In this guide 5 sections
Buying, installing and starting the plan are separate events. Waiting to install doesn't extend a purchase deadline, so choose the buying date around the selected offer's actual start window.
The two clocks that can change your purchase date
Our selected Japan 10GB/30-day plan at A$19.95 has sixty days from purchase to first supported-network connection, followed by thirty days of running validity. Its 10GB is one total balance.
If you buy ninety days before arriving, you're thirty days outside that start window. Wait before buying that offer. If you buy thirty days before arriving, save the email and follow the arrival setup route. The ability to buy early isn't a reason to install early.
Other offers have different clocks. Some fixed plans allow 180 days to start. Our selected local KDDI Japan service instead has a supplier-issued start-by date and may be deemed activated at that deadline even if unused. Treat a displayed deadline as a deadline, not as an invitation to hold the profile indefinitely.
Read the selected offer's start window and running validity before paying. If your order has an issued date that does not fit changed flights, send hello@thesimshop.com.au the order number and new arrival date before installing; ask which option is available for that exact order. Don't assume deleting or reinstalling changes the clock.
Before departure, do the preparation that helps
Confirm the exact phone model/region supports eSIM and that the handset is unlocked. Save the setup email where you can find it, along with the first accommodation address, transfer contact, tickets and useful offline maps.
If the QR will be on the same phone, identify the supported same-device method or manual details in the email. A second screen or printed QR is another option when the phone needs to scan it. Keep those details private and assigned to the intended phone.
Sign in to your carrier and bank apps at home, and prepare any supported verification alternative while the Australian number is still available. Installing a travel profile doesn't transfer bank SMS to it.
After landing, take the connection steps in order
- Join the airport Wi-Fi, complete its portal and open a normal webpage. If that fails, wait for a steady trusted connection.
- Open the correct order email and add the eSIM using its supplied method. Our installation guide covers the current device steps.
- Label the line clearly and select it for mobile data. Keep home-line data roaming off and automatic data switching disabled.
- Apply the travel line's roaming/APN instructions from that order. Don't copy another provider's APN or a general internet setting.
- Temporarily turn Wi-Fi off and load a small webpage. Confirm the travel line remains selected. If it fails, reconnect to Wi-Fi and check the settings against the email.
For iPhone, line choices are under Mobile Service/Cellular/Mobile Data. Galaxy uses Connections, SIM manager; Pixel uses Network & internet, SIMs. The dual-SIM guide explains data versus calling defaults.
If setup stops at an error
Keep the profile installed if it appears in SIM settings. Don't repeatedly rescan or delete it as the first fix. Send support the order, exact phone/software, country, error and steps tried. Crop private QR and activation details out of screenshots unless support specifically requests them through its secure route.
A working arrival connection is the goal. If the airport portal won't cooperate, the saved address and transfer details let you get to the next usable connection without turning the queue into a phone-settings project.
