Hokitika Wildfoods 2027: do you need a brave stomach or just a sensible tasting budget?

Wildfoods is on 13 March 2027 in Hokitika. Limited earlybird adult entry is NZ$40, compared with NZ$65 at the gate; food costs extra. Two adults choosing a separate NZ$60 food budget would set aside NZ$140 with earlybird admission, before drinks, transport and fees.

Choose your Wildfoods day and tasting budget

There is usually someone in the group chat who announces they will eat absolutely anything. It is worth leaving a little room between that declaration and their eventual decision at the stall, particularly when everyone else has a camera ready. Hokitika Wildfoods works better as a day of curiosity than a compulsory audition for the bravest person on holiday.

The festival is announced for Saturday 13 March 2027 at Cass Square, Hokitika. Unusual food is part of its appeal, but so are music, costumes and the wider West Coast celebration. You can be interested in the day without wanting the most adventurous thing on every menu. The more useful planning question is whether your group will enjoy choosing its own food, and what you will spend once you are through the gate. Official festival announcement

You do not all have to eat the same thing

The organiser describes a range that includes whitebait, venison and wild pork alongside adventurous examples such as huhu grubs. It also advertises vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices, plus familiar festival food in a family zone. That gives a mixed group more possibilities than the festival’s most dramatic food photographs might suggest. Festival information

For the enthusiastic eater, the attraction may be trying an ingredient they have never encountered. For their partner, it may be lunch, live music and the pleasure of watching someone else reconsider a confident statement. Neither person needs to spend the whole afternoon defending their choice.

A good way to plan together is to name the part of the day each person actually wants. If one of you is coming for food discovery, another for the music and a third for the costume fun, you have the beginnings of a shared day. If someone would only enjoy it with one particular dietary option, that needs a more specific answer from the eventual stallholder before you commit.

The general dietary descriptions are useful starting points, but they do not establish ingredients or preparation arrangements at every stall. If you have an allergy or another specific requirement, ask that stall about the actual ingredients, shared equipment and preparation of the dish you want before ordering. If the answer doesn’t establish what you need, choose another dish or stall. A festival’s broad menu categories cannot answer that question for a particular kitchen.

What is actually announced for 2027?

The 2027 homepage checked on 31 October 2026 specifically features tahr burgers, with more food announcements to follow. It also promotes live music and Feral Fashion, while further entertainment details are still coming. That is a useful distinction from the many unusual dishes described in older coverage: a memorable past menu is not the next festival’s shopping list. 2027 features

There is a practical reason to keep the menu open at this stage. The organiser’s stallholder timetable places application decisions in December and site allocation in January. Until that process develops, choose the festival for the experience rather than booking a flight around a particular dish you saw in an old article.

Costumes give the event another way to be playful. The linked visitor-centre description explains Feral Fashion as creative outfits inspired by nature, alongside the food and music. You can put your enthusiasm into what you wear even if your lunch order remains quite composed. Hokitika isite festival description

Your ticket is the entrance budget, not the food budget

As checked on 31 October 2026, the official ticket page advertises limited earlybird adult admission at NZ$40, compared with NZ$65 at the gate. Admission gives access to the stages, stalls and main events; food is sold separately. Build a tasting allowance into the day instead of treating entry as an all-you-can-eat wristband.

Here is a worked example for two adults who choose to set aside NZ$60 between them for food. That NZ$60 is their own spending envelope, not a measured average or a promise about how many dishes it buys.

Two-adult exampleAdvertised earlybird, if availableGate admission
Admission2 × NZ$40 = NZ$802 × NZ$65 = NZ$130
Chosen food allowanceNZ$60NZ$60
Entry plus that food allowanceNZ$140NZ$190

Drinks, transport, accommodation and any booking fees sit outside those totals. The admission difference is NZ$50 for the pair, so securing the limited earlybird offer can make more difference to this budget than agonising over one extra snack. Use the official page’s ‘Book earlybird’ button for the NZ$40 offer. If that limited allocation is unavailable, the published NZ$65 gate rate gives you the fallback admission budget; do not assume an unpublished intermediate rate.

The cheaper NZ$30 local offer is for West Coast residents. An Australian holiday address in Hokitika does not turn it into your visitor rate. Council’s local-ticket announcement

How the stall prices help you plan

The 2027 stallholder pack asks food stalls to offer items below NZ$10 and sets a NZ$20 maximum product value. It also requires clear product pricing. Those are the organiser’s requirements for sellers, rather than a finished menu, but they give you a sensible way to read the options when published.

An under-NZ$10 item does not necessarily replace lunch, and the requirement does not mean every item is below that price. Look at what is being served and how much you want to eat before translating your food allowance into a number of tastings.

For the example couple, the useful decision is whether NZ$60 is a shared limit or two separate NZ$30 allowances. Sharing a budget works nicely until one person quietly allocates most of it to their research programme. Agreeing that beforehand leaves more time for choosing food and less for conducting a financial review beside a queue.

Family gate prices and when to arrive

The official ticket page publishes these gate categories: adults NZ$65, young people aged 12–17 NZ$20, and children aged 11 and under free. Two adults with a 10-year-old and a 14-year-old therefore have a published gate-admission subtotal of NZ$150, before food. Use that specifically labelled ticket table for this calculation; the general FAQ’s under-five wording does not describe the same published category. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and the seller requires children to remain supervised.

Choose ordinary admission for the tasting-budget plan in this article. It includes access to the stages, stalls and main events. The VIP description doesn’t make clear which meals and drinks, if any, are included, so there isn’t enough detail to compare its food budget with this one. You don’t need to pay more to follow the plan here.

Plan to enter from 10.30 am, the gate-opening time on the visitor ticket page. The stallholder pack’s 10 am event start is not the public admission instruction. The festival runs rain or shine and prohibits outside food and alcohol, so bring a rain layer and keep the separate food allowance in the budget.

Cass Square is the venue. The admission calculations above include no travel service; the simplest version of this plan starts and ends in Hokitika. Save the festival booking and agree a meeting point with your group before spreading out among the stalls.

For Australians continuing beyond Hokitika, our New Zealand eSIM can supply data for maps and the group’s messages across the holiday. Keep the tickets and meeting point offline too. Our New Zealand road-trip preparation guide covers checking the actual West Coast route and saving what you will need offline.

Then leave the group’s tasting ambitions pleasantly flexible. A good festival day does not require everyone to order the same lunch, and whoever made the boldest promise in the chat is allowed to change their mind.
