New Caledonia eSIMs: local calls, data recharges and the expiry clocks

Helia starter allowances last 30 days, while the larger kit’s bonus credit lasts 90 days. A later internet recharge has its own validity. Money in the account is not automatically active data, so compare cash paid, usable allowances and timing before adding credit or activating another option.

Keep New Caledonia data, credit and expiry separate

New Caledonia has a local prepaid eSIM option through Helia by OPT-NC, with mobile data, local calling and SMS in its Liberté starter kits. You can apply online and receive a QR code by email, which makes a physical SIM counter optional on a compatible phone.

The useful comparison goes beyond choosing 15 GB or 30 GB. The starter allowances last 30 days, the larger kit’s bonus credit lasts 90 days, and a later data recharge has its own validity. All three can appear in the same account without giving you the same thing. Your holiday already has enough dates to remember without your phone quietly acquiring a separate social calendar.

These prices and instructions were checked on 21 October 2026. XPF is the CFP franc used locally, and the quoted kit prices include tax; they are not Australian-dollar amounts.

What the two Liberté kits include

Helia’s 15 GB kit and 30 GB kit are both available as eSIMs.

The included calls and texts are for New Caledonia. Ordinary calls or SMS to Australia, and premium numbers, are deducted from monetary credit instead. On the 15 GB starter, that means adding credit before relying on those services, because it includes no Liberté credit. A WhatsApp call uses data and is a different service from dialling an ordinary Australian number. The kit information sheet limits the advertised local SMS service to reasonable personal use, with 500 SMS per day and 250 different recipients per month.

For a hypothetical ten-day trip with a 10 GB data budget and 20 minutes of local calls, the XPF3,000 kit covers both budgets, leaving 5 GB and ten included minutes. If you expect 22 GB of data over a three-week trip, choose the 30 GB kit: it leaves 8 GB, whereas the smaller starter is 7 GB short before any recharge.

Use your own data and calling budget in those examples. Extra account credit can fund a later service, but it isn’t extra data until you buy the relevant option.

Request the eSIM near the trip, with processing time allowed

The operator’s eSIM application instructions say requests are processed within two hours between 6 am and 7 pm, or the next day when made after 7 pm. Allow that processing time rather than expecting the QR email to arrive instantly.

Check your phone’s eSIM compatibility and unlock status, then choose the kit and select eSIM in Helia’s application. Use an email address you can access while travelling. Keep the QR email available, then download the profile after landing, using steady airport or accommodation Wi-Fi and Helia’s instructions. Its tourist page confirms that installation needs an existing internet connection.

Allow the processing window before you need the connection, but do not buy months ahead and assume leaving the QR untouched preserves the starter allowances. Helia’s 6 August 2026 kit information sheet describes the SIM as active from subscription and the initial services as a one-off 30-day inclusion. The purchase and issued-account dates therefore matter alongside the installation.

For a short holiday, arrange the application close to departure and retain the actual account expiry. If you need data for a full 30 days after arrival, an earlier start would shorten that coverage, so include a later recharge in the plan rather than assuming a pre-arrival purchase gives 30 untouched days after landing.

Credit and data are separate balances

The XPF2,000 included with the larger starter is spending credit, not another 2 GB or another 60 days of the original data. It can pay for eligible options while it remains valid, but an option still needs to be selected.

The Helia internet recharge options compared here are:

Internet rechargeCost deducted from Liberté creditIts own validity
1 GBXPF40024 hours
10 GB plus 2 GB bonusXPF2,000Ten days
40 GB plus 10 GB bonusXPF4,000Ten days

Use the Helia app’s Recharger tab to select the recharge. The operator’s recharge explanation says a recharge begins when activated, so activating an option early uses its validity while you wait. A ten-day option bought for a later part of the trip should be activated when that period needs to begin.

Five extra days after the starter period ends

Suppose you choose the 30 GB starter, retain its full XPF2,000 bonus credit, and need 5 GB for five more days after its issued 30-day service period finishes. The 12 GB internet recharge costs exactly that XPF2,000 credit and lasts ten days, covering the remaining five days with 7 GB of data headroom.

This works because the credit is still within its 90-day validity and has not been spent on other services. It is not a continuation of the starter’s original 30 GB, and any unused starter data should not be counted as an extended allowance. The new recharge also does not restore the original two hours of calls or the starter’s local SMS period.

Activate the recharge as the first service period ends, while the line remains active, using a working connection for the app. Do not spend the bonus credit on international calls and then expect the same money to buy the final data pack.

Buying credit costs more than its face value

For the smaller starter, there is no bonus balance to spend. Helia’s Liberté credit page shows XPF1,000 of credit costing XPF1,050 including tax, XPF3,000 costing XPF3,150, and XPF5,000 costing XPF5,250.

A ten-day traveller who starts with 15 GB but later needs the XPF2,000 internet recharge would need enough credit to pay for it. Two purchases of XPF1,000 credit cost XPF2,100 in cash, bringing starter plus recharge to XPF5,100 for 27 GB combined. The recharge’s extra 12 GB still has its separate ten-day validity.

Starting with the 30 GB kit costs XPF5,000 instead, so it is XPF100 cheaper in this example, provides 3 GB more data than that starter-plus-recharge combination and leaves its included XPF2,000 credit available for eligible later use. For this workload, the larger starter is the better initial purchase. Compare cash paid and usable allowances together, not just the credit’s face value.

If you need calls as well as data after the starter period, packaged recharges are another category: XPF1,000 credit buys 1 GB, one hour of local calls and local SMS for 30 days, while XPF3,000 credit buys 5 GB, two hours and local SMS for 30 days. They serve a different job from a larger data-only recharge with a ten-day limit.

Keep the account’s expiry separate from the holiday allowance

A number remaining active does not keep its original data, calls or SMS available. Helia’s kit pages describe three months without recharging, the tourism guide says four months, and the information sheet describes deactivation 90 days after credit expires. These are not a consistent, universal deadline for retaining a number between visits, and none extends the starter data allowance.

For the five-extra-day example above, buy the recharge while the issued line is active and retain its confirmation. For a much later return visit, budget for a new local connection unless your account still shows the existing line and credit as valid; do not leave an essential booking tied only to a dormant tourist number.

Arrival Wi-Fi is useful for the final download

New Caledonia Tourism identifies public Wi-Fi at La Tontouta, Magenta and Île des Pins airports, tourist information points and Nouméa’s ferry terminal. Complete the network’s sign-in portal and open a normal webpage before relying on it for the download. If it is unavailable, use accommodation Wi-Fi or an OPT-NC agency rather than repeatedly starting setup on a failing connection.

Save the first address, transfer details and QR email before the flight. Keep Australian-line data roaming off, and follow the issued local plan’s settings for the Helia line. The aim is to arrive with a purchase that matches your dates, then spend the holiday using the phone when it helps, rather than discovering at the ferry terminal that the credit balance and the data balance were telling two different stories.
