Choose the landscape before the camp booking
A beautifully photographed tent can distract you from a fairly important detail: where it is. If your idea of a Moroccan desert stay involves sand dunes, an Agafay dinner outside Marrakech won’t become that trip simply because the cushions look magnificent.
Agafay offers a rocky, open landscape near Marrakech. Merzouga is the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes in the Sahara. Choose between those settings first, then decide whether you want an evening meal, an overnight camp stay or a larger journey that gets you to the dunes. The word “camp” doesn’t tell you how much of that journey you’ve bought.
Scarabeo’s Agafay camps and an Erg Chebbi Camp tent listing show how those different purchases work. These are named purchase examples, not a ranking of every Moroccan camp. Details were checked on 21 October 2026; the quoted Scarabeo tariffs are explicitly for 2026.
Which landscape are you travelling for?
Scarabeo describes Agafay through its mineral landscape and Atlas backdrop. Its two locations, The Stone Camp and Les Roches Noires, belong to that setting. If the attraction is a meal away from Marrakech’s streets, with the option to sleep under canvas, this is the relevant choice.
For a holiday built around dunes, look towards Merzouga. Morocco’s official tourism description places it at the Sahara and Erg Chebbi, among dunes, palms and desert routes. That is a different destination, not another tent category at an Agafay property.
The useful question is what you’d regret missing. If the answer is the sand landscape itself, choose the Merzouga journey and give its transport a place in your holiday plan. If the answer is an evening outside the city, a reserved Agafay meal can achieve that without moving out of your existing accommodation. Neither landscape needs to win an authenticity competition for the choice to make sense.
You can book dinner without booking a bed
Scarabeo accepts non-resident lunch, dinner and pre-arranged activity reservations. An overnight stay isn’t compulsory. Its FAQ describes Stone as the livelier setting, especially in the evening, and Les Roches Noires as more intimate. Those are useful clues to the atmosphere, rather than a guarantee that one camp will be silent. Scarabeo FAQ.
For two adults starting and finishing in the Medina, the published components work like this:
| 2026 booking example | Meal or room component | Two one-way vehicle transfers | Meal/room and transfer subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone dinner only | MAD 1,100 for two dinners | MAD 550 + MAD 550 | MAD 2,200 |
| Stone suite for two, one night | MAD 2,650 including dinner and breakfast | MAD 550 + MAD 550 | MAD 3,750 |
| Roches Noires suite for two, one night | MAD 2,950 including dinner and breakfast | MAD 650 + MAD 650 | MAD 4,250 |
Sources: Stone Camp 2026 rates and Les Roches Noires 2026 rates. MAD means Moroccan dirhams. These subtotals add the published meal or room price to the two transfers before drinks and activities, not a dated availability quote. The transfer rates used are per vehicle for one to four people, not per person.
In the Stone example, staying overnight adds MAD 1,550 to the dinner-and-return-vehicle calculation. That buys the suite and breakfast; dinner is already in the overnight rate. Charging it again would be an impressively expensive way to eat the same meal.
Both overnight tariffs define half-board as dinner and breakfast, excluding drinks. Lunch is separate. The meal-only rate requires 48 hours’ advance reservation, so this isn’t a plan for arriving unannounced and hoping an empty-looking table is yours.
A tent stay still has practical comforts to consider
Scarabeo’s published arrangements are specific: winter tents have wood stoves and blankets, summer tents have standing fans, and the pools are unheated. Wi-Fi is near the office tent. Solar power supports phone charging, but the FAQ rules out a hairdryer’s consumption. Camp facilities.
If air conditioning, a heated pool or working internet inside your tent is essential, we wouldn’t select this stay on those requirements. The advertised facilities are different. Likewise, a dinner reservation should be treated as a meal purchase, not as a pool pass merely because the property has a pool.
A dinner visit suits someone who wants the setting but prefers their existing hotel room. Choose the overnight stay when sleeping in the tent is part of the appeal.
A Merzouga transfer starts in Merzouga
Erg Chebbi Camp’s tent listing includes a night in a tent, dinner, breakfast and arrival from Merzouga by camel or 4×4. It lists a separate tax of €2 per person per night.
The starting point is the crucial detail. That arrival service does not get you from Marrakech to Merzouga. It also doesn’t establish a return journey to Marrakech or a return transfer from camp. If you need a complete city-to-city itinerary, the tent-only listing isn’t a complete purchase for that job. Choose a programme that actually includes those transport legs instead of using this camp price as the budget for the whole desert trip.
The camel is an option here, not the only advertised way to arrive. For someone who wants the dune-camp stay without riding, the listed 4×4 alternative answers that particular question. That choice addresses how you arrive; it is not an accessibility assessment of the tent or site.
Leave room for the experience you actually want
Scarabeo’s booking page offers activities as additions, including guided walks, riding, pottery and an astronomer session. Buying half-board doesn’t automatically buy those experiences. Activities are also subject to availability and weather, so paying for a bed isn’t a promise of a particular sky that evening.
You don’t have to fill the stay with every available extra. Pick an activity because it interests you, or leave the time for the setting and the meal. A desert break needn’t acquire the timetable of a school excursion.
Save the exact camp name, meeting point and booked transfer details offline before leaving your city accommodation. Our Morocco phone setup guide covers the connection preparation; a country plan isn’t proof of reception at a particular camp. Keep the arrival arrangements available even when your phone has nothing useful to say.
