Sending luggage ahead in Switzerland: give your suitcase its own itinerary

Standard SBB station-to-station forwarding is for collection two days after drop-off, within participating counters’ hours. Keep essentials with you for the nights apart. The separate station-to-Zurich-Airport product is collected on flight day at the airport SBB desk; you then check the bag in with the airline.

Give the suitcase a workable collection day

Sending the big suitcase ahead can make a day of Swiss trains and sightseeing much more pleasant. But the suitcase gets its own itinerary, and you need enough time apart to make that work. A quieter journey for the bag is helpful only if you can collect it before leaving.

Use SBB’s standard station-to-station service when you can manage two nights without the large bag. For a flight from Zurich, use the specific airport product if its collection window fits, and allow time to check the bag in with the airline yourself. Neither choice means a suitcase will automatically appear at your hotel or on your aircraft.

First decide what you can leave behind

SBB’s station-to-station service costs CHF 12 per ordinary luggage item, one way, with collection two days after drop-off. Two suitcases therefore cost CHF 24. A valid ticket covering the transport route or an eligible annual travelcard is required; this is a travel service, not a cheap way to send purchases across Switzerland.

A normal bag must weigh no more than 23 kg. Pack and label each item properly, including your name, address and phone number, rather than tying separate bags into one optimistic bundle.

The best use is to send clothing and other permitted belongings you will not need during the intervening days. Keep your passport, phone, laptop and camera with you: SBB’s luggage FAQ lists identity documents and these electronics among items excluded from transport. Medication, chargers and enough clothes for the nights apart belong in your smaller bag too. Travelling light loses some of its charm when your toothbrush has gone on ahead without you.

Write the two-night gap into the holiday

Rhaetian Railway also describes the two-day station service. The following calendar model assumes an accepted Monday drop-off with Wednesday collection; it is not a confirmed booking between named stations.

DayYour planYour suitcase
MondayHand over the large bag, then travel with your smaller bag; first night away from itAccepted for forwarding
TuesdayContinue sightseeing or make an intermediate overnight stop; second night away from itNot yet due for collection
WednesdayReach the collection station during the agreed collection windowDue for collection under the booked service

A Tuesday departure from Switzerland fails this model: the bag is not due until Wednesday. Carry it yourself instead of trying to squeeze a two-day service into a one-night itinerary.

SBB’s FAQ directs travellers to its luggage timeframe calculator for the actual route and to the individual station’s luggage hours. Use those two results together: the delivery date tells you when the bag can arrive, while the counter’s hours tell you when you can retrieve it. Your train’s arrival time cannot tell you when the bag or its collection counter will be ready.

The station can be open while the luggage desk is closed

The current RhB deadline table gives Chur a latest luggage drop-off of 18:00 Monday to Friday, but 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday. A 17:30 handover is before the weekday cutoff and half an hour after the weekend cutoff. If you are leaving Chur at the weekend, hand it over earlier rather than relying on a weekday habit. The same table marks flight-luggage service unavailable at Bergün/Bravuogn, despite ordinary luggage forwarding being listed there. Product and station both matter.

At Lucerne, the luggage-counter listing gives regular hours of 08:00–19:00, Monday to Sunday, on the first-floor gallery.

If a bag is already available there and your train arrives at 19:10 on a regular-hours day, you have missed the desk by ten minutes. Do not make that evening’s hotel essentials depend on collecting it. Arrive earlier or plan to collect during the next opening period.

Holiday hours can differ: the same listing gives 07:00–18:30 on 24 and 25 December 2026. Those are published counter hours, not a promise that any bag handed over just before closing qualifies for a particular delivery date.

Standard station forwarding includes storage on the arrival day and the following four days, then CHF 5 for each additional day. For a Wednesday arrival, that included period runs through Sunday; Monday is the first extra day. This can make a later reunion with the suitcase practical, provided your collection still fits the staffed hours.

Zurich Airport delivery still leaves you an airline job

SBB’s station-to-Zurich-Airport product is different: hand over the bag at a participating Swiss station the day before the flight, then collect it at the airport’s SBB luggage counter on departure day, between 06:30 and 21:00. The published ordinary price is CHF 24 per item.

You still take the luggage from the airport collection desk to the airline yourself, so a hypothetical 06:15 bag-drop deadline rules this service out: collection opens 15 minutes too late. For that flight, carry the bag to the airport with you. A later departure still needs enough time between collection and the airline’s deadline, since reaching the luggage desk is not the same as checking the bag in.

For passengers from abroad, SBB specifies booking this offer through a tour operator or Swiss Travel System point of sale. Do not assume the ordinary station-forwarding online purchase is the same product. The reverse service from a foreign airport also has separate booking and customs conditions, so the outward procedure is not a universal inbound promise.

Keep the useful details with the person travelling

Save the luggage receipt, order number, collection address and agreed time on your phone, with an offline copy. Keep them outside the forwarded suitcase. Put the collection task into the itinerary before booking a tightly timed onward train, rather than treating it as something to fit around lunch.

Use mobile maps to find the collection desk and travel updates to adjust your arrival, with the saved receipt ready if reception drops out. Our Switzerland phone setup guide covers preparing the phone for that part of the trip. Data can help you find the desk, but it cannot keep the desk open.

Service details checked on 21 October 2026. The worked calendars illustrate the published rules; they are not observed bookings or delivery guarantees.
