Seattle to Victoria: Clipper, Coho or leave the car behind?

Choose direct passenger-only Clipper for downtown Seattle to central Victoria, Coho with a permitted car for a Vancouver Island drive, or Coho on foot with Port Angeles parking for a peninsula-based city break. Compare access travel and the return route as well as fares. The November 2026 example uses separate Washington and Victoria local clocks.

Decide where the car belongs during the Victoria stay

Before comparing the boats to Victoria, decide what you want to do after disembarking. A city weekend may leave the car in Washington; a drive around Vancouver Island gives you a reason to bring it. That choice also determines which departure terminal belongs in the plan.

From downtown Seattle without a car, choose the passenger-only Victoria Clipper for the direct ferry route. For a Vancouver Island road trip, compare Coho from Port Angeles with the vehicle aboard. If you are already touring the Olympic Peninsula and only want a Victoria city break, parking in Port Angeles and walking onto Coho is a useful third option.

That last choice is easy to overlook. The car can stay in Washington while you enjoy Victoria, instead of becoming a very expensive piece of luggage with its own parking requirements.

Start with the journey on either side of the boat

The Victoria Clipper is passenger-only, running from Pier 69, 2701 Alaskan Way, Seattle, to 470 Belleville Street in Victoria. For a vehicle as well as foot passengers, Coho instead runs from 101 E. Railroad Avenue in Port Angeles to 430 Belleville Street in Victoria. Save the terminal for the service you book, since those nearby Victoria addresses belong to different operators. Starting in Seattle, Coho also requires reaching Port Angeles. Black Ball describes driving via Tacoma or using a Washington State ferry through Bainbridge Island or Edmonds–Kingston before continuing by road. Those access journeys belong in the comparison: a shorter sea crossing does not automatically mean a shorter trip from your hotel. Seattle–Port Angeles approaches

For a hire car, use the drive-on option only where the rental agreement permits taking that vehicle into Canada and supports the intended return location. Otherwise keep it in the United States and choose a passenger crossing. A ferry reservation does not change the rental contract.

What leaving the car in Port Angeles can save

Here’s a ferry-fare and parking comparison for two adults, a car no longer than 18 feet, and a Friday-to-Sunday visit returning to Port Angeles. It uses the operator’s prices checked on 21 October 2026, in US dollars.

Coho lists US$25 per adult each way and US$88 for a vehicle with its driver. Its online round-trip vehicle reservation fee is US$18, additional to the ferry fares. The displayed ferry fares already include the current fuel surcharge. Current fares

ArrangementCalculationCompared costs
Take the car, with two adults2 × (US$88 vehicle and driver + US$25 second adult), plus US$18 online round-trip reservationUS$244
Two adults walk on2 adults × US$25 × 2 crossingsUS$100, before parking
Walk on and park for Friday, Saturday and SundayUS$100 fares + 3 calendar days at the operator’s advertised US$12–15 parking rangeUS$136–145

The driver is already inside the US$88 vehicle fare, so adding two further adult tickets would count that person twice. Also, two nights away can occupy three parking days. Black Ball advertises privately operated lots within one or two blocks of the Port Angeles terminal, rather than parking at the terminal itself. Its range is guidance for those lots, not a reserved parking quote. Port Angeles parking

For those fares, fees and parking, walking on and parking leaves US$99–108 compared with taking the car. Transport around Victoria comes out of that saving. Fuel, Victoria parking, accommodation and any hired transport are outside this calculation, so it is not a complete holiday-price guarantee.

For a central city stay, that saving is a good reason to leave the car behind. If you want several days of independent driving beyond Victoria, having your own permitted vehicle may be worth the additional cost. The better option follows the actual trip, not a rule that cars are always useful or always a nuisance.

The vehicle reservation charge is not a deposit

For a standalone Coho vehicle reservation, the online payment is the reservation fee only. The ferry fare is paid at the terminal; the displayed fare estimate is not locked merely because you reserved the space. Walk-on tickets bought online are prepaid instead. Hotel packages have their own combined-payment arrangement. Coho booking and payment rules, fare-estimate terms

Keep that distinction in the budget. In the car example above, US$18 is not deducted from the US$226 ferry-fare component when you arrive. It sits alongside it.

