Identify the unfinished step on the THSR order
Buying a Taiwan High Speed Rail tourist pass is the beginning of the booking process, rather than the moment you can head straight for the platform. The order code needs to become designated travel dates, any required seat reservations and, finally, a physical pass collected at a THSR counter.
The tourist One-Way Ticket has a similar-looking journey from payment to collection, but one important difference: its reservation must be made online. The counter that can help redeem a rail pass cannot make that initial One-Way Ticket reservation for you.
Check which product is on the order while you still have time to finish its online steps before leaving for the station. A confirmation email is reassuring, but it is not yet something you can wave at every gate and hope for the best.
Choose days before choosing the pass
THSR’s tourist products are for qualifying short-term foreign visitors. Its official pass portal excludes visitors who entered using a Republic of China passport or a valid alien resident certificate. Check your actual entry status before paying, including when you hold more than one passport.
The two passes use different calendars. The 3-Day Pass covers consecutive days, while the Flexible 2-Day Pass allows two travel days within a seven-day period. They both cover standard-class reserved or non-reserved travel, with reservations required when you want a reserved seat; neither includes business class.
Here is what that means for a hypothetical November trip:
| Intended THSR travel | Calendar fit | What that tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 2, 3 and 4 November | Three consecutive days | A 3-Day Pass matches the pattern. Compare its price with the individual journeys you actually intend to make. |
| 2 and 8 November | Two days within the seven days from 2 to 8 November inclusive | The Flexible 2-Day Pass matches. A 3-Day Pass starting on 2 November would finish on 4 November. |
| One journey on 2 November | One selected journey | Compare a One-Way Ticket before paying for unused pass days. |
| 2 and 9 November | Eight calendar days from first to last | These dates do not fit one Flexible 2-Day Pass starting on 2 November. |
The dates above demonstrate the products’ rules, not available departures or a suggested sightseeing itinerary. Count days in Taiwan time, and resist compressing a holiday solely to make a pass look busier. The train is meant to help you see Taiwan, rather than become an expensive attendance register.
Follow the correct path from payment to boarding
The table below follows the official tourist portal’s products. It does not describe ordinary tickets bought through T Express or the conventional Taiwan Railways TR-PASS.
| Stage | 3-Day Pass | Flexible 2-Day Pass | Tourist One-Way Ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| After payment | You have an order number and redemption code. | You have an order number and redemption code. | You have an order number and redemption code. |
| Set the travel | Designate the first date and reserve any required seats online or at a THSR counter. | Designate the two eligible travel dates and reserve any required seats online or at a THSR counter. | Use the portal’s Manage function to select the date and reserve the journey. Initial reservation is online only. |
| Collect before boarding | Collect the physical pass at a THSR ticketing counter. | Collect the physical pass at a THSR ticketing counter. | Collect the physical ticket at a THSR ticketing counter after the online reservation. |
| Enter and leave the station | Present the pass and passport at the staffed gate. | Present the pass and passport at the staffed gate. | Use the issued ticket at the electronic gate; keep identity and entry documents available for inspection. |
For pass collection, THSR asks for the redemption code, original passport and short-term entry document. For the reserved One-Way Ticket, bring the reservation number, original passport and valid short-term entry document. These collection instructions are why it is worth saving the appropriate reference before leaving your accommodation.
After collection, keep the physical document with your passport somewhere accessible. Taking a photo can help you retain information, but this process still calls for the issued pass or ticket.
Work out what you still need to do
Suppose you have paid for a 3-Day Pass and received a code, but have not yet chosen the dates. You have completed the purchase stage; you have not reserved three days of trains. Open the portal’s Manage section or use the permitted counter process to finish the travel arrangements, then collect the pass.
If you have already designated the dates and booked seats online, the remaining task is collection. Do not treat the reservation confirmation as a reason to skip the counter. A seat reservation and the physical document perform different jobs.
For a tourist One-Way Ticket, arriving at the counter with only an unused redemption code leaves an additional problem: the reservation is still unfinished, and THSR says the counter cannot make that reservation. Complete it online before relying on counter collection. This is the clearest reason to check which of the three products appears on your order rather than loosely calling everything “the Taiwan rail pass”.
Once the physical pass or ticket has been collected, the portal says online processing is no longer available. Take subsequent assistance to a THSR counter rather than assuming a missing online control means the booking has vanished.
Leave the purchase and reservation clocks some room
The order code has a redemption period, but that is separate from the number of travel days bought. THSR states that the code is valid for 90 days from payment; those are not 90 days of train travel.
Travel through these tourist products must also be on a date after payment. Buying one in the morning is therefore not a route to using it that afternoon. Travel dates can be designated within 29 days starting at 00:00 on the redemption date. On Fridays and Saturdays, this extends through the Sunday four weeks after redemption. Reservations must be completed at least one hour before the train departs; THSR can announce special booking-period changes. For a hypothetical 14:00 departure, finish the reservation by 13:00, then collect the physical document before boarding. These clocks use Taiwan time.
Even an otherwise valid pass does not guarantee a seat on the train you prefer. For a journey that anchors another booking, complete the seat reservation when available and give collection its own time at the station. Non-reserved standard-class access on the passes is not a guaranteed seat, and it is not available as a substitute use of this tourist One-Way Ticket.
Keep the useful details available beyond the hotel Wi-Fi
Before leaving, save the order or reservation reference, collection requirements, departure station and any confirmed train details. Put them in one place you can open offline, rather than searching the entire holiday’s emails at the counter.
For managing a booking away from hotel Wi-Fi, our Taiwan connectivity guide covers data and local-service choices for the whole visit.
Before heading for the train, check which stage you have reached: an unused code, a completed reservation, or the physical document. That tells you what to do next.
