Match the fare to the night you want
Start a Romania–Hungary night-train booking with the night you want: a seat, a shared couchette or a sleeping compartment. Then compare the fares that permit it. Otherwise, the attractive price you found can leave you travelling upright while the bed you pictured belongs to another offer.
CFR’s Smart NoFlex Hungary can be suitable for a fixed-date journey in a seat or couchette. It excludes sleeping cars. Smart SemiFlex Hungary permits sleeping-car reservations and offers a partial refund before travel, but it is not a ticket you can casually move to tomorrow’s train. The distinction matters whether Budapest is the next stop in a longer holiday or the destination you need to reach on a particular morning.
A couchette is a bed, but not a sleeping-car ticket
In CFR’s terminology, the “berth car” is the couchette. Its general carriage description has four or six beds with linen, while its sleeping-car description has two beds and a washbasin. That explains why a rule excluding sleeping cars does not necessarily exclude every place where you can lie down. CFR carriage descriptions.
For a solo traveller happy to share a larger compartment, a couchette may meet the actual need perfectly well. A couple seeking a smaller sleeping compartment is shopping for a different experience. Decide which you want before comparing fares; the cheapest seat is not a useful benchmark if you have already decided that sitting through the night is off the menu.
The train itself matters too. MÁV’s international service list, checked on 21 October 2026, shows seats, couchettes and sleeping cars on the Bucharest–Budapest Ister and the Dacia service through Budapest. It lists Muntenia with seats and couchettes, without a sleeping car. Use those named services to narrow the search, then choose the actual accommodation offered for your complete journey and date. A fare that permits a sleeper cannot create a sleeping car on a train that lacks one. MÁV night-train service list.
Match the fare to that choice
CFR’s rules, read on 21 October 2026, give this comparison. Reservations cost extra; the table describes eligibility, not live availability. Official Hungary offers.
| Requirement | Smart NoFlex Hungary | Smart SemiFlex Hungary |
|---|---|---|
| Seat | Permitted | Permitted |
| Couchette | Permitted | Permitted |
| Sleeping car | Excluded | Permitted |
| Voluntary change | Not allowed | Refund and buy a new ticket and reservation |
| Voluntary ticket refund | None | Before first validity day; 25% fee, minimum €3 per person |
For a fixed-date couchette trip, compare the NoFlex total with the SemiFlex total for the same train, journey and couchette category. There is no reason to pay for SemiFlex merely because you want to lie down. Pay more if its refund opportunity is worth something to you, or choose an eligible fare when the sleeping car is the accommodation you want.
For a sleeping-car trip, discard the NoFlex quote before doing the price comparison. This is one of those occasions when the cheapest option can be removed from the spreadsheet with a completely clear conscience.
What a change would cost
Before paying extra for SemiFlex, work out what one change would cost. “Flex” in the name does not make a new travel date free. Here is a deliberately hypothetical calculation using an €80 travel-ticket component, with accommodation charges kept separate:
| Ticket fare before travel | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Original SemiFlex ticket | Example price | €80 |
| Refund deduction | 25% × €80 | €20 |
| Ticket money returned | €80 − €20 | €60 |
| Replacement ticket | Example new price | €95 |
| Extra ticket spend after the refund | €95 − €60 | €35 |
You would have spent €115 on those ticket fares overall: the original €80, less €60 returned, plus €95 for the replacement. That is €20 more than simply buying the replacement ticket in the first place. The refund reduces the damage from changing your mind; it does not make the first booking disappear without cost.
The minimum fee also matters on a low-priced ticket. On a hypothetical €8 ticket, 25% is €2, so the €3 minimum would leave €5 refundable. Those example prices are not observed Bucharest–Budapest fares.
Do not apply this ticket-only arithmetic to the entire checkout total. CFR sells reservations separately, and a change requires a new reservation too. The international terms say reservation deductions are set for the train and shown in the sales system, with a minimum €3 per passenger. Until the sales system displays the actual deduction, leave the accommodation payment out of the refund you are counting on. If a full recovery of every payment is essential to your plans, neither of these offers should be treated as that guarantee.
Three-day validity is not three departure choices
Both offers tie boarding to the train and day on the ticket, despite stating three-day validity. Imagine a booking whose first validity day is 10 November. The SemiFlex voluntary-refund deadline falls before that day, so you need to act on 9 November rather than wait until the morning of 10 November, even if the train leaves that evening. It is not a rolling “until departure” refund window.
Likewise, the three-day wording does not authorise boarding on 11 November instead. For an emailed A4 ticket, submit a permitted cancellation online from your CFR user account before the fare’s deadline, then buy the new journey. Do not arrive a day later expecting the original reservation to follow you. These examples concern a passenger choosing to change plans, rather than a railway cancellation or disruption claim. Buy the complete journey, then keep it accessible
CFR directs international buyers to its international booking service or stations and agencies handling international traffic. Compare the payable journey total, including the selected accommodation, before paying. A headline fare and a separately imagined bed are not yet a booked overnight trip. For the emailed A4 option, generate the ticket from your user account before travel, at least ten minutes after payment confirmation. It then arrives by email and is also downloadable through My Orders. Carry your passport with it. The PDF can be shown on a phone, although CFR recommends a home printout for sleepers and couchettes to reduce overnight ticket-check interruptions. Download the file while on Wi-Fi, so the ticket itself is ready even without reception. A4 ticket instructions, sections 2.2–2.2.3.
For hotel messages and directions after arrival, choose a data plan that lists both Romania and Hungary if you need service in both. The train crosses the border; a one-country plan does not automatically follow it. Our Romania phone setup guide covers getting the phone ready. Keep the ticket downloaded separately, so you can settle into the bed you chose without spending the evening discovering what “SemiFlex” meant.
