Choose the safari activities that matter to you
A safari wishlist tends to grow faster than the holiday itself. First there are game drives, then a walk with a guide, an evening looking for nocturnal wildlife and, somewhere along the way, a suggestion that you sleep out under the stars. It sounds like one wonderful trip until you discover that the camp you chose does not include half of it.
The distinction between the Masai Mara National Reserve and Naboisho Conservancy matters because they offer different ways to spend your time. It also matters which camp you book and how many nights you stay. An activity permitted in a conservancy is not necessarily included in every conservancy booking.
If walking or night drives are a priority, investigate a Naboisho partner camp and its actual inclusions. If your main interest is the Great Migration, build a reserve component into your planning rather than assuming a Naboisho stay puts you in the path of the main herds. You may want a combination, but it needs to work as a quoted itinerary, not simply as two appealing names on a map.
The boundary changes what you can do
The reserve’s visitor code prohibits walking, horseback and bicycle safaris, as well as night game drives. For someone keen to explore on foot or after dark, that rule affects where to stay before room types even enter the discussion. The rules appear in Narok County’s reserve management plan.
Naboisho has a different access arrangement. Its own visitor FAQ says you must stay at a partner camp to visit, and ordinary day trips are not permitted. Booking somewhere else in the Mara does not automatically give you a day of Naboisho activities, even if it looks close enough on your phone.
This makes the camp part of the experience decision. You are choosing both a place to sleep and access to a particular programme. It is worth working that out before becoming emotionally attached to a very attractive bathtub in a tent.
What a walk or night drive adds
A guided bush walk can change the scale of a safari. From a vehicle, it is easy to concentrate on the next large animal. On foot, a guide can draw attention to tracks, insects, plants and bird calls, using small details to explain how the wider ecosystem works. Asilia’s walking safari information describes this interpretive emphasis and lists Naboisho among its walking locations.
That makes a walk particularly appealing if you enjoy asking why something is happening, rather than simply identifying what is in front of you. It is not an invitation to get closer to large animals independently. The guide, conditions and the camp’s arrangements determine the activity.
A night drive changes the experience again. Visibility narrows, sounds become more noticeable and the guide uses a light to look for signs of nocturnal activity. Asilia’s night-drive description explains this different approach and includes Naboisho among its locations. You are buying the opportunity to explore after dark with a guide, not a guaranteed appointment with a particular animal.
Neither experience makes a daytime game drive redundant. They answer different interests, which is why the best starting question is what you would like to learn or notice, rather than which camp has the longest activity list.
What two Naboisho camps include
Two camps in the same conservancy illustrate how inclusions can differ. The table below uses Asilia’s current Naboisho Camp information and Hemingways Ol Seki’s published 2026 rate sheet, checked on 21 October 2026. The Ol Seki conditions are a dated example to reconfirm for your travel dates, especially for a later year.
| Location or named stay | Daytime experience | Walking and after-dark distinction | Detail that affects your booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masai Mara National Reserve | Plan around permitted reserve activities and your operator’s programme. | The reserve visitor code prohibits walking safaris and night game drives. | A reserve visit does not grant Naboisho partner-camp access. |
| Asilia Naboisho Camp | Game drives are listed among accommodation inclusions. | A walking safari and night drive are also listed. | Fly camping is an extra, with a minimum three-night stay and further participation, seasonal and weather conditions. |
| Hemingways Ol Seki, published 2026 terms | Two daily shared game drives in Naboisho. | One guided bush walk of 1.5 hours per stay; shared bush breakfast and night-drive inclusion require at least three nights. | A two-night stay does not meet that published minimum for the included night drive. |

The practical consequence is easy to miss. For the published Ol Seki 2026 night-drive inclusion, book at least three nights. Two nights do not meet that condition, and the wider experience list does not establish a paid two-night workaround. Asilia’s listed night-drive inclusion is the other named programme here, with its own accommodation and activity conditions.
Fly camping, an overnight away from the main camp, raises a different question. At Asilia, three nights is only one requirement: the activity is extra, requires at least two participants and depends on season and weather. Reaching the minimum stay does not mean an overnight away from camp has automatically been reserved. Ask for the experience and its arrangements to be confirmed as part of the booking.
These are two useful examples of why “three nights in Naboisho” is not a complete description of what you have bought.
Put migration interests in the right part of the itinerary
Naboisho’s own FAQ says the main Great Migration does not pass through the conservancy; the main herds pass through the neighbouring reserve. Wildlife still moves between the areas, so this is not a claim that Naboisho lacks wildlife. It is a reason to be precise about the experience you are travelling for.
If following the main herds is central to your trip, include an actual reserve stay or a separately booked reserve excursion. A Naboisho-only stay won’t put you in the reserve to follow those herds. The conservancy accommodation inclusions above do not establish a reserve excursion or its entry charge, so neither can be added to the itinerary at zero cost by assumption.
If your stronger interest is a varied programme of driving, walking and after-dark exploration, the conservancy camp’s activity list may carry more weight. You can make that choice without ranking one area as universally better than the other. Wildlife does not rearrange itself because someone has upgraded the room.
Ask for a complete activity and fee quote
A package can include activities while excluding charges associated with the place they happen. Ol Seki’s 2026 sheet separately excludes conservancy charges, the reserve fund and the Masai Mara reserve entry fee. At Asilia, the inclusion list names a conservancy bednight fee while other conservancy and conservation charges appear under exclusions. Neither description supports treating the headline accommodation rate as a total with every location charge included. Ask each camp to itemise those charges beside its accommodation and activity total, so the quotes cover the same things.
For a useful comparison, have each quote describe the same proposed dates and party, then show the planned drives, walk, night drive and any extra experience beside the accommodation. A reserve excursion should have its vehicle arrangements and entry costs identified separately. This lets you see whether a higher total buys an experience you want, or simply includes something missing from the other quote.
Once those details are clear, you can choose the stay around the part of safari that excites you most, with enough time to enjoy it.
Keep the travel arrangements easy to reach
Save your camp confirmation, transfer instructions and organiser’s details offline before travelling. That is useful whether your chosen stay involves a busy arrival day or time away from a reliable connection.
For messages with your organiser during the wider Kenya trip, The SIM Shop’s Kenya eSIM is one data option for a compatible, unlocked phone. If the organiser needs an ordinary telephone call, arrange a calling service as well.
Keep essential instructions on the phone itself, since a Kenya data plan does not guarantee reception at the camp or on safari. With the activity and fee quote settled, you can leave more of the day open for what the guide helps you notice.
