Put the latest dated TAZARA notice before the timetable
TAZARA can make the journey between Tanzania and Zambia a substantial part of your holiday, with a sleeper compartment and a route that links Dar es Salaam with New Kapiri-Mposhi. It is a poor fit, however, for an itinerary that needs the train to deliver you to a separately booked flight at a precise hour. The October 2026 disruption shows why the latest service notice must come before the usual timetable.
TAZARA’s dated 20 October 2026 notice reported a cross-border disruption. TAZARA cancelled the 20 October departure from New Kapiri-Mposhi to Dar es Salaam following a railway accident. Its replacement local route was announced only as far as Nakonde, within Zambia. The notice expected the through service to resume from New Kapiri-Mposhi on 27 October. That date has passed; the announcement alone does not confirm the train operated or establish service for your travel date. TAZARA’s 20 October notice
For a Zambia–Tanzania journey, ask the departure booking office whether the named train on your date runs through to your destination, its departure time and where and when you must pay and collect. If it only runs locally, it doesn’t provide the through journey. If riding TAZARA is the reason for the trip, leave the onward portion flexible and build the booking around the actual cross-border service, rather than a timetable screenshot saved months ago.
What the October change means for your route
TAZARA’s 20 October notice gives the following sequence. These are the published plans in Zambia, with times expressed on the Zambian local clock, not a report of actual departures or arrivals.
| Date | Published movement | What you can plan from it |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday 20 October | The 14:00 New Kapiri-Mposhi–Dar es Salaam train was cancelled | This departure cannot provide the planned international journey |
| Wednesday 21 October to Thursday 22 October | Temporary train leaves New Kapiri-Mposhi at 14:00 and is scheduled to reach Nakonde at 12:10 the following day | It ends at Nakonde; it is not a replacement through service to Dar |
| Saturday 24 October | Temporary return leaves Nakonde at 18:13 for New Kapiri-Mposhi | This is the Zambia-only return movement |
| Tuesday 27 October | Cross-border service is expected to resume from New Kapiri-Mposhi at 14:00 | Treat it as a proposed restart, not proof of a secured berth or restored operation |
The temporary 21–24 October dates have now passed. They explain the disruption, rather than provide a local service to book for a later trip.
The temporary outward schedule spans 22 hours and 10 minutes, calculated from the two published local times. That does not give you a Dar arrival time, because Dar is not its destination. Adding a border crossing and another vehicle would create a different journey, with its own tickets and arrangements; none is included in this local train announcement.
The normal pattern has one departure from each end
Before this disruption, the February 2026 service revision established a Tuesday 14:00 departure from New Kapiri-Mposhi and a Friday 15:50 departure from Dar es Salaam. The operator describes two weekly trips in total, meaning one from each end, rather than two chances a week to board in either city.
Use the local clock of the station where you board. Zambia uses Central Africa Time; Tanzania uses East Africa Time, one hour ahead. A 14:00 departure in Zambia is therefore 15:00 on a Tanzanian clock, but you should record the boarding time as 14:00 Zambia time to avoid creating your own conversion puzzle at the station.
The revised train also combines express and ordinary stopping sections. Older guides that offer a simple choice between a separate express train and a separate ordinary train do not describe this revised arrangement. Choose your direction and boarding station first, then the accommodation you want on that service.
For Zambia departures, the station is New Kapiri-Mposhi, not Lusaka. An international flight into Lusaka still leaves you with a separate journey to the railway. That transfer belongs in the holiday plan and budget, even when the train ticket is the part you are most excited about.
Choose a berth before choosing a romantic idea of a berth
TAZARA’s passenger FAQ describes first-class compartments with four berths and second-class compartments with six. Shared sleeping compartments are allocated separately for men and women; a mixed party wanting to stay together needs to book the entire compartment.
For a couple who want a private first-class compartment, that means arranging all four berths, not purchasing two and assuming the remaining beds will stay empty. A family or group can make the same decision according to its size and privacy preference. Price the whole compartment if you want privacy, including the otherwise empty berths, rather than comparing two per-person class prices.
A sleeper berth also does not turn the journey into an all-inclusive rail holiday. Keep the accommodation purchase separate from your food, onward transport and overnight arrangements at either end. A bunk is a very useful piece of furniture, but it has yet to acquire the power to organise the rest of a holiday.
Reserve through the office where you will collect the ticket
TAZARA does not offer online ticket purchase through its published booking process. You can make a reservation enquiry by phone or email, then buy the ticket physically. The FAQ tells travellers to use the office where they intend to purchase, rather than reserving through one office and expecting another to hold the same arrangement.
The official reservations page lists these contacts and weekday office hours of 07:30–17:00 in the relevant country’s local time:
| Purchase location | Published contact |
|---|---|
| Dar es Salaam | Hemed Msangi: +255 713 225292; hmsangi2002@yahoo.com |
| New Kapiri-Mposhi | Lydia Makukula: +260 978 721782 |
| Lusaka, TAZARA House in Kamwala | Agatha Mwale: +260 974 975670; bookings.lusaka@tazarasite.com |
Give the office your direction, boarding station, travel date, passenger count and berth request. If you want the whole first-class compartment, say so explicitly. Keep the returned reservation and collection details with your travel documents; sending an email by itself does not purchase a ticket.
For a ticket still to be bought at the departure station, the FAQ advises arriving an hour or two before departure. Use the two-hour end of that guidance for your own plan. On a normally operating 14:00 departure, that would mean reaching the station by 12:00, with the transfer from your accommodation already allowed for. This example is a preparation window, not confirmation of any particular departure.
Give the railway room in the holiday
TAZARA’s 13 October operational update already warned of possible interruptions during rehabilitation. The subsequent cancellation makes it particularly unwise to use a general journey-duration estimate as the foundation for a non-refundable onward connection.
For a trip with a fixed international departure soon afterwards, choose transport that can be booked against that deadline and leave TAZARA for a visit with more flexibility. For a rail-focused holiday, arrange the onward stay with changeable dates and keep the first night’s accommodation contact available offline. There is no defensible universal number of spare hours that makes a disrupted railway connection guaranteed.
The same practical approach applies to your phone. Save your ticket correspondence, station name and accommodation address before boarding. For email to the booking office and messages about the onward stay, compare mobile data for both Tanzania and Zambia with the countries you will actually visit. A single-country purchase does not include the other by implication or promise reception along the railway. Your saved train plans should remain readable even when your phone has nothing to say.
