Shinkansen luggage reservations: measure the suitcase before choosing your seat

Measure the suitcase’s height, width and depth together, then use the rule for your Shinkansen route and size category. Where an oversized-baggage reservation is required, book the matching seat rather than relying on the airline’s bag acceptance.

Measure the suitcase before booking the seat

A suitcase can look enormous without being “oversized” under the Shinkansen rules. Equally, a case that made it onto your flight without discussion can need a particular seat reservation on the train. The useful starting point is a tape measure, not the airline baggage sticker still attached to the handle.

For ordinary suitcases on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, the oversized-baggage system applies when the total of the three dimensions is more than 160 cm. Book the designated seat with an oversized baggage area when the rule applies. The separate trial allowing unreserved use of some deck storage areas has not removed that requirement. JR Central: luggage information, smartEX: deck-storage trial

Check permission to bring the bag, a suitable place to put it, and the seat that gives you access to that place. Getting one right does not automatically settle the other two.

Add three measurements, not two

Measure the packed suitcase’s full external height, width and depth, allowing for the parts that stick out. Then add the three figures. Do this again if you unzip an expansion panel for the return journey; the bag has not remained the same size simply because it is still the same bag.

These are hypothetical measurements, showing the effect of the rule:

Packed case Calculation What changes in the booking
Case A 74 + 49 + 36 = 159 cm Below the oversized threshold; choose suitable permitted storage rather than automatically reserving an oversized-baggage seat
Case B 80 + 55 + 35 = 170 cm Oversized; select the designated seat with an oversized baggage area for an applicable train
Case A after expanding its depth by 3 cm 74 + 49 + 39 = 162 cm Now oversized; the original storage plan needs revisiting for the next applicable train

The third row is worth checking before a shopping-heavy final leg. The extra purchases may fit inside the case beautifully while changing the railway arrangement you need outside it.

JR Central’s formal Japanese definition extends oversized baggage to a total of 250 cm, while some shorthand on the same page uses a strict “less than 250 cm” expression. For a purchase decision that avoids this wording conflict, use a case below 250 cm in total. For a case measuring exactly 250 cm, get the operator’s confirmation before booking rather than relying on the less restrictive phrasing. Ordinary baggage exceeding 250 cm is not permitted. Do not round an awkward measurement down to make the reservation easier. JR Central: Japanese luggage rules

Dimensions are not the entire allowance. JR’s general rules also limit ordinary luggage to two pieces per person, each up to 30 kg, with a longest side of up to two metres. Certain small personal items are excluded from that count. The table above classifies size; it is not approval for an overweight case or an excessive number of bags. JR Central: personal belongings

Three storage places, three different questions

The words “area”, “space”, “corner” and “compartment” appear in guides and booking instructions, sometimes alongside information from before the trial. Match the description to the actual location instead of assuming every luggage label refers to the same facility.

Where the bag goes What it is for Does your seat need the baggage reservation?
Overhead rack or appropriate space at your feet Suitable smaller luggage that can be stored safely without obstructing others No oversized-baggage reservation merely for using these ordinary spaces
Trial deck storage on applicable 16-car Tokaido and Sanyo trains Available shared storage, including larger or heavier cases whose three-side total is no more than 160 cm The trial does not require a storage reservation, but it is not a substitute for the oversized-suitcase requirement
Designated space behind the relevant last-row seats The oversized baggage area associated with those seats Yes, reserve a seat with that area; an empty-looking space does not make it available to everyone

JR Central separates these uses in its luggage guidance. The deck trial began on 1 July 2025, with its end date to be announced separately. It applies to the specified Tokaido and Sanyo equipment, rather than every train carrying the Shinkansen name. smartEX trial notice

For Case A at 159 cm, being below the threshold does not guarantee an easy lift into the rack or an empty deck space. Choose around the bag’s shape and your ability to handle it. JR permits travellers who need the rear storage, including those with a difficult-to-lift bag, to reserve the corresponding seat. The reservation is about a workable journey, not winning an argument that the suitcase technically fits.

For Case B at 170 cm, finding an apparently generous deck shelf does not cancel the oversized requirement. Reserve the designated seat and use the associated area. Likewise, the reserved rear area is shared among the relevant seat holders; it is not a private cupboard purchased for unlimited luggage.

Check the baggage seat, not just whether the train has seats

smartEX warns that the availability shown for a train can describe the whole train, while the seats with oversized baggage space may already be taken. Select “Seat with Oversized Baggage Area” and inspect the relevant seat availability, rather than stopping when a general search result shows seats. Its guidance also requires the appropriate reservation throughout a connecting itinerary. smartEX: booking with oversized baggage

For example, suppose Case B accompanies you on two applicable Shinkansen legs. A confirmed baggage-area seat on the first leg does not cover the second. Keep both train records together and check the designated seat on each. If the necessary seat is unavailable, change the affected train or arrange another verified way for the luggage to reach your destination before relying on the itinerary.

The designated reservation has no extra charge above the corresponding ordinary reserved-seat or Green Car price. That does not make an unreserved ticket equivalent to the correct reservation. Nor is the published fee for turning up without a baggage reservation a way to buy guaranteed access to a full train. JR Central: reservations and unavailable seats

A stroller is a different category, but the rear space still has an owner

JR exempts items such as strollers, sports equipment and musical instruments from the ordinary oversized-baggage reservation classification. However, using the designated rear space still requires the corresponding seat reservation. A family bringing a stroller should decide where it will go, because being exempt from the oversized-bag rule doesn’t let you use any rear storage area you like. JR Central: special items and storage

Keep unusual equipment questions with the operator’s specific carrying rules. This guide is a suitcase-and-seat decision, not permission for every bicycle, instrument or sporting item in any packaging.

Leave the tape measure somewhere findable for the trip home, especially if the suitcase’s expansion zip is part of your souvenir strategy…
