Roaming vs eSIM

Kenya eSIM or local SIM: will the data be there on the busy day?

At KSh 1,000, Airtel Smarta provides 22 GB upfront while Bazuu provides 1 GB per day for 30 days. A busy upload day and steady daily use can favour different offers; a Kenya travel eSIM with a fixed allowance is another data-only option.

The day you finally upload the photos

A month of data can arrive as one allowance or a little at a time. That difference is easy to overlook until you want to upload photographs after several quiet days and discover yesterday’s unused data has already gone.

Two Airtel Kenya bundles make the comparison unusually clear. At KSh1,000, Smarta provides 22 GB upfront, while Bazuu supplies 1 GB a day for thirty days. The larger eventual total isn’t automatically the better fit. Compare the busy day as well as the whole holiday, then decide whether you need a Kenyan number and ordinary local calls.

The selected offers below were checked on 25 October 2026. Local bundle prices are Kenyan shillings, shown as KSh; SIM Shop prices are Australian dollars. They aren’t an exchange-rate ranking.

The same bundle price buys different access to data

Airtel’s Smarta and Bazuu pages describe:

Selected Airtel bundlePriceData allocationValidity
Smarta 300KSh3003.5 GB upfront7 days
Smarta 1000KSh1,00022 GB upfront30 days
Bazuu Monthly 1000KSh1,0001 GB each day30 days
Bazuu Monthly 2000KSh2,0003 GB each day30 days

Smarta 1000 also includes 300 all-network minutes, 700 on-network minutes and 1,000 SMS. These concern Kenyan networks, rather than ordinary calls to Australia. The bundle prices apply on an eligible Airtel line; they aren’t a confirmed all-in quote for obtaining a new service.

Bazuu’s daily data resets at midnight, with unused data forfeited. A day spent on Wi-Fi doesn’t leave you with an extra gigabyte to use tomorrow.

Work through one large upload day

Suppose your ten-day budget is 500 MB on nine days and 2 GB on one busier day. In decimal units, that is 6.5 GB altogether.

Smarta 1000’s upfront 22 GB fits that pattern and leaves 15.5 GB. Bazuu’s 1 GB daily option falls 1 GB short on the busy day, even though the holiday total is modest. The unused portions from earlier days can’t repair the gap.

Bazuu’s 3 GB daily option fits this particular pattern but costs KSh2,000. It may be more useful to somebody who regularly needs that amount each day than to somebody accommodating a single large upload.

Now change the example to 900 MB every day for thirty days. That is 27 GB overall, exceeding Smarta 1000’s 22 GB while fitting inside Bazuu’s 1 GB on every stated day. Daily allocation can be the right answer when the daily use fits it. These are chosen budgets, rather than measured rates for your apps.

Check what happens when the included data runs out

Airtel’s separate Unlimited Fun offers cost KSh19 for one hour and KSh45 for three hours. Their specific terms set fair-use thresholds of 3 GB and 9 GB, followed by the current pay-as-you-go data rate. They aren’t whole-trip unlimited plans or a promise of endless reduced-speed browsing.

Bazuu also allows further use through another valid bundle or main-account airtime when Data Manager isn’t active. An exhausted bundle doesn’t necessarily stop all spending. Check the applicable settings before leaving the phone to carry on using data.

For an Airtel eSIM, take your original identification to an Airtel shop and follow its registration process. That’s a shop visit to arrange a local service, rather than an emailed travel-data purchase before departure. If you need Kenyan calls, choose the calling bundle as part of getting that line.

Our Kenya eSIM provides one total allowance

For app-based arrangements, our Kenya eSIM gives you fixed data without a Kenyan telephone number, ordinary voice, SMS or an M-Pesa account.

SIM Shop total dataValidityPrice
1 GB7 daysA$6.95
3 GB30 daysA$14.95
5 GB30 daysA$22.95
10 GB30 daysA$39.95
20 GB30 daysA$70.95

For the ten-day, 6.5 GB example, we’d take 10 GB at A$39.95, leaving 3.5 GB above the estimate. The 5 GB option is 1.5 GB short. The total can be used unevenly across the plan, without a daily allocation expiring at midnight.

For eight days needing only 800 MB overall, the 3 GB / 30-day option at A$14.95 fits the dates. The A$6.95 plan has enough data but only seven days to use it. Compare both requirements before choosing the smaller price.

Our plans list Safaricom and begin validity on first supported network connection. The benefit is a defined Australian-dollar purchase and a data pool for the trip, rather than a claim to beat Airtel at every location. Eligible same-area reloads must be made within active validity; don’t assume they extend the expiry.

Agree on the contact method before the transfer

If your driver or accommodation needs to call a Kenyan number, the data-only option doesn’t provide one. A local numbered service and domestic calling bundle serve that requirement. If both parties agree to use the same internet app, data can support that conversation where connected.

Save the agreed meeting point and transfer details offline too. A larger allowance doesn’t establish reception at a particular camp or along a game-drive route, and the phone shouldn’t hold the only accessible copy of where you are meant to be.

For onward travel into Tanzania or elsewhere, use the Africa comparison guide to check the actual country list. The Kenyan Airtel bundles above exclude roaming, and our Kenya country plan covers Kenya.

For our plan, check the phone and unlock status, buy before departure and save the email. Install after landing on working airport, hotel or other steady trusted Wi-Fi, following the issued settings and keeping Australian-line data roaming off.

Choose the allowance you can use on the day you need it. When that fits the dates and the calling arrangements, the headline total becomes a useful number rather than a misleading one.
