Samoa eSIM or local SIM: data, calls and longer stays

For three weeks of light app use, our 5GB/30-day Samoa plan covers more days than the short tourist bundles. Compare Digicel for ordinary local calls and Vodafone’s larger bundles for heavier data use, including any repurchase needed to reach the last day.

The phone plan for the whole visit

Three weeks in Samoa does not necessarily call for a huge data plan. You might want little more than directions, booking messages and the occasional photo sent home. The awkward purchase is a generous allowance that expires after the first week, leaving you to organise another one when you thought the phone was dealt with.

Start with your departure date and the people you need to contact. Our Samoa eSIM is a useful fit for modest data use over a longer stay. Vodafone’s Paradise SIM has much larger allowances over shorter periods, while Digicel offers visitor bundles with ordinary local calls. There is also a separate Vodafone eSIM, with different benefits and a start-date ambiguity worth understanding before buying it.

The offers below were checked on 25 October 2026. Local prices are in Samoan tala, shown as WST; our prices are in Australian dollars. The two currencies aren’t directly comparable just because both use a dollar sign.

Will your accommodation message you, or will you need to ring?

A local phone number matters if you’ll be making ordinary calls to accommodation, a rental company or other contacts. If those conversations already happen through an internet messaging app, a data-only plan may do everything you need. It helps to establish that before comparing the size of the bundles.

Our Samoa eSIM supplies mobile data without a Samoa telephone number, voice minutes or SMS. The plans list Digicel as the network; that doesn’t promise a signal at every beach fale or along the whole coastline.

1 GB / 7 daysA$11.00
5 GB / 30 daysA$28.13

For a 21-day stay with an estimated 4 GB of mobile use, we’d choose 5 GB for A$28.13. It reaches the end of the visit and leaves 1 GB above the estimate. The A$11 option may look appealing for a light user, but its seven-day duration doesn’t fit that itinerary.

The difference is A$17.13 for more data and a longer validity period. The 5 GB is one total allowance across the plan, rather than a fresh amount each day. If your actual use is likely to be much higher, the local tourist offers deserve a look.

Vodafone Paradise: generous data, shorter bundles

Vodafone’s Paradise tourist plans offer 25 GB for 7 days at WST25, or 50 GB for 14 days at WST50. They include unlimited Vodafone-network calls and SMS, with separate other-network and international allowances.

Paradise requires its own SIM, registered using international identification and a boarding pass. It cannot buy Vodafone’s other prepaid plans. Bundles are available through *888# or the My Vodafone Samoa app, and topping up the exact plan amount can automatically buy that bundle.

For 21 days of heavier use, Paradise permits repurchase: WST50 for the first 14 days followed by WST25 for the next seven makes WST75 in bundle purchases. These are consecutive allowances with separate expiries, rather than 75 GB usable from the start. Put the repurchase date in your calendar if this is your choice; the remaining gigabytes won’t extend the first bundle.

Digicel: compare the visitor bundle that fits your dates

Digicel’s Visitor SIM offer provides a free physical SIM through its stores. Take your boarding pass and passport or overseas ID, then use *680# to select a visitor plan.

Digicel also advertises international allowances, but this visitor page doesn’t identify their destinations. We haven’t counted them as guaranteed calls to Australia.

For three weeks of local calling, Premium covers the visit in one bundle. For three weeks of light data and no need for a local number, our 30-day eSIM gives you enough time without buying that larger calling package. The same dates lead to different recommendations because the phones are doing different jobs.

Vodafone’s online eSIM is a different offer again

The separate Vodafone Samoa eSIM advertises 30 GB for 15 days at WST50, unlimited Vodafone local minutes and texts, 50 other-network local minutes/texts and 50 minutes to Australian and New Zealand mobile and landline numbers. It is different from the WST50 Paradise bundle above.

Its page gives two activation triggers: scanning the QR code and completing the online purchase. With those statements still conflicting, we would purchase and install this particular Vodafone offer after arriving in Samoa, on a stable internet connection. That puts both possible triggers inside the trip, rather than gambling part of the 15 days on an advance purchase.

The initial eSIM offer is also described as a one-time bundle. Ordinary prepaid purchases can follow it, but don’t assume you can renew the same welcome allowance unchanged. For a longer visit, compare the whole sequence of purchases before choosing it.

Leave room for the rest of the itinerary

This comparison covers Samoa, including Upolu and Savai‘i. American Samoa is a separate coverage decision. A plan’s international-call minutes don’t provide data there, and similar country names don’t extend the network coverage on your purchase.

If you choose our Samoa eSIM, you can buy it before flying. Save the email, then install only after landing on working airport, hotel or other steady trusted Wi-Fi. The listed validity begins on first network connection; follow the issued settings for your phone.

For a modest-data trip, the useful luxury is having enough days to forget about the plan. If you need large allowances or local calls, choose the matching visitor service and know when it needs another bundle. Either way, the decision should be finished before your holiday turns into a series of balance checks.
