what it does well without leaving the final few kilometres, or your luggage, to chance.
