Choose the train around the bicycle
A train can turn a cycling holiday into something much more flexible. You can skip a long transfer between bases, save your riding energy for the stretch you came to enjoy and arrive somewhere new with your own bike. It works better when the train is chosen around the bicycle, rather than when the bicycle is introduced to a cheap passenger ticket as a surprise.
For CP trains in Portugal, choose the assembled-bike or packed-luggage arrangement before the service. Intercidades has designated racks for bikes up to 15 kg, while Alfa Pendular requires the bike to be packed; Celta offers reserved space for an assembled bike, and Regional or InterRegional carriage depends on the service and available room. Those are different ways to travel with the bike, rather than one rule you can carry between trains. CP’s bicycle policy
Free carriage is welcome, but it does not mean every bike can board every train in the condition it arrived at the station.
The bike can change which ticket you want
Start with the weight and the way you are prepared to carry it. These three examples show why the fastest departure on the screen is not always the useful one.
| Your bicycle | Practical starting choice | What rules out the easy version |
|---|---|---|
| An assembled 14 kg touring bike you want to ride immediately afterwards | Intercidades with the designated rack seat, or a reserved Celta bicycle space for that route | A normal passenger seat does not establish the rack arrangement; Alfa Pendular needs packing |
| An 18 kg bike you do not intend to dismantle | Do not buy an Intercidades rack-based journey | It exceeds the 15 kg hook limit; buying a more comfortable passenger seat does not increase that limit |
| A folding bike packed to 100 × 70 × 30 cm | The packed-luggage route, including Celta’s stated size allowance | A bag still has to fit the available luggage space on other services; Celta’s limit is not a universal CP bag allowance |
Those are illustrative bikes, not measurements of a particular brand. For an e-bike, CP permits a maximum continuous motor power of 0.25 kW and dimensions comparable to a traditional bicycle. That permission does not waive the Intercidades rack-weight limit. A heavier bike needs a different transport plan before you commit to the rest of the day. If you cannot carry it in the required packed form, remove that Intercidades option from the itinerary rather than relying on goodwill at the platform.
Intercidades: choose the designated second-class seat
CP publishes specific seat positions for the carrier hooks:
| Intercidades route | Designated second-class seats |
|---|---|
| Lisbon–Porto, Lisbon–Braga, Lisbon–Guimarães and Lisbon–Valença, including the reverse directions listed by CP | 15 or 17 |
| Lisbon–Guarda, Lisbon–Évora and Lisbon–Faro | 12 and 18 |
For an assembled bike weighing up to 15 kg, select or request the relevant rack-associated seat as part of buying the journey. CP lists its online ticket office, app, station offices, vending machines, customer-care line and travel agents as sales channels for these seats. If the hooks are unavailable, the alternative in its policy is folded or dismantled hand luggage, not another ordinary seat with an assembled bicycle beside it. Intercidades rack and luggage arrangements
Finish the bike booking before committing to a non-refundable onward activity. A seat for you can remain available after the arrangement you need for the bike has disappeared.
Alfa Pendular means packing, not finding a spare corner
CP’s Alfa Pendular information permits bicycles only when dismantled and properly packed as luggage; its dedicated bike policy also describes folded bicycles. There is no assembled-bike rack option in those rules.
If you choose this service, do the folding or dismantling before boarding and carry the result as luggage that fits the available space. A soft cover draped over an otherwise assembled touring bike is not the same decision. Nor does the fact that an airline accepted your bike case prove that it will fit a train’s luggage area.
For the 14 kg touring-bike example, Intercidades with the correct space avoids repacking the bike between riding days. Alfa Pendular becomes a reasonable alternative when you are willing and able to pack it properly. Compare the total effort, including carrying the packed bike through the station and putting it back together, rather than treating a shorter train journey as the whole calculation.
Celta: book an assembled bike with the journey
Celta runs between Porto Campanhã and Vigo. CP lists station ticket offices and Renfe’s website as passenger-ticket channels, with compulsory seat reservations. Celta ticket conditions
For an assembled bicycle, its bicycle policy requires the bike space to be reserved when the ticket is bought. Use a station ticket office for a purchase that needs both the passenger seat and the assembled-bike space; do not treat a passenger-only online confirmation as the missing bicycle reservation.
A folded or dismantled packed bicycle can instead travel as hand luggage within 120 × 90 × 40 cm. The illustrative 100 × 70 × 30 cm bag is 20 cm shorter, 20 cm lower and 10 cm thinner than those corresponding limits. A 125 × 70 × 30 cm bag fails the 120 cm dimension even though its other two measurements are smaller. Celta bicycle formats
Measure the actual packed item, including anything protruding from it. The point is to choose the arrangement your bike meets, not to make the booking first and hope the bag develops a cooperative personality.
Regional trains are not a guaranteed escape route
On Regional and InterRegional services, CP requires you to speak to the ticket inspector before boarding with the bike. Even a service without a time restriction can be full, so this is not a reserved bicycle space.
There are also explicit exclusions. On weekdays, bicycles are excluded from Tomar–Lisbon trains from 06:00–09:00 and Lisbon–Tomar trains from 16:00–19:00. A weekday 17:00 Lisbon–Tomar plan therefore fails that rule before the question of spare space even arises.
CP additionally lists these restricted services:
- North Line: train 820 Porto Campanhã–Lisbon on Sundays; 4654 Aveiro–Coimbra-B on weekdays; 4623 Coimbra-B–Aveiro on Fridays; and 4625 on weekdays.
- Vouga Line: 5103, 5115 and 5117 Aveiro–Águeda on weekdays; 5104, 5106, 5112 and 5116 in the reverse direction on weekdays.
- Espinho–Oliveira de Azeméis: 5210 on Mondays and Saturdays; 5212 and 5214 daily from 1 June–31 October.
- Oliveira de Azeméis–Espinho: 5207 on Mondays from 1 November–31 May and daily from 1 June–31 October; 5203 and 5205 daily from 1 June–31 October.
These are the current published bicycle restrictions, not a new timetable. Use the actual train number on your intended journey. If the bike must arrive on one fixed departure, a regional train that only takes the bike if there’s room is a poor substitute for a reserved bike space.
CP’s normal bike rules also exclude road transfers. If an itinerary contains a replacement-bus leg, do not buy it on the assumption that the train’s bicycle permission carries across to the bus.
Keep the useful details together
Save the train category, route, date, reserved passenger seat and bicycle arrangement in one place. Record the bike’s weight or packed dimensions beside them, and retain the ticket offline. That makes a changed departure much easier to assess: you know which conditions need to survive the change.
For operator notices and accommodation messages during the wider trip, our Portugal setup guide covers phone preparation. Mobile data does not establish reception along every riding route.
Choose the train that carries the bike the way you want to travel. Then you can spend more of the holiday riding it, rather than negotiating with it beside a luggage rack.
CP information checked on 21 October 2026. Bike weights and bag dimensions used in the worked examples are hypothetical; no live rack availability or ticket purchase was tested.
