Lisbon zapping or a 24-hour ticket? Price the day before loading the card

Price a few Lisbon journeys with zapping, then compare the 24-hour option matching your operators. The €10.35 ferry-inclusive and €11.40 train-inclusive tickets are alternatives; the dearer one does not also add the ferry.

Price the Lisbon day before loading the card

Lisbon’s transport ticket decision starts with what you want to do. A morning wandering the centre, a train trip to Sintra and a ferry outing to Cacilhas can all begin with the same type of Navegante card, but they don’t need the same ticket loaded onto it.

For a few journeys, start by pricing zapping, the pay-as-you-go balance. For a busy day, choose a 24-hour ticket only after matching its operators to your plans. The €10.35 ferry-inclusive ticket and €11.40 train-inclusive ticket are alternatives: paying more for the train version does not add the ferry as well.

The examples below use ordinary adult fares checked on 21 October 2026. They compare actual fare deductions with pass prices, rather than treating every euro loaded onto a card as money already spent.

Three day tickets, three different networks

The Metro’s current occasional fares separate the products like this:

24-hour ticketPriceIncluded transport
Carris/Metro€7.25Carris and Lisbon Metro
Carris/Metro/Transtejo (Cacilhas)€10.35Carris, Metro and the Cais do Sodré–Cacilhas ferry
Carris/Metro/CP€11.40Carris, Metro and CP’s Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado urban lines

Each starts when you first tap it to validate it, rather than at midnight. A new occasional card costs another €0.50, so a first purchase of the €7.25 ticket totals €7.75. If you already have a suitable empty card, you don’t buy the card again.

Keep the operator names in the comparison. A ticket including CP urban trains is not a ticket to Porto on a long-distance train. Likewise, the ferry version names Cacilhas; it isn’t a sightseeing pass for every crossing of the Tagus. The ferry operator’s own terms explicitly exclude its other river connections from that daily ticket.

Zapping is one balance with separate operator charges

Zapping lets different operators deduct fares from the same stored balance. It doesn’t turn a Metro-to-tram-to-ferry sequence into one shared fare.

The deductions used in this dated comparison are €1.72 for a Metro journey, €1.72 for a Carris journey, €2.05 for CP urban rail and €1.60 for a Cacilhas ferry crossing. Carris allows an hour on its regular network for its zapping charge. Moving to another operator creates a new charge under that operator’s rules.

For example, a Metro ride followed by a Carris tram costs €3.44 in zapping deductions even if you change quickly. There is also a separate €1.90 Carris/Metro ticket allowing eligible transfers within an hour, with no consecutive Metro journeys. For just that one eligible linked journey, choose the €1.90 ticket on an empty suitable card instead of assuming zapping must always be cheapest.

For the day comparisons below, each counted city journey is separately chargeable. Two Carris rides within the same eligible hour are not automatically two charges. Count the separately charged movements, rather than every arrow on the itinerary.

What three different days actually cost

These are fare-planning examples, not suggested attraction schedules. They assume an existing usable card, enough zapping balance and travel completed within the relevant 24-hour period; a new card adds €0.50 to either single-card option.

Day’s travelZapping deductionsRelevant day ticketOur choice for exactly that travel
Three separately charged Metro/Carris journeys3 × €1.72 = €5.16€7.25Zapping saves €2.09
Five separately charged Metro/Carris journeys5 × €1.72 = €8.60€7.25Day ticket saves €1.35
CP return to Sintra plus two separate Metro journeys2 × €2.05 + 2 × €1.72 = €7.54€11.40Zapping saves €3.86
The same CP return plus five separate city journeys€4.10 + €8.60 = €12.70€11.40CP-inclusive day ticket saves €1.30
Cacilhas ferry return plus two Metro journeys2 × €1.60 + 2 × €1.72 = €6.64€10.35Zapping saves €3.71
The same ferry return plus five separate city journeys€3.20 + €8.60 = €11.80€10.35Ferry-inclusive day ticket saves €1.45

The Sintra example is why “day trip plus city transport” isn’t enough to recommend the expensive pass. Much of your day may be spent walking around after the train arrives. Two Metro rides don’t make the rail-inclusive ticket pay for itself.

Nor does a ferry outing automatically justify an unlimited ferry ticket. One crossing each way can work well with zapping. If you already expect a busy Carris/Metro day as well, the ferry-inclusive pass becomes more attractive: its €10.35 price is slightly below the €7.25 city pass plus €3.20 of separate ferry deductions, even before considering an extra card for different ticket types.

The CP calculations use its published €2.05 zapping fare. CP permits travel and transfers within its Lisbon urban services for the first 90 minutes, followed by a final half-hour for finishing the journey without re-entry. Our return example assumes separate outward and later return journeys, not a return squeezed into that window.

Loaded credit isn’t the same as the fare consumed

Zapping top-ups come in fixed amounts, including €3, €5, €10 and subsequent €5 steps up to €40. You cannot necessarily load the exact total in the table.

Starting from an empty card, loading €10 for the €7.54 Sintra-and-Metro example leaves €2.46 afterwards. With a new €0.50 card, the initial payment is €10.50, although only €7.54 has been deducted for those journeys. The remaining balance has value if you use it later; it shouldn’t quietly disappear from the comparison or be described as cash already refunded.

For a short visit, choose the smallest permitted loading amount that covers the intended journeys, then add more if your plans expand. There is no prize for flying home with the most generously funded souvenir card.

Don’t load a day pass over leftover zapping

The occasional Navegante card holds one ticket type at a time. You can’t leave unused zapping on it and simply add a different daily product alongside it.

If tomorrow calls for a day pass while today’s card still has credit, buy a second €0.50 occasional card for that pass and retain the first for later zapping journeys. Keep them distinguishable and present only the intended card to the reader. This is a practical way to preserve the remaining credit without inventing an instant conversion between products.

Each traveller needs their own card while travelling. A couple can share the planning, but not pass one loaded card back through the gate to cover both people. Keep the loading receipt too, and finish a validated CP journey before loading another product: CP warns that changing the card’s contents during an active journey can cancel its existing validation.

A 24-hour pass still has a boarding boundary

CP’s daily-pass conditions allow only exits at its stations during the final thirty minutes of validity. If you first validate at 10:00 on Monday, the pass runs to 10:00 Tuesday, but the final CP exit-only period starts at 09:30 Tuesday. Don’t plan a new CP entry at 09:45 on the basis that fifteen minutes remain.

Buying this particular pass online also produces a voucher, not a ready-to-tap train ticket. Exchange it at a Lisbon urban-train ticket office, load the pass onto an occasional card and validate that card for travel. The voucher doesn’t include the €0.50 card. If you want to buy and start travelling at a Metro station, use the station’s ticket machine or office instead of assuming an online CP voucher works at its gate.

For maps and operator updates, our Portugal setup guide covers phone preparation for the wider trip. Save the route, ticket type and remaining card balance before heading out. Price the journeys you intend to make first, then load the ticket that matches them.
