Book the sleeping arrangement you actually need
A bed without bedding is a perfectly sensible product if you have brought a sleeping bag. It is rather less appealing if the sleeping bag is still at home, where it has excellent views of the wardrobe.
That small distinction sits at the heart of booking accommodation on the W trek. You can choose a campsite for your own equipment, rent sleeping gear or reserve a bunk in a shared mountain lodge, or refugio, but the name of the accommodation doesn’t tell you everything supplied. Meals are another purchase, and a service booked at one stop doesn’t follow you to the next.
If you do not want to carry a tent or sleeping bag, look for fully equipped camping and made beds at each stop, with food selected separately. If you want to use your own sleeping bag, semi-equipped camping or a simple bunk can make sense. The important part is keeping that choice workable across every night, rather than finding three lovely bookings and one rather creative gap.
The equipment and published seasonal prices below were checked on 21 October 2026. They are a comparison of named services, not a hiking itinerary or a claim that those rooms and campsites are available on your dates.
Start with what you are prepared to carry
At Las Torres’ Francés campsite, the three camping products illustrate the difference. An individual campsite is space for your own equipment. Semi Equipped Camp supplies the tent and foam mat, while Fully Equipped Camp adds a sleeping bag and pillow. Meals are separate from all three.
If you have chosen full equipment elsewhere but only a semi-equipped place at Francés, you still need a sleeping bag for that night. Upgrade that booking or carry one; a full-kit reservation at another sector doesn’t fill the missing item. If carrying a tent is out of the question, a bare pitch is not a substitute for a sold-out equipped tent.
For Vértice refugios, a simple bed comes without sheets or a blanket, while a made bed includes the mattress cover, pillow, sheets and blanket. Both are bunks in a shared room, so the choice settles what bedding you’ll find rather than buying a private hotel room. Vértice accommodation FAQ
Here is a compact comparison for five of the sectors you may be considering. It does not prescribe a sequence or imply that every W itinerary stays at all five.
| Sector | Sleeping choices covered here | What to account for separately |
|---|---|---|
| Grey, Vértice | Simple bunk, made bunk, own-gear camping or rented camping equipment | Campsite fee, tent and individual sleeping equipment are separate items; meals are separate too |
| Paine Grande, Vértice | Simple bunk, made bunk, own-gear camping or rental camping | A cooking shelter supplies space, not your utensils or cooking equipment |
| Francés, Las Torres | Bare pitch, tent and mat, or full sleeping kit | Semi-equipped camping lacks a sleeping bag; full kit doesn’t include meals |
| Chileno, Las Torres | Bare pitch, semi-equipped or fully equipped camping | Stoves are prohibited, so a stove-based dinner plan will not work here |
| Central, Las Torres | Bare pitch, semi-equipped or fully equipped camping | A sharing rate is per person; occupying a tent alone has its own rate |
Compare the whole sleeping arrangement
At Grey, the published 2026–27 rates separate the campsite from the equipment. For two adults sharing one rented tent, with both renting a sleeping bag and mat, the arithmetic is:
| Item | Calculation | USD |
|---|---|---|
| Two campsite places | 2 × $11 | $22 |
| One two-person tent | 1 × $58 | $58 |
| Two sleeping bags | 2 × $38 | $76 |
| Two mats | 2 × $16 | $32 |
| Accommodation and listed equipment | Total | $188 |
That is $94 each, before food or other extras. Two made bunks at $114 each total $228, a $40 difference for the pair. Vértice publishes these USD rates for foreign non-residents presenting a passport and valid entry card. The same eligibility applies to its Paine Grande rates below.
At Paine Grande, a simple bunk is $66 and the bedding kit is $48. Together they reach the same $114 published for a made bed. The $66 line saves money only if you supply the missing sleeping equipment yourself. Calling it the “cheap bed” and adding bedding later does not change the total.
Central makes the solo-versus-sharing distinction particularly clear. Its November 2026–March 2027 full-camping rates start at $160 per person sharing or $290 for one person alone. Two sharing therefore start at $320 together, not $160 for the tent. Ordinary full board adds $140 per person, bringing those components to $600 for two or $430 solo. Christmas and New Year meal supplements apply, so those ordinary totals do not cover the holiday meal rate.
None of these calculations includes your park entry or journey to the trail. They help compare sleeping and meal purchases without pretending that one site’s tariff is the cost of the whole W.
Make dinner part of the booking
Chileno expressly prohibits stoves. Reserve the meal service you need alongside the overnight stay, rather than arriving with a stove-based plan. The published ordinary half-board option is $90 per person for breakfast and dinner; full board is $140 and also includes a box lunch. Christmas and New Year prices are higher.
If the meal service you need isn’t available, don’t treat a bag of food requiring boiling water as a solved dinner. The campsite page does not promise campers a hot-water service. Choose a booking with the required food arrangement before committing to that night.
For Vértice’s full board, the order is dinner, breakfast, then lunch or box lunch. It does not begin with lunch on your arrival day. At Paine Grande, self-catering takes place in the designated cooking shelter, not inside tents or the refuge. Bring the equipment and utensils for that choice.
Dietary requirements deserve a direct answer too. Vértice’s current seasonal statement offers regular and vegetarian menus, but only limited possible substitutions for other requirements. It does not operate a certified gluten-free kitchen or guarantee no cross-contamination. Do not buy its ordinary meal plan as a guaranteed coeliac-safe option. Use the specific 2026–27 menu statement when discussing your requirements; a broader answer lower on the FAQ does not remove that limitation. Minimarket stock is also variable, so it is not a dependable substitute for a specific essential food supply.
Finish with a continuous set of nights
The official park reservation page requires overnight accommodation reservations for the W and directs walkers to Las Torres, Vértice or accredited operators. Park admission is a separate purchase, required at least 24 hours before entry. The overnight-reservation condition is not a blanket rule for ordinary day visitors.
Put each actual date beside its sector, sleeping product, equipment and meals. A missing night means the itinerary is unfinished; a missing sleeping bag means the packing list is unfinished. Complete both before treating the trek as booked, and retain each operator’s confirmation rather than only the payment email.
Save those documents offline before leaving town. Our Chile phone setup guide helps with phone preparation for arrival and onward travel. Use a connection in town to settle operator messages and missing confirmations; do not make the trail plan depend on mobile reception.
A cheaper-looking line helps only when it matches the gear you will carry and the meals you have arranged. Book what you need at each stop, rather than relying on the accommodation name.
