Choose which Narrows trip you mean
“The Narrows” can mean turning around partway through a river walk, completing a 16-mile through-hike, or carrying camping equipment into the canyon for one night. Those are three different commitments. Agreeing which version everyone means is the first planning job. “The Narrows” is a little too vague for the group chat once somebody starts booking.
The short answer is that bottom-up hiking from Zion Canyon needs no Narrows permit, while the top-down day hike needs a day-use wilderness permit and the top-down overnight trip needs permission for a designated campsite. A day permit does not include an optional night, and the overnight route allows one night, not two. NPS Narrows permit guide
This guide separates those choices using the park and booking pages reviewed on 21 October 2026. It deals with itinerary and permission, not river-crossing technique or an assessment of anyone’s fitness.
Start with the journey, then open the booking page
For a visitor who wants to experience the river canyon without committing to the full through-route, the bottom-up format gives the relevant flexibility: you travel upstream, turn around and return the same way. You do not need a top-down permit simply to enter the river at the end of Riverside Walk.
The top-down formats start outside the park at Chamberlain’s Ranch and finish at the Temple of Sinawava. Both cover the full 16 miles, about 26 km. Spending a night divides that journey across two days; it does not shorten it or remove its demands. NPS describes the route as very strenuous, with most of it spent in the river rather than on a maintained path.
| The trip you mean | Start and finish | Permission | What you commit to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom-up out-and-back | Temple of Sinawava, returning there | No Narrows permit | An upstream river visit with a turnaround, within the allowed route |
| Top-down in one day | Chamberlain’s Ranch to Temple of Sinawava | Day-use wilderness permit for the trip date | The entire 16-mile route and exit that day |
| Top-down with one night | Same top-down start and finish | Wilderness permit for a designated Narrows campsite | One campsite night, then exit the following day |
The park’s bottom-up description gives Big Spring as the upstream limit, a 9.4-mile return trip from the trailhead if you go that far. Reaching it is not compulsory. The paved Riverside Walk leads to the river entry; after that, this is a river hike, not a dry footpath continuing beside the water. NPS warns that even a short trip can be challenging and risky.
For the full route, use the park’s top-down permit instructions. Do not choose the day format just because its fee looks lower. If the intended trip needs a night in the canyon, it needs the overnight booking from the outset.
The day-hike booking page has an unexpected name
Advance top-down day reservations sit under Zion National Park Canyoneering Advanced Reservations on Recreation.gov. That page handles technical canyons too, but expressly includes the non-technical, 16-mile Narrows through-hike. Select the Narrows entry for this trip, not an unrelated canyon because the names or availability look similar. Official advance reservation page
Advance reservations can be made at least one day before the trip. They are not a same-day online channel. There is also a daily lottery for last-minute day-hike places, but its timing is easy to mix up with Angels Landing’s separate lottery:
For a Tuesday top-down Narrows day hike, enter the lottery on Sunday.
The Narrows day lottery accepts applications two days before the trip, from midnight to 3 pm Mountain time, with results around 4 pm. It is not a Monday application for a Tuesday hike. You can submit one application per individual, selecting up to four canyon preferences. Only include routes the group is actually equipped and prepared to undertake. NPS daily lottery timing
Any places left after that lottery become available in person on a first-come basis the day before. That gives Monday a possible role for the Tuesday example, but not a guaranteed rescue of a missed Sunday application. If the rest of your travel depends on that through-hike, secure the reservation before committing to the arrangements around it.
An overnight reservation buys a specific campsite night
Use the separate Overnight Narrows Permits page for the overnight route. The permit applies to the selected people, date and location. The park makes half of its wilderness campsites available in advance and the remainder through in-person, first-come requests no more than a day before the trip.
The crucial limit is one night per party in the Narrows. A leisurely two-night progression through the canyon is not an available version of this booking. Nor can you take a day permit and decide to camp halfway because the walk is taking longer than expected.
If you booked the day hike but your plan now includes sleeping in the canyon, obtain the appropriate overnight reservation and issued permit before setting out. Without that permission, remove the overnight itinerary from the plan. A camping-equipment hire booking does not supply it.
Allow time for a separate visit to collect the permit
For an ordinary visitor, a reservation confirmation is not the wilderness permit. The named holder must collect the permit at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center Wilderness Desk, on the day before or the day of the trip, with the reservation confirmation and proof of identity. Bring the make, model and registration number of every vehicle associated with the trip. NPS says to allow at least 20 minutes for issuing. Collection requirements
At the 21 October 2026 review, the published hours were 8 am–5 pm for that wilderness desk. The Kolob Canyons wilderness desk was closed until further notice. For an early top-down departure, collecting the day before avoids trying to fit an 8 am office opening in front of the journey to Chamberlain’s Ranch. Those are dated operating hours, not an assurance of identical hours next season.
The person collecting must also be the participating holder. A friend who reaches Zion first cannot collect in the absent organiser’s place. If the holder cannot participate, NPS requires cancellation; another group member may then try to reserve the released space, but it becomes available to everyone. It is not a private transfer.
Zion Express is a real exception to ordinary in-person issuing, but it is not an instant shortcut for a first visit. Membership requires watching three orientation films at the wilderness desk and signing the programme agreement before access is attached to the Recreation.gov account. A traveller without that existing enrolment should use the collection plan above.
Compare the fees without mistaking them for a package
The published day-use charge is US$6 per reservation or lottery application, plus US$10 per person. Overnight permits are US$20 per permit, plus US$7 per person for the one permitted night. The reservation components are non-refundable. Day-use fees, overnight fees
For two people, those permit totals are US$26 for the day route and US$34 for one night. The US$8 difference compares permit charges, not the cost of the whole overnight trip. Equipment, food and the transport you arrange to the starting point are separate, and the overnight itinerary still requires a campsite place.
NPS specifically makes the permit holder responsible for arranging transport to Chamberlain’s Ranch. The free Zion Canyon shuttle serving the Temple of Sinawava is not that trailhead transfer. Keep the start and finish clear when arranging transport; the fact both journeys concern “The Narrows” does not make the destinations interchangeable.
Keep the river conditions separate from the reservation
A permit does not keep the canyon open. High water, flash flooding and other factors can close the route, and a top-down closure should not be treated as an automatic invitation to do the bottom-up route instead. Each proposed outing needs to meet the park’s current access and conditions advice.
Do the reservation and transfer arrangements while you have a connection, then save the permit details and transport confirmations offline. Our USA travel-data comparison covers phone service for the wider holiday. Do not make the canyon plan depend on mobile reception.
Choose the version of the Narrows that matches the trip you intend to make, then organise its permission, collection and transport in that order. The river supplies enough of the challenge without the booking referring to a different day out.
