Visiting Australia, or already covered by a local service?
If you already have an Australian mobile plan with enough domestic data, first use that allowance rather than buying another connection by habit. This guide is for someone who needs separate travel data, including an inbound visitor using apps for calls and bookings.
Use the existing data planner above: enter your arrival and departure dates, choose the closest travel style and tell it whether you need hotspot. It estimates a data range and shows an available matching option when it can. A no-fit result is a reason to compare the offers below or email hello@thesimshop.com.au with the dates and essential requirements. The tool does not prove coverage at a particular address or create an ordinary phone number.
Match the countries before the allowance
The selected plans cover Australia. They do not include a New Zealand leg or ordinary Australian calls/SMS. For a combined route, use the Australia and New Zealand service guide before choosing separate or regional data.
Country inclusion isn’t a promise of reception on every rural road, at a campground or in a remote park. Ask the accommodation which operators work at the actual address, then compare that with the network listed for the exact product. If a required stop cannot be confirmed, arrange an appropriate alternative and keep navigation, tickets and accommodation details offline; more gigabytes cannot repair a coverage gap.
Two Australia trip budgets
For a fourteen-day Australia visit, try an assumed 0.6GB a day plus 1GB spare. That comes to 9.4GB. Keep the same daily use and reserve for twenty days and you’ll need 13GB, so the longer holiday changes which plan fits.
| Assumed trip | Calculation | Budget |
|---|---|---|
| Fourteen days | 14 × 0.6GB + 1GB reserve | 9.4GB |
| Twenty days | 20 × 0.6GB + 1GB reserve | 13GB |
These are stated inputs, not measured visitor averages. Downloaded maps and media can reduce mobile use, while video calls, uploads and a connected laptop can increase it. Use your phone’s app counter over a known period to choose a more relevant daily input.
Our 10GB/30-day offer at A$27.95 leaves 0.6GB beyond the reserve already included in the fortnight budget. It is 3GB short of the twenty-day budget, so choose 20GB/30 days at A$44.95 for that example; it leaves 7GB. Both quoted offers last thirty days once started, with a 180-day purchase-to-start window.
Current fixed-data options
| Total data | Days once started | Current price | Start using within |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB total | 7 days | A$5.95 | 180 days |
| 3GB total | 30 days | A$13.95 | 180 days |
| 5GB total | 30 days | A$17.95 | 180 days |
| 10GB total | 30 days | A$27.95 | 180 days |
| 20GB total | 30 days | A$44.95 | 180 days |
These selected offers provide one total allowance, not a daily refill. The plan’s days begin when the eSIM first connects to a mobile network covered by the plan. The start window is how long you can wait after buying before that first use. Buy within that window; installing before departure is not a way to extend it.
Keep data from disappearing in the background
- Download offline maps and the first accommodation details while still on Wi-Fi.
- Set photo and cloud-backup apps to Wi-Fi only for the trip.
- Turn off automatic app updates and high-quality video autoplay on mobile data.
- If you need to share data with a laptop or another phone, treat hotspot as a separate requirement and check the selected plan’s current note rather than assuming it is included.
When the estimate is not enough
Do not assume every eSIM can be topped up or extended. Check the current order details and eSIM status first. If you need help choosing before purchase, email hello@thesimshop.com.au with your destinations, dates and whether you will use hotspot or video. It is much easier to choose a sensible allowance while you still have a coffee and stable Wi-Fi.
Set the phone up only after landing
Buy the plan before travel, but do not scan the QR code, tap a quick-install prompt, install or activate the travel eSIM before you leave. After landing, use airport Wi-Fi only after you can sign in and open a normal webpage. If that does not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection, then open the SIM Shop setup email and start. This keeps setup simple when you are tired and travelling.
When you install, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and keep Australian-line data roaming off unless you intentionally use home-carrier roaming. On current iPhone software, the data-line path starts at Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; other iPhones may say Cellular or Mobile Data. The full iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and other-Android routes are in the eSIM install guide.
