RCS messages overseas with a travel eSIM

A message waiting to send doesn’t always mean the travel data has failed. Follow the app’s registration and fallback route before changing SIM settings.

Three message types can look similar

RCS, SMS and iMessage can appear in the same messaging app. The transport matters more than the colour of the conversation. On iPhone, a green message can be RCS or SMS/MMS. A data-only travel plan does not supply ordinary SMS service even when your internet is working.

Google says RCS messages use Wi-Fi or mobile data and require supported participants. Its Messages app can fall back to SMS/MMS. On iPhone, RCS needs supported software and a participating carrier; an available setting is not proof of support on every line.

Before departure

  1. Check which number is registered for RCS and whether its status shows connected.
  2. Send a test to the people you need to reach, and confirm the conversation’s message type.
  3. Review automatic SMS/MMS fallback. If it is enabled, check the home carrier’s overseas messaging charges.
  4. Keep a separate agreed contact method, such as an already configured internet messaging app.

In Google Messages, tap your profile picture or icon, then Messages settings → RCS chats. Read the registered number and connection status there. The same screen has Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS); leave it off if you don’t want failed internet messages automatically retried through chargeable SMS. On supported iPhones, use Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging; availability depends on the carrier and software. Do this while the Australian number can still receive verification messages. Google documents SMS verification as part of resolving number-registration problems. Repeatedly toggling RCS or changing the registered number during a trip can create a new verification problem.

When travel internet works but messages do not

First open an ordinary webpage using the travel data line. If that works, inspect RCS status and the conversation itself. A message waiting to send may reflect registration, recipient availability or carrier support rather than a failed eSIM.

Keep the home number’s identity separate from the travel data connection. Some troubleshooting instructions assume the call and data SIM are the same. Do not switch data back to your Australian line overseas merely to copy a generic instruction without checking roaming charges. Ask your home carrier about your exact dual-SIM configuration.

If the app offers to resend as text, pause and check whether that means SMS/MMS through the Australian service. Turning off fallback can prevent that automatic route, but it can also leave a message undelivered. Use your agreed alternative for something time-sensitive.

A quick decision check

  • No internet in any app: use connection troubleshooting.
  • Internet works, RCS disconnected: read the RCS status in the app. Google says a verification problem can be indicated when “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry…” remains for over 30 minutes. Use Verify your number if offered, only when that number can receive its verification SMS; otherwise use the agreed alternative app and resolve receiving access with the Australian carrier.
  • Only one contact fails: check whether that conversation supports RCS and whether the recipient is reachable.
  • A bank code is missing: follow the bank SMS guide. RCS working does not prove ordinary SMS delivery works.