Vehicle reservations online close three hours before departure. For a reserved car, the published arrival requirement is at least sixty minutes before departure from Port Angeles and ninety minutes from Victoria, with a sixty-minute exception for the named 6.10 am Victoria sailing. A reservation unclaimed by the sixty-minute threshold is subject to forfeiture. Victoria’s earlier arrival instruction still applies. Drive-on instructions

Coho foot passengers are instructed to arrive thirty minutes before departure. Allow the parking and walk to the terminal before that point, rather than arriving at the car park when you are meant to be checking in.

Put the winter clock change into the actual itinerary

British Columbia will not turn its clocks back on 1 November 2026. During the winter difference, Victoria is an hour ahead of Seattle and Port Angeles. Coho’s timetable explicitly labels departure and arrival in each terminal’s local time. B.C. time announcement, Coho winter timetable

For an illustrative Friday 6 to Sunday 8 November 2026 visit, these are published Coho sailings, not checked availability:

LegDeparture and arrival in local timeReserved car arrives byFoot passenger arrives by
Friday, Port Angeles to Victoria8.20 am Washington → 10.50 am Victoria7.20 am Washington7.50 am Washington
Sunday, Victoria to Port Angeles5 pm Victoria → 5.30 pm Washington3.30 pm Victoria4.30 pm Victoria

Both crossings take ninety minutes on that schedule. The outward clocks appear two and a half hours apart because Victoria is ahead. The return clocks appear only thirty minutes apart because you move back an hour. Neither boat has discovered a shortcut through time.

For the Sunday car return, 3.30 pm in Victoria is 2.30 pm in Washington. A phone still showing Washington time can therefore mislead you by an entire hour. Use the departure city’s clock for the terminal deadline. Clipper likewise states that its departures use the local time of the departure city. Clipper clock instructions

The Coho schedule used here covers 1 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It separately lists 4 January to 3 February 2027 as out of service for annual maintenance, so these winter examples are not an instruction to assume a January sailing.

Price the Clipper with your actual bags

For the direct Seattle route, Clipper’s ordinary checked-bag charge is US$20 or C$25 per bag, per leg, paid by card at the terminal. The standard item must weigh less than 50 lb and measure no more than 62 inches in combined dimensions, including handles and wheels. A small carry-on and a personal item are separate. Clipper luggage rules

Two adults with one standard checked suitcase each, travelling both ways, therefore have four bag charges. At the listed US-dollar rate that is US$80, before any card conversion. Comfort Standard and Comfort VIP include one standard checked suitcase per person, so compare their total fare with the ordinary fare plus the bags you would actually pay for. If you only have a compliant carry-on, do not count that unused checked-bag inclusion as a saving. Comfort inclusions

For your carry-on, pack within 56 × 36 × 23 cm, including wheels and frame. Clipper’s travel-information page prints an inch allowance that does not convert to those centimetres; using the smaller metric dimensions keeps the bag within both published sets. An airline cabin bag is not automatically a ferry cabin bag. Carry-on dimensions

Clipper recommends arrival one hour before departure. Its full travel instructions place the final boarding call twenty minutes before departure and require you to be aboard fifteen minutes before it, otherwise you forfeit the seat and fare. For a hypothetical 8 am departure, arrive at 7 am, expect the final call at 7.40 am and be aboard by 7.45 am. That last time is not a terminal arrival target. Clipper boarding instructions

Bring the return journey into the first decision

If you leave the car in Port Angeles, your route needs to bring you back there. If you take it to Vancouver Island, its eventual return is part of the plan, even if Victoria is only your first stop. If you start and finish in downtown Seattle without one, the direct Clipper avoids introducing a separate peninsula transfer solely to reach another ferry.

Save the correct terminal address, return ticket and local-time arrival deadline with your passport and other travel documents. For pickup messages and directions on both shores, our USA and Canada comparison explains the separate choice between regional and country allowances. Country inclusion does not promise reception across the water.

Let the ferry choice follow where you, your luggage and the car actually need to end up. A direct city crossing, a parked car and a permitted island road trip each solve a different holiday.
