Count the South Africa data you can use when you need it
A South African data bundle may split its allowance between anytime use and a late-night window. If most of your maps, bookings and messages happen during the day, the full headline total won’t tell you how much you can use. There are perfectly good reasons to be up early on a South African holiday; making the data bundle worthwhile needn’t be one of them.
When choosing a South Africa SIM, separate three things: the data available when you’ll use your phone, the ordinary calling service you need, and the steps required to get the line working. A local eSIM can still involve registration or a store visit, while a free eSIM profile still needs a suitable data package.
We sell the SIM Shop data plans included here. Local offers and buying routes were checked on 21 October 2026; our plan prices and terms were checked on 25 October 2026. The older MTN traveller example is dated separately and is used to explain the allowance split, not as a current airport quote.
Vodacom’s tourist bundles include more than data
Vodacom’s published Travel SIM terms describe these once-off bundles for visitors entering South Africa:
| Published bundle price | Data | Any-network, anytime minutes | Airtime credit | SMS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R299 | 3GB | 30 minutes | R50 | 30 |
| R449 | 5GB | 50 minutes | R100 | 50 |
| R699 | 10GB | 100 minutes | R150 | 100 |
The allocation lasts 30 days and doesn’t automatically recur. The terms name Vodacom airport stores and participating retailers. They also include International Calling Plus as a service, but ordinary international calls are charged per minute; the included service isn’t unlimited free calls home to Australia. These bundles don’t cover data roaming outside South Africa. Vodacom Travel SIM terms.
For a hypothetical 24-day trip needing 4GB and 40 ordinary domestic minutes, the R449 bundle covers both, leaving 1GB and ten minutes before other use. The R299 option misses both requirements. Its separate airtime and SMS allocations don’t turn into additional gigabytes, so compare each item with the job you’ll actually give it.
Vodacom’s table prices the tourist bundle but doesn’t price issuing a new local eSIM. An advertised SIM-swap price would cover a different transaction, so adding it to this table wouldn’t produce a verified total either. Ask for the complete new-line and eSIM price if you want that format. The tourist bundle price alone won’t settle it.
What to bring for a local Vodacom line
Vodacom’s listing with Cape Town Tourism specifies your passport and an accommodation booking confirmation or proof of accommodation for registering a new tourist starter pack. Save the accommodation document before travelling so the registration doesn’t depend on finding a booking email after landing. Vodacom tourist registration information.
If you want a local Vodacom eSIM, specifically request that format at a participating store. Prepaid customers receive a purchase slip and a separate QR-code till slip; complete RICA, the local SIM identity-registration process, before scanning the QR for a new activation. Vodacom’s instructions require activation within South Africa, and its detailed terms warn that some foreign-sourced devices may have regional restrictions. A broad claim that eSIM works on every compatible phone doesn’t remove that qualification. Vodacom eSIM terms, activation location.
Buy and complete registration and activation together for the tourist bundle. Its terms count validity from the activation day and give an end-of-day expiry, so don’t bank on a late-evening activation producing another complete day a month later. Keep the actual expiry shown for your issued bundle with the receipt.
MTN: a new prepaid eSIM is different from converting an old SIM
MTN’s documented route offers a free new prepaid eSIM online. Its page separates that from changing an existing prepaid physical SIM into an eSIM, which requires an MTN store. An Australian visitor buying a new number should follow the new-line route, rather than start an existing-customer conversion they can’t complete.
The public Get connected page names an eSIM-capable device, a valid South African ID or passport for RICA, a working email address for the QR and a Wi-Fi connection. Its sequence is to enter details, choose a plan and RICA the new number. We inspected that public entry page without entering identity details or accepting an agreement, so this establishes the documented route rather than a completed Australian-passport approval.
MTN says every new number must complete RICA before activation and sends activation details by email. The profile being free doesn’t supply a priced data allowance, ordinary minutes or a completed registration. Choose a data package as part of that order; don’t treat a free-profile headline as the entire mobile service. Its separate outward-travel eSIM is also a different product from a local South African prepaid line. MTN eSIM routes and FAQs.
How to read an allowance split between day and night
MTN’s dated traveller terms provide a useful example of why the columns matter. The document dates its offer from 25 February 2020 and shows one R699 row with 20GB of Data plus 20GB of Night Express, both for 30 days. Night Express is usable only from 00:00 to 04:59. We aren’t using those old prices as a verified current airport offer. Dated MTN traveller terms.
That row isn’t 40GB available whenever you like, and it isn’t merely 20GB of night data either. For an example budget of 30GB during the day and 5GB in the night window, the stated allocation is 10GB short during the day despite having 40GB in total. For 15GB daytime and 5GB overnight, both parts fit. The same method works on a current offer: keep time-restricted data in its own column and give it a job, rather than adding it to the number you plan to use while out exploring.
A total data allowance for daytime app use
Our current South Africa data plans include 3GB for 30 days at A$13.95, 5GB for 30 days at A$17.95, 10GB for 30 days at A$27.95 and 20GB for 30 days at A$47.95. These are total allowances without a night-only portion. The selected 3GB, 5GB and 10GB options list Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom; the 20GB option lists Vodacom. Their plan details list 3G/4G capability, with validity starting at first supported-network connection and 180 days from purchase to start.
For an eighteen-day visit expecting 6GB on the phone, our 10GB option fits at A$27.95. It covers that requirement with 4GB spare, while the 5GB option is short by 1GB. You get a defined data purchase in Australian dollars without buying domestic minutes you don’t need. The local R449 bundle remains relevant to the earlier traveller needing forty ordinary domestic minutes. Compare the final amounts in the same currency if cost is also a deciding factor.
Our data-only plan won’t provide a South African phone number, ordinary voice minutes or an SMS allowance. Hotspot availability also depends on your device and network, so the recommendation here is for on-phone use, rather than an assured laptop connection. The listed host network isn’t evidence of reception at a particular safari camp, mountain road or room.
Our travel phone setup guide covers the device steps for a SIM Shop order after arrival. For a local line, have the registration documents ready and complete activation before relying on the number. Whichever service you choose, match the usable allowance to the hours and days you’ll need it.
