A map for tomorrow's drive is more useful downloaded tonight than waiting to load when you've already missed the turn. Start by saving your route, accommodation and booking details on Wi-Fi, then budget mobile data for what still needs a live connection.
Use the NZ data planner above
Enter the arrival and departure dates, choose the travel style closest to your habits and select whether you'll use hotspot. The planner estimates a data range and shows a matching available plan when it can. Its estimate doesn't establish reception along every road or promise that a particular laptop can tether.
If it finds no suitable plan, keep the dates and estimated range and compare the fixed offers below. Email hello@thesimshop.com.au with those dates, the route and any essential sharing requirement if the available options don't fit.
A fourteen-day road-trip budget
Suppose you’re planning fourteen days on the road and have chosen a budget of 0.45GB a day for the jobs that still need mobile data, plus 1GB spare for a busier day. That comes to 7.3GB; these are illustrative inputs you can replace, rather than measured average app use.
Our current 10GB/30-day NZ plan at A$23.95 covers that stated amount. The allowance and the offline preparation solve different parts of the drive: the table gives the data budget, while saved maps keep directions available through a coverage gap.
| Part of the trip | Budget |
|---|---|
| Maps, messages, bookings and browsing after offline preparation | 14 × 0.45GB = 6.3GB |
| Reserve for a busier day or changed route | 1GB |
| Total to plan around | 7.3GB |
A 5GB plan is 2.3GB short of this budget. A 10GB plan leaves 2.7GB. If your habits need 1GB a day instead, fourteen days plus that same reserve comes to 15GB, so the 20GB option is the better fit for those assumptions.
If you want to refine the planner’s estimate, look at your phone’s per-app mobile usage over a known period. On iPhone, find Mobile Service or Mobile Data in Settings and check when Current Period was last reset. Galaxy uses Connections > Data usage; Pixel shows app data usage under the SIM settings. A counter covering several months is not one week’s use.

These selected New Zealand offers start their running validity on first network connection and have a 180-day start window. The allowance is shared across the plan, not refreshed daily. They provide data, not ordinary calls or a New Zealand phone number.
For the 7.3GB example, choose 10GB. If you're only making a short city visit and a measured budget fits 3GB, there's no need to pay for the road-trip allowance merely because this article used it as an example.
Keep coverage out of the gigabyte calculation
Read the NZ road-trip coverage and offline checklist before relying on live navigation between stops. The selected product's listed network access isn't a measured guarantee of signal on every rural road.
Save maps while online and keep the first accommodation address, booking reference and transfer details available offline. Download podcasts and video on Wi-Fi, set photo backup to Wi-Fi only and keep app updates off mobile data. These steps protect the allowance you planned; they don't create a mobile connection where none exists.
If you're sharing with another device
Budget the second device's use as well. A phone's own usage history doesn't include a laptop's future software updates or uploads. These fixed plans describe hotspot availability as network- and device-dependent. If sharing is essential, ask us about the exact offer and devices before buying; choose a plan with confirmed suitable sharing terms if that requirement can't be established.
Buy before flying, install after landing
Save the order email before departure. After landing, join airport Wi-Fi, complete its sign-in and open a webpage before installing. Use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection if needed. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, keep Australian-line data roaming off and disable automatic switching. Follow the email for the travel line's own settings.
If the allowance runs low, open the order's available options rather than assuming every plan can be extended or reloaded. Send us the order number and remaining travel dates if you need help. Leave the installed profile in place.
