Plan the car and passenger handover at Pasila
The appealing part of Finland’s car train is easy to picture: you settle into a sleeping compartment while the car covers the distance north without you driving it. Before that comes a slightly less cinematic moment when the car, its driver, the other passengers and the overnight bags need to go to the right places.
At Pasila, those places are not all the same. Vehicles load at the car-carrier station; people board at the adjoining Pasila railway station, about 400 metres away. Plan around the car’s loading time, not just the passenger train’s departure, and take everything you need overnight out of the vehicle before loading. VR’s Pasila car-carrier instructions
The car gets its own accommodation. It does not need your toothbrush.
Save two places, not one station name
The loading site is Pasila car-carrier station, Veturitie 19, 00240 Helsinki. VR currently directs vehicle access via Höyrykatu and Tulistimenkatu, with no access through Areenakuja. For the approach described on its station page, turn from Höyrykatu into Tulistimenkatu, then onto Laskumäki following the signs.
The passenger station is Pasila railway station, Ratapihantie 6, 00520 Helsinki, connected with the Mall of Tripla. Its station listing says car-carrier loading is unavailable because loading happens at the separate site, not because Pasila has stopped accepting car trains. VR’s passenger-station page
Keep the two stops in this order:
Car-carrier site: load the vehicle → approximately 400 metres on foot → passenger station: board the night train.
That is a location sketch, not a turn-by-turn walking map. Use the official station map alongside the signs on site; construction can alter access. Save both named places before travelling so a search for “Pasila station” does not send the car to the passenger entrance.
Work backwards from the loading time
VR asks you to arrive at the car-carrier station about 30 minutes before loading begins. The booked loading place and time appear on the ticket, and the vehicle must go to that specified place. Loading-time instructions
For example, if your own ticket showed an 18:30 loading start, the arrival target would be about 18:00. This is an illustrative calculation, not an advertised departure. A later passenger-train time would not move that loading target later.
Put both times in your travel notes: “car loading starts” and “passenger train departs”. That prevents an otherwise well-organised group from congratulating itself on being early for the train while arriving late for the car.
Divide the jobs before reaching the ramp
The following plan assumes two adults are travelling together and one is loading the car. If children are travelling, the non-driving adult stays with them. Decide who carries the overnight bag before the driver joins the loading process.
| Stage | Driver | Other travellers | Vehicle and overnight bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before loading | Has the ticket ready and removes overnight essentials | Stay together with the designated adult | Bag leaves the car before it enters the wagon |
| At the ramp | Follows the loading staff’s instructions alone | Wait away from the loading operation | Vehicle goes aboard without passengers or pets |
| Once parked | Leaves the car-carrier and heads to the passenger station | Move to the agreed passenger meeting point | Vehicle stays aboard; bag remains with its carrier |
| Boarding | Rejoins the group for the booked night train | Board the passenger train | Bag comes into the sleeping compartment |
VR explicitly requires the driver to load without other passengers or pets in the car. Pets cannot remain in the vehicle for the train journey either. The operator also recommends a separate overnight bag, with other luggage left in the car. VR’s practical car-train guide
Our packing suggestion is to keep tickets, medication, chargers, washing things and the next morning’s clothes together. Add the children’s actual bedtime essentials rather than the item an adult thinks ought to be an adequate substitute. Discovering that the indispensable soft toy is enjoying a private night in the boot is an avoidable family meeting.
One adult with children should book a different handover
If loading the car yourself would leave children without your care, choose VR’s car-loading service when buying the vehicle ticket. VR identifies solo travel with children and mobility impairments as reasons someone may need it, and its practical guide states that the service is free. It must be selected during booking, not assumed to be available as an improvised arrangement at the ramp.
At Pasila, deliver the car and keys no later than 30 minutes before loading starts. Give the keys to the car-carrier personnel, obtain their parking permit and display it inside the windscreen. Enclose a printed ticket with the keys. Pasila’s staffed-loading procedure
For the illustrative 18:30 loading start, that means the handover must be completed by 18:00. Arriving at 18:00 with the car still needing to be parked and the paperwork still in your inbox is not the same thing.
This service is not an option for every vehicle. VR’s car-transport terms require the driver to load certain categories, including motorcycles, low-clearance cars, car-trailer combinations and cars with an alcohol interlock. If your vehicle falls into a driver-loading category and you cannot do that while keeping your children supervised, this handover arrangement does not fit your party. Current car-transport terms
Book the car as it will actually arrive
Include the roof box, racks and fixed protrusions in the dimensions. The highest published ceiling is 2.60 metres, but that is not the height available in every wagon or on every train. The selected space must accommodate the actual vehicle.
The weight limits also differ: the fully covered Gd wagon allows up to 3,300 kg gross vehicle mass, with an axle or axle-group limit of 2,000 kg; the partly covered Gfot allows 2,800 kg, with 1,400 kg per axle or axle group. VR’s vehicle-size limits
A passenger cabin booking does not automatically reserve a car space. Add the vehicle in the booking’s passenger menu, or use your logged-in VR account to add a car space to an existing night-train journey. VR prices the vehicle separately according to its size and the trip; the advertised starting price is not a quote for your particular car and departure. Car-carrier booking information
If the booked space’s length, height or vehicle weight changes, VR says the vehicle space must be cancelled and a new correctly specified one booked through customer service. Do not treat a later-added roof box as a harmless detail that can be sorted out while entering the wagon.
Coming back south, get off at Pasila
On the return towards Helsinki, leave the passenger train at Pasila to retrieve the car. The car wagons are separated and moved to the unloading platform; continuing to Helsinki Central leaves you away from the vehicle you came to collect.
Wait for staff instructions before entering the car-carrier. The driver unloads without travelling companions, then collects them from the indicated parking area. If VR’s loading service was booked, VR unloads the car; collect the keys from the station personnel once unloading is complete. Pasila’s car-carrier waiting room is currently open daily from 06:00–11:00 and 14:15–23:10. VR’s unloading instructions and Pasila opening hours
Keep your ticket and the two Pasila locations available offline. For messages between the loading point and passenger station, and updates during the wider holiday, compare our Finland eSIM options against your travel days. Agree the passenger meeting point before loading rather than leaving it to a last-minute message.
With the handover organised, you can concentrate on the part you actually booked: an overnight journey with the driving left to the railway.
VR guidance checked on 21 October 2026. The 18:30 loading example is illustrative; your issued ticket supplies the actual loading and passenger-departure times.
