Paquera or Playa Naranjo: choosing Costa Rica’s ferry without booking the wrong peninsula journey

For Montezuma, Santa Teresa or Malpaís, start with Paquera; for the Nicoya or Sámara ferry option, consider Playa Naranjo. On QuickPayCR, count the driver separately from the vehicle. Unavailable online allocation does not prove the ferry is full or reserve terminal space.

Keep the final destination beside the ferry booking

The first question is where you are sleeping, not which ferry has a convenient departure. Puntarenas has crossings to both Paquera and Playa Naranjo, but they leave you in different parts of the Nicoya Peninsula. Buying the other route because its website has space can solve the boat problem while creating a completely new driving day.

For Montezuma, Santa Teresa and Malpaís, start with the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry, operated by Naviera Tambor. For a crossing towards Nicoya or Sámara, Puntarenas–Playa Naranjo, operated by Coonatramar, is the relevant alternative identified by Costa Rica’s tourism board. That is a choice between ferry routes, not a claim that taking a ferry is always faster than staying on the road from every possible starting point.

Keep that accommodation destination beside you through the booking. It decides whether another sailing, a different port or a changed overnight plan is a useful fallback when vehicle places disappear online.

Two landing ports, two sales channels

Nicoya or Sámara, when using a ferry crossingPuntarenas to Playa NaranjoCoonatramar’s own ticket site

Use QuickPayCR for the Naviera Tambor crossing and Coonatramar’s ticket links for Playa Naranjo. These are separate services, so buying a ticket from one does not reserve a place with the other.

Before making either purchase, put the landing terminal and your accommodation into the same route plan. The ferry takes you across the gulf, not to the reception desk in Santa Teresa. That final road section still needs a place in the day, particularly when the accommodation has a fixed arrival deadline.

Your car ticket does not make the driver disappear

QuickPayCR explicitly excludes the driver from the vehicle price. A couple in a car must select the vehicle and two adults, not one adult plus a driver assumed to be included. The person doing the steering remains a passenger for ticketing purposes, however strongly they feel that navigating deserves a discount.

Its ordinary car/SUV category is Vehículo Liviano, code VL. The separate two-axle category expressly says it is not for a car, so do not select that merely because your rental has four wheels. A trailer is a separate consideration too: Naviera Tambor’s tariff says it pays the same tariff as the vehicle towing it.

Here is the vehicle-and-passenger basket for two adults travelling in an ordinary car, using Naviera Tambor’s published tariffs, checked on 21 October 2026:

ComponentQuantityPublished amount
Light vehicle1₡11,400, plus vehicle VAT
Adult passengers, including the driver22 × ₡810 = ₡1,620
Sum before vehicle VAT and any online service charge₡13,020

That last figure is deliberately not an all-inclusive checkout quote. QuickPayCR’s separate online price page displays ₡14,170.20 for the car/SUV category alone, and its terms allow a platform charge of up to 10% of the operator’s tariffs. Do not add the two adult base fares to that vehicle figure and assume you have reproduced the online payment total; the passenger charges in the selected transaction also matter.

For this couple, enter one VL vehicle and two adults, then use the payment total for that entire selection. Comparing a tourism-board vehicle tariff with an online car price, or forgetting the driver, is how a perfectly ordinary booking starts to look mysteriously expensive.

“Unavailable online” is not the same as “the whole ferry is full”

Both Naviera Tambor and QuickPayCR explain that only part of the ferry’s capacity is sold online. The remaining allocation is sold at Naviera Tambor’s ticket offices. An unavailable online departure therefore does not prove that no vehicle space remains, but it does not reserve any of that terminal allocation for you either.

If you have a fixed accommodation arrival time, choose another Paquera sailing with an available vehicle booking before relying on a drive-up attempt. If your day can absorb waiting or an overnight change, terminal purchase is an option. The distinction is whether you can tolerate missing that departure, not whether arriving with enough optimism changes the size of the vehicle deck.

The current Naviera Tambor timetable, effective from 20 April 2026 until further notice, lists departures from both Puntarenas and Paquera at 4 am, 6:30 am, 9 am, noon, 3 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm and 10 pm. Those published services are a timetable, not an observation of available vehicle spaces on your travel date.

QuickPayCR’s purchase terms accept online purchases until two hours before the sailing and require arrival at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure. For a 3 pm service, that means an online purchase deadline of 1 pm and terminal arrival by 2:30 pm. Arriving then does not create a reservation if you have not already bought one.

Decide your fallback before you are in the queue

Suppose your accommodation requires arrival by 6 pm, and you have allowed two hours from ferry departure to reaching it, including the crossing, unloading and onward driving. Those are hypothetical planning inputs, not a published Paquera-to-Santa Teresa journey time. Your latest departure would be 4 pm, so the published 3 pm sailing fits that model and the 6 pm sailing does not.

If the 3 pm online vehicle allocation is unavailable, the noon departure is a useful earlier option to look for. The 6 pm sailing is not a substitute under those same accommodation arrangements. A drive-up attempt for 3 pm is also a gamble with the arrival deadline, so the sensible purchase is an available earlier sailing, or a changed overnight plan if none fits.

Playa Naranjo only becomes a genuine fallback after you rebuild the onward journey from that different landing port. Do not reuse the Paquera road allowance or assume the tickets can be exchanged between operators. Coonatramar also tells passengers to arrive at least an hour before departure, rather than QuickPayCR’s 30-minute minimum.

For an ordinary voluntary change of plans, treat the QuickPayCR purchase as fixed. Its booking page says no changes or refunds, while the detailed terms describe a narrower force-majeure process. That exception is not a flexible fare for changing your mind after buying the wrong port.

Save the purchased tickets, correct terminal, accommodation address and onward road map offline. For operator updates and messages if the arrival plan changes, our Costa Rica phone-data guide covers that part of the trip. Keeping the route downloaded means a lost connection does not also lose the road from your chosen landing port.
