Tarifa or Algeciras to Tangier: choose the right port on both sides

Start with Tarifa–Tangier Ville for Tangier’s city and medina. Algeciras–Tanger Med arrives at a different port with a further transfer. An eligible Spanish-side shuttle changes how you reach the ferry, not its Moroccan arrival port.

Match the four ferry ports to the stay and pickup

“Ferry to Tangier” sounds like a complete instruction until your boat and your hotel transfer are expecting you in different places. Tangier Ville and Tanger Med both belong in a search for Morocco, but they are not interchangeable terminals.

For a visit centred on Tangier’s medina and city, start with Tarifa–Tangier Ville. Algeciras–Tanger Med is a different crossing with a separate onward journey into Tangier. Being in Algeciras does not mean you must use Tanger Med, because eligible Baleària passengers can add a Spanish-side shuttle to a Tarifa–Ville booking. That bus changes how you reach the ferry, not where the ferry sails.

Match the port pair to your hotel and onward transport before comparing headline crossing times. It is considerably more pleasant than discovering that your bargain ticket has bought you an unexpected tour of port infrastructure.

The four names that belong on the itinerary

The operator and port guidance below was checked on 21 October 2026.

Baleària sells Tarifa–Tangier Ville and Algeciras–Tangier Med as separate routes. “Tanger” and “Tangier” are spelling variations you will encounter; Ville and Med are the distinction that matters.

PortCountryWhat it means for this journey
TarifaSpainFerry departure for Tangier Ville; also the arrival point for the reverse journey
AlgecirasSpainFerry departure for Tanger Med, or a shuttle starting point for an eligible Tarifa booking
Tangier Ville / Tanger VilleMoroccoThe city port, convenient for a central Tangier visit
Tanger Med / Tangier MedMoroccoA separate port complex outside central Tangier; include the onward land journey

The operator describes Ville as a short walk from the medina. That makes it the natural first choice for a foot-passenger city stay. It does not mean every hotel is beside the terminal, so use the accommodation’s actual address when deciding whether to walk or book a ride.

Tanger Med can still fit a wider road itinerary, or a departure that works better for your dates. The important comparison is the whole trip, including your onward destination, rather than treating both Moroccan arrivals as the same place. Nor is Ville exclusively for foot passengers: Baleària also sells vehicle travel on the Tarifa route.

Staying in Algeciras does not put you on an Algeciras ferry

Suppose you are staying in Algeciras and want to spend two nights in central Tangier, without a car. You choose a Baleària Tarifa–Tangier Ville ticket and add its shuttle. Your journey is:

Algeciras coach area → shuttle to Tarifa → ferry to Tangier Ville → your Tangier accommodation.

The first stop is a bus pickup, not the ferry boarding point. Give a Moroccan pickup driver “Tangier Ville” as the arrival port.

The shuttle rules require a valid Baleària Tarifa–Ville ticket for the relevant date, the shuttle added to that booking, and the ticket shown to the driver. Add it when booking or later through Baleària’s booking channels.

In Algeciras, the pickup is the Coach Parking area opposite the maritime station. In Tarifa, it is the Coach Zone opposite the maritime station. A ticket for another ferry company, or for Algeciras–Tanger Med, does not meet this shuttle’s stated eligibility.

You can therefore stay in Algeciras and still arrive at the city port, provided that exact ferry-and-shuttle arrangement is on the booking.

Keep the bus clock separate from the boarding clock

Baleària’s shuttle page publishes indicative pairings, including 07:30 from Algeciras for a 09:00 Tarifa sailing. That is 90 minutes between the bus departure and the ship departure, not 90 minutes to spend in Tarifa. The timetable expressly allows changes, so use the shuttle attached to your actual booking rather than treating the public table as a confirmed departure for every date.

For an independently arranged arrival at Tarifa, the ordinary route guidance says 60 minutes before departure without a vehicle and 90 minutes with one. A separate busy-period port-access notice specifies two hours at Tarifa and Tangier Ville, with additional access controls.

If organising your own transfer, plan to reach Tarifa two hours before the sailing. For a hypothetical 09:00 departure, that means 07:00. This is a conservative planning choice covering the two published Tarifa arrival windows, not a claim that a two-hour rule applies to every ordinary sailing. The Spanish busy-period notice also says access is not permitted more than two hours before departure, so arriving much earlier does not buy earlier entry to the boarding area.

Do not combine that independent 07:00 arrival plan with the indicative 07:30 shuttle. Choose either the operator’s booked connecting-bus arrangement or your own earlier transport; they are different plans.

Tanger Med has its own arrival and departure system

The Tanger Med Port Authority identifies separate access routes for foot passengers and vehicles. Pedestrians and coach passengers enter through Tanger Med Port Center, with police and customs processing in the maritime station and an internal shuttle to the boarding zone. Vehicles leaving Morocco use Automobile Access.

That internal port shuttle is a third, different movement. It is neither Baleària’s Algeciras–Tarifa bus nor a transfer into central Tangier. If your ticket lands at Tanger Med and your next stop is a city hotel, budget the land transfer as its own leg unless your purchased package explicitly includes it.

For the return journey with a vehicle, Baleària’s current access notice requires a confirmed ticket for the exact travel date at Tanger Med. Do not drive to the access point with an open return or a ticket for another day. Set the actual return sailing before heading to the port; otherwise the notice says travellers can be redirected to an area seven kilometres away to arrange the ticket.

Save a complete journey, not just the ferry QR code

Keep the exact port pair, ferry date, any booked shuttle and accommodation address together offline. If someone is meeting you, send the full arrival-port name. “Tangier ferry” is a perfectly good conversation starter and a poor pickup instruction.

That pickup message is also a reason to think about data on both shores. Our Morocco phone-data guide covers preparation for the Moroccan stay. A Spain-only or Europe offer doesn’t establish Moroccan data. Choose an offer explicitly listing both Spain and Morocco, or separate plans for the two shores.

For a central Tangier stay, choose Ville first and work backwards to Tarifa, including the eligible shuttle if useful. For a Tanger Med itinerary, give the land journey the same attention as the crossing. Once the ports are correct, the rest of the trip becomes a much more sensible comparison.
