Amazon lodge or river cruise from Iquitos? Start with the experience you want

Choose the named Explorama Lodge Canopy Walkway Special if its day-three walkway visit is your priority. For documented room climate control, compare the named Delfin III suites. Both examples include activities beyond their lodge or cruise label, so compare the full itinerary, room and party before the price.

Choose the Amazon activities and room you want

You can be fascinated by the rainforest canopy and deeply committed to a comfortable night’s sleep. These are compatible personality traits, even if your holiday search has started presenting “adventure” and “comfort” as opposing teams.

Around Iquitos, the useful choice is more specific than lodge versus cruise. Which activities are in the programme? What is the room actually like? How will you get from that room to the places you want to explore?

A lodge can include boating, and a cruise can include walking. A canopy excursion shown on a property’s website may be an extra rather than part of your booking. To make the comparison concrete, this guide looks at two three-night options: Explorama Lodge’s Canopy Walkway Special and Delfin III’s three-night cruise. They illustrate how to read a package, rather than stand in for every Amazon lodge and vessel.

If the treetops are the attraction

The appeal of a canopy walkway is the change in perspective. Instead of looking up from a forest trail, you can observe vegetation at treetop level and see how the forest looks from above. Explorama’s walkway description places its suspended route among tree platforms, reaching more than 35 metres above the ground. That is a very particular experience to choose a trip around.

The booking detail matters because Explorama operates several properties. Its canopy page lists visits as included for ExplorNapo Lodge and ACTS Field Station guests. For Explorama Lodge and Ceiba Tops guests staying two or more nights, a full-day excursion is available. “Available” is the word to notice: meeting a minimum stay does not establish that the excursion has been added to your booking.

The named Explorama Lodge & Canopy Walkway Special, four days and three nights, removes that particular ambiguity by placing the canopy visit on day three. It keeps all three nights at Explorama Lodge and uses a boat journey and a hike to reach the walkway.

If that walkway is the reason for the trip, choose the named Special with its day-three visit. A generic lodge booking leaves the excursion to be added, and the published Delfin III programme does not name the same walkway.

The water changes the day

Explorama’s programme gives a useful example of why a lodge stay does not mean every outing happens on foot. Its first-day lake trail passes through seasonally flooded forest. At high water, that excursion takes place in an open boat instead. The programme also includes a separate boating outing, so even this lodge-based trip mixes ways of exploring.

That change can be part of the interest. The same landscape is experienced differently when water becomes the route through it. For someone who only wants a walking holiday, however, this is not a suitable all-walking programme: boating is part of it even before a high-water substitution.

Delfin III also publishes different water-season programmes. Its three-night high-water itinerary lists kayaking, a night safari and the Fundo Casual trail walk. It is not simply three nights watching the banks from a large boat. You leave the vessel for excursions, and the published itinerary is subject to conditions. See the current Delfin III programmes for the version relevant to your departure.

Put the walking, small-boat outings and time back at the accommodation beside each other across the whole stay. That is the comparison that tells you how much of the holiday goes to the activity you most want.

Choose the room honestly

Explorama Lodge describes screened, palm-thatched rooms with private bathrooms, connected to its other facilities by covered walkways. Its room description also identifies a hammock house, which is useful to know if your ideal break between excursions involves very little ambition.

The published room page does not establish air conditioning or hot-water provision. If either is essential, this description is insufficient to put Explorama Lodge on your shortlist. A private bathroom does not establish those separate features.

Delfin III explicitly lists climate control for its Upper Suites and the same amenities in main-deck Suites. Those are the documented climate-controlled choices in this comparison; keep the named category on the booking.

It helps to divide your wishlist into essentials and preferences. For one traveller, climate control will decide the shortlist. For another, the canopy programme will matter more, provided the room meets their needs. Neither person needs to audition for the role of Most Rugged Holidaymaker.

A three-night wishlist to take to the booking

The details below were checked on 21 October 2026. Use them to request the current programme and exact room, not as a promise that every departure will operate identically.

Climate control in the roomDelfin III names it for Upper Suites and main-deck Suites. These categories meet the published requirement; Explorama Lodge’s description does not.
A trip with a six-year-oldDelfin III starts at seven; Explorama publishes a child rate for ages three to eleven.Exclude Delfin III. Explorama has a published eligible age bracket, separate from the suitability of each activity.
A fully seated or step-free experienceDelfin describes skiffs, possible wet landings and uneven terrain; Explorama’s canopy programme includes a hike.Neither programme establishes this requirement. Do not choose either on the assumption that room comfort makes the excursions accessible.

The child-age and excursion details come from Delfin’s terms and Explorama’s 2026 rates. Explorama lists a 30% discount for children aged three to eleven across its programmes. A child rate establishes the booking bracket; it does not establish that a particular child will be comfortable with heights, hikes or boat boarding.

Compare the whole booking once the experience fits

After the activities and room meet your needs, compare the costs on the same basis: the same dates, number of nights, party and occupancy. It is easy to compare a per-person sharing rate with a solo quote and wonder why the maths has developed a personal grudge.

Delfin’s published rates are for each person when two people share a room. For solo use of a Delfin III Suite or Upper Suite, the normal supplement is 50%, so the baseline budget is 1.5 times the sharing rate. Only use a lower figure when the booking itself grants a promotional waiver.

Transfers need the same attention. Delfin’s included airport transfers apply to its recommended LATAM flights. Explorama’s published terms say arrival after 4 pm requires a first night in Iquitos and transfer to the lodge the following morning. A late arrival therefore changes the calendar: it cannot be treated as the first lodge night.

Keep Explorama’s final lunch alongside the departure-flight details, because its inclusion depends on that flight. It’s a small condition to settle in the itinerary and a considerably less interesting one to discover when you’re hungry.

Return to your essentials before asking for the final quote: the canopy day belongs to the named lodge Special, while documented climate control belongs to the named cruise suites. Price the dates, room and occupancy that actually meet those needs.

Sort the phone before the river leg

Save the agreed programme, meeting instructions and operator contact details offline before leaving your connected arrival base. That gives you the information you need without relying on a lodge connection or onboard service.

If you need data for arrival messages and bookings in Iquitos or Lima, compare our Peru data eSIM options with the service you already have. Confirm whether the operator uses app messages or needs an ordinary call. Keep the river programme downloaded either way; mobile reception and onboard Wi-Fi are separate from the itinerary you are buying.
