Is Nomad worth it? The best rewards for ordinary buyers, and the refund clause underneath

These are live examples, not a claim that every Nomad plan is cheapest. Sales can end and destination prices can move. Read the AUD total on the exact page you are buying and compare the same data and validity.

Two structural advantages worth naming. Their Global-EX range runs to 365 days of validity, with fifty gigabytes over a year, which very few competitors match. And their UK plans include real minutes and texts: 5GB with 100 minutes and 100 texts up to 50GB with 450 and 450.

They also discount constantly, with seasonal and multi-plan codes, which is good for you at the checkout and makes any price table a snapshot.

What Nomad genuinely gets right

1. The best rewards for ordinary buyers, fully published.

• 25 points per US$5 spent, redeemed at 100 points to US$1. A straight five per cent back.
• 200 bonus points, worth US$2, on any repeat purchase of 10GB or more, up to five times a calendar month.
• Points can be taken as bonus data, extra days or extended validity rather than money off.
• Points expire after six months, except points issued as a refund, which do not expire.
• Referral pays US$5 to the referrer and US$5 off for the new customer, capped at five friends.

Airalo’s tiered programme reaches 10% at the top, so a very heavy Airalo buyer does better. Below about US$200 of lifetime spend, Nomad’s is the better deal.

Our SIM Shop Credit terms are public: 5% on eligible spend, normally reviewed after seven days, capped and expiring after 12 months. 2. A free starter eSIM for new users , which nobody else in this category offers. It removes the risk of buying before you know the product works on your phone. Sources disagree on whether it is 1GB or 500MB, so treat the size as unconfirmed.
3. Faster refund payouts than anyone. Three to five business days to your card, or points immediately. Airalo’s terms allow up to 30 business days, and we do not publish a payout time at all.
4. A 60 day activation window , which is generous if you buy well ahead of a trip.
5. Long validity. The Global-EX range to 365 days, with fifty gigabytes over a year, is the sharpest long-stay product anyone in this category sells.
6. Owned by a telecom software company. Nomad is a LotusFlare business line, and LotusFlare supplies digital business support systems to tier-one carriers. That gives them in-house commerce infrastructure rather than a rented storefront, which is a software advantage rather than a network one. Who owns the network behind your travel eSIM.

The three things to check first

1. Australian dollars are now displayed, but still check the final total

That confirms display pricing, not the settlement behaviour of every card and wallet. Check the final checkout currency and your statement if a foreign transaction fee would change the decision. Which travel eSIMs actually charge in Australian dollars.

2. The refund terms are the narrowest in the category

From Nomad’s own terms and conditions:

“Customers may request a refund or a change prior to the installation and activation of the E-sim or there is a known technical problem originating from NOMAD after activation of E-sim.”

Read that carefully. There is no cooling off period after activation unless the fault is Nomad’s, and it must be a known technical problem originating from them.

For comparison, Holafly gives six months on an unactivated eSIM, Saily thirty days, and Airalo fourteen days or until activation. Nomad’s unactivated position is comparable; it is the post-activation test that is narrower than anyone else’s.

3. The discount code claim, and what we actually found

This is the part most articles about Nomad get wrong, so here is the full position.

Several third-party sites report that plans bought with a Nomad discount code are non-refundable. If true, that would matter a great deal, because Nomad markets heavily with codes: seasonal offers, multi-plan codes, student discounts and third-party affiliate codes. A large share of their orders would be affected.

We could not verify it. We looked at Nomad’s terms and conditions and their help centre refund article and found no such clause. The same third-party sources also state a 30 day refund window, which likewise does not appear in Nomad’s own material.

So the honest position is:

• The exclusion may exist in campaign-specific terms we could not locate
• It may be out of date, or a misreading of another provider’s policy
• It is not in Nomad’s published terms as far as we could find

What to do about it: if you are buying with a discount code and there is any chance you will want a refund, ask them in writing before you pay and keep the answer. That is useful advice regardless of who is right.

We would rather publish an unresolved question than repeat a claim we could not stand behind.

One more thing worth knowing

Nomad’s published day-plan explanation states 512kbps after its plan-specific daily high-speed allowance. We could not verify one daily allowance or fallback speed for every Nomad unlimited product, so check the exact product before paying.

For our new Indonesia and Japan unlimited families, our supplier gives a written no-usage-threshold position. Thailand states 100GB across the whole plan at up to 10Mbps, then 384kbps. Support hours are also unclear. Nomad’s homepage claims 24/7 support; at least one independent reviewer describes their live chat as business hours only. We could not resolve that from their own material, so treat the hours as unconfirmed either way.

So, is it worth it?

Yes if: price is the deciding factor and its live AUD plan fits your destination. Or you buy several eSIMs a year and want the best published rewards for ordinary spend. Or you want a free trial before committing. Or you need a plan valid for up to a year, or UK calls and texts.

Check first if: you are buying with a discount code and might want a refund. Or you might want a refund after activating at all, because the test is narrow. Or you rely on knowing the throttle ceiling before you buy.

No if: the refund test is too narrow for your risk tolerance, the exact plan’s throttle is unclear, or another provider beats the live AUD price on your destination.
